The Kentucky Microbiome Dataset, Rachel L. Washburn, Douglas C. Curl
Research Data--KGS
The Kentucky Microbiome Dataset is a continuously updated geolocated dataset which describes the distribution and diversity of microorganisms across the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Each geolocated point represents a location reported in the peer-reviewed literature where microorganisms were sampled from soil, water, geologic substrates, or clinical settings. Environmental studies include only non-host-associated, non-clinical microorganisms sampled from natural environments. Clinical studies are mapped separately to highlight locations where investigations into host-associated or human health-related microbes have occurred.
For each location, associated metadata include study information, taxonomic classifications, sample type, sampling method, latitude and longitude, sampling date, publication reference, and a direct link …

State Policy & Politics Database (Sppd), Jennifer Karas Montez
Center For Aging and Policy Studies
The State Policy & Politics Database (SPPD) is a compilation of annual data on state policies and politics that are particularly relevant for population health. The SPPD includes several categories of policies, including labor and economic policies (e.g., minimum wage levels, right to work laws), social safety net policies (e.g., earned income tax credits, SNAP), behavior-related policies (e.g., tobacco taxes, opioid prescribing), as well as the political ideology of the states’ government and citizens. Most measures are available annually from 1980 to 2023 or 2024.

Department of Family and Consumer Sciences
This study examined the burden and correlates of undernutrition among children aged 6-59 months in the Busoga Sub-Region of Eastern Uganda. This community-based cross-sectional study utilized quantitative data collection methods comprising 439 caregiver-child dyads with children aged 6-59 months. Probability proportionate to size randomized sampling determined eligible households per village. World Health Organization (WHO) growth standards defined child stunting, underweight, and wasting. Logistic regression analyses generated crude and adjusted odds ratios (AORs) for child wasting and underweight correlates. Modified Poisson regression analyses generated unadjusted and adjusted prevalence ratios (APRs) of child stunting correlates. Significance was set at p< 0.05. The mean child age was 27(SD±14) months, with 230 (52.4%) males. Among children, 29.6% were stunted, 8.8% were underweight, and 8.2% were wasted. Children with wasting had a higher likelihood of having experienced diarrhea (AOR=2.8[1.3-5.9], p=0.007), measles (AOR=2.2[1.1-4.6], p=0.045), and no breastfeeding history (AOR=5.7[1.3-26], p=0.024). caregivers aged 26-44 (AOR=0.3[0.1-0.8], p=0.023) were less likely to have underweight children. In contrast, child underweight was significantly associated with maternal parity (AOR=5.2[1.3-21], p=0.020), no breastfeeding history (AOR=9.0[1.7-48], p=0.01), child not fully vaccinated (AOR=7.0[2.2-22], p=0.001), and recent diarrhea experience (AOR=2.4[1.2-5.4], p=0.042). Children were more likely to experience stunting if they were not fully vaccinated (APR=1.9 [1.2-3.0], p=0.009), and resided in households with 4-5 people (APR=1.8[1.1-3.2], p=0.029) or more than six household members (APR=2.0[1.2-3.6], p=0.014). Integrated nutrition-sensitive interventions, including the promotion of increased vaccination coverage, family planning, and optimal infant and young child feeding practices, could improve child growth in the region and similar locales.

The Power Of Preference: How Assignment Choice Shapes Learning In Statistics, Joshua Guillemette, Charlotte A. Jones-Roberts
The Power Of Preference: How Assignment Choice Shapes Learning In Statistics, Joshua Guillemette, Charlotte A. Jones-Roberts
Research Data and Datasets
Assignment choice is an increasingly explored instructional strategy in undergraduate education, particularly in courses where students often struggle to find personal relevance or maintain motivation. In statistics education, where conceptual abstraction and perceived difficulty are common barriers, offering structured choices in group formation and dataset selection may enhance engagement and learning outcomes. This study investigates the effects of assignment choice on student self-efficacy, performance, and group behavior within a large introductory statistics course. Using a one-way ANOVA design, the study compared academic outcomes across three conditions: randomly assigned groups, self-selected groups, and independent work. Students completed six scaffolded projects over …

Hypercoagulable And Autoimmune Factors In Patients With Moyamoya Syndrome, Justin F. Fraser, Min Jian Hou Ma, Christopher Mclouth, Laura Whitnel, Jessica Lasslo, David Dornbos Iii, Jill Roberts
Neuroscience Research Data
Moyamoya is a progressive cerebrovascular condition leading to stenosis of the internal carotid arteries (ICA) and formation of abnormal vasculature at the base of the brain. Patients ultimately suffer from ischemic and/or hemorrhagic stroke. In Kentucky, patients often present with comorbidities, which classifies them as having moyamoya syndrome (MMS). In this prospective observational study, we measured coagulable- and autoimmune-related factors in MMS subjects to identify possible therapeutic targets and help inform clinical care. Venous blood samples were collected from adult subjects diagnosed with MMS and analyzed by the UK Healthcare Clinical Laboratory. Blood samples, demographics, and medical records were obtained …

Using Machine Learning, The Cloud, Big Data, Citizen-Science, And 200+ Environmental Predictors Towards Proposing Modern Add-Ons To Improve Conservation Management Plans For Squirrel Species In Alaska And Its Indigenous Lands(Vers2), Moriz Steiner, Falk Huettmann
Faculty
Context. Squirrel species in Alaska generally lack thorough conservation management plans, while all species are actively hunted with no bag limits, closed seasons, or any other restrictions, and the current ‘management’ is based on ambiguous hand-drawn distribution maps. This indicates a laissez-faire approach to Alaskan squirrel conservation management. Aims. Here, we attempt to improve this current situation by assessing the effectiveness of ensemble machine-learning prediction models as proposed add-ons to the traditional components of conservation management plans toward a more state-of-the-art approach to species conservation. Methods. We combined the Machine Learning algorithms TreeNet, CART, Random Forest, and Maxent with over …

Salmon As An Ecological Pathway Of Contaminants Into Alaskan Food Webs, Miranda Brohman, Gretchen Roffler, Dimitri G. Giarikos, David Kerstetter, Amy C. Hirons
SECLER Data
Salmon are important fish taxa for humans and animals in hemiboreal and subarctic ecosystems. Trace elements and their marine food web bioaccumulation raises biomagnification and potential human health risk concerns. Sixteen trace element concentrations and their health risk assessments were determined in seven different tissues of two Southeast Alaska salmon species (chum, Oncorhynchus keta and pink, Oncorhynchus gorbuscha). Chum tissues had overall higher trace element concentrations compared to pink, which may be attributed to a difference of diets, generally longer-lived and spending more time in the open ocean. All kidney and liver samples exceeded the tolerable daily intake for …

This dataset was created as part of a larger study to recover the Belen colonial Catholic mission Church and the Plaza Vieja emergence history. By using extractions in Oswald Gilbert Baca’s Burial Records from the Roman Catholic Parish of Nuestra Señora de Belen, Belen, New Mexico, 1793 – 1900 as an initial source and comparing with the original register pages (available online at familysearch.org), I have begun to verify, clarify, correct and expand Baca’s extractions.
For ease in sorting and counting, I created a master spreadsheet with all the pertinent information pulled from Oswald Baca’s extractions and from images of …
