Notice, 4 March 1863, to Charles Wilson, Cuyahoga County, Ohio from Governor David Tod awarding him a certificate of service in the “Squirrel Hunters,” volunteers who responded to his call to defend Cincinnati and southern Ohio against threatened invasion by Confederate forces in September 1862. Includes an honorable discharge (mutilated) issued to Wilson.

Karl Kalmar (September 17, 1871 (Vienna, Austria) – December 26, 1942 (Theresienstadt)) and Margarethe Kalmar (Pollak) (December 5, 1881 (Vienna, Austria) – After May 16, 1944 (KZ Auschwitz)). They had two sons Paul Kalmar (May 31, 1908 (Vienna, Austria) – August 3, 1977 (Scotland, UK)) and George Otto Kalmar (November 16, 1913 (Vienna, Austria) – November 12, 1994 (Copake, NY)).

George Kalmar studied painting at the Kunstgewerbschule (now University of Applied Arts) in Vienna. He married Vera Rosa Kalmar (Raschkes) (August 24, 1914 (Vienna, Austria) – August 24, 1988 (Acton, Middlesex County, Massachusetts)), a fellow artist, on July 10, 1938. …

Dorr Scholarship

Following two failed armed attempts in May and June 1842 by Thomas Wilson Dorr, the People’s governor, to establish the People’s government in Rhode Island, the opposing Charter government’s legislature enacted Martial Law throughout the state. During a period lasting several weeks forces allegiant to the Charter government and its governor, Samuel Ward King, commenced an all-out effort to arrest more than 260 pro-Dorr citizens. Some of Dorr’s followers fled the state to avoid arrest but those arrested appeared before a commission formed to interrogate the prisoners. Original Intent: Brown Vs. Board Of Education, White Backlash, & The Enduring Power Of De Facto Segregation, Aaron Brand

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the factors and outcomes surrounding Brown v. Board of Education of 1954. The events that predated it and the resistance that followed determined the chain of consequences from this perceived victory over racial bias. The calculated and persistent backlash against integration obscured Brown’s intent of educational opportunity.

The twenty-year period of British sovereignty of the Floridas came to an end September 3, 1783, when the treaty concluding the American Revolution was signed at Versailles, France. The Treaty of Paris, as it was known, gave the Spanish crown control of a large portion of North America. Spain retained sovereignty over the Louisiana Territory, and the Spanish flag once more flew over the Floridas as it had from 1565 to 1763. In the short though not uneventful life of the British colony of West Florida, major figures came and went with disruptive frequency. Three royal governors and two lieutenant governors headed the resident administration of the colony in eighteen years, but all of them enjoyed the administrative stability provided in London by the royal agent for West Florida, John Ellis.
