The Ithaka Report 2006 investigated trends in the valuation of library functions by faculty. Faculty placed high values on library functions as purchaser and archive even as the valuation of information gateway declined. This poster demonstrates an effort toward expanding the archive function of a hospital library. We will describe our pilot program to digitize historical documents and photographs.

For my Senior Honors Project I participated in the Climate Change Collaborative, which is a new interdisciplinary research project studying the ways in which coastal communities in Rhode Island can better adapt to the environmental, cultural and economic consequences of climate change. As a member of this collaborative, I worked in a vertically integrated team of faculty (psychology researchers, climate scientists and communications science practitioners and researchers) as well as undergraduate and graduate students, to begin an endeavor through which behavior change will be assessed in regards to climate change. Homelessness is a serious economic, social and public health problem. Approximately 2.3 to 3.5 million people are estimated to be homeless nationwide and with the current recession, these numbers are expected to rise. Due to the lack of permanent living accommodations and limited access to healthcare, homeless people are more likely than domiciled people to suffer from a wide range of chronic health problem, ranging from diabetes to tuberculosis to mental illness. Healthcare problems can be seen as both the cause and the effect of homelessness.

It has been shown that the metabolic rates of deep-living species of particular pelagic groups are significantly lower than those that live closer to the surface in the water column. Various theories as to why have been presented, including the visual interactions hypothesis, which states that because there is a greatly minimized ability to visually interact in the light-limited deep, predators have a reduced need for high metabolic rates because they do not actively go after their prey. During the week of January 7-14, 2010, Molly Calico and Jordan Norris participated in the Impact Belize program through the College of Health and Human Services. This program took place in Gales Point, a rural, underserved community in Belize. Impact students provided medical, dental and public health services to the community in an interdisciplinary service-learning format. As Master of Public Health students, Molly and Jordan directed health education initiatives and served on the Leadership Team for the program. The points discussed in the session are related to United Nations peacekeeping in the twenty-first century and the international police education for the rule of law. It is noted that 100 countries contribute police officers to the United Nations, and that 49 of those countries contribute 25 or fewer officers. There is a gender imbalance, with only 7.75 % of forces being made up of women. In the past, UN policing priorities were: monitoring to verify police performance and impartiality, observing to ascertain police strengths and weaknesses and reporting to document police infractions. Service Project Purpose: I was a mentor to at-risk students at Sliver Sage Elementary, providing educational assistance and companionship for students in the Homework Club. I worked with small group of students on their schoolwork, as well as helping them build intrapersonal skills such as self-confidence, motivation, and self-determination. Learning goals: This service learning project is intended to assist student mentors in gaining a deeper insight into at-risk students. This opportunity comes while working with organizations whose service-delivery models strive to enhance post-secondary outcomes, educational, social, and/or familial services for these at-risk youth.

Because we felt like there was little engineering in this, we decided to provide an arm attachment to hold the device so that Charlie would be able to use the device without having to have help. We needed to design an arm that would attach to the wheel chair in a way that it would be secure and also not be in the way of his wheels, armrest, or the chairs controls. Corpus Christi House offers hospitality and every day necessities to the homeless within the city of Boise. Through my SL experience with CCH I have gained new perspectives on homelessness through generosity, acceptance and trust. I have met some truly amazing individuals who strive to “stay strong.” Understanding and acceptance are key to success at CCH, as they help to lessen the gap between social exclusion and social acceptance. The environment provided by CCH enables the homeless to break down those barriers, create meaningful relationships and trust those around them. CCH is the true meaning of acceptance, compassion and altruism.

Service Project Purpose: We identified dentists in the Central District Health Department region who perform fluoride varnish on underserved children aged 3 and under. The information was formatted into a usable database, separated by zip code. A map, identifying locations of those dentists in District 4, was created. Learning goals: Apply basic concepts of population-focused practice to client situations, and perform targeted community assessments centered on an identified need of an agency working with a population. Implement short-term interventions and make recommendations for short and long-range goals and interventions for the agency/population.

We found that participants were in favor of after-school programs and we also found that they think after-school programs were beneficial. Even though we didn’t specifically ask the participant “what part of development do you think after-school programs benefit a child or adolescent,” we think it is safe to infer that the participants view after-school programs and/or activities as beneficial to development in general. Future research is still needed to evaluate future improvements that can be made in after-school programs.

The purpose of HEP is to help migrant and seasonal farm workers who have worked in an agricultural job for at least 75 hours, and their children, who are 16years or older and have at least an 8th grade skill level in reading and math, to enhance socioeconomic mobility through education by providing an opportunity to take advantage of federally-sponsored GED training and tests.
