The Fight For Freedmen's Minds In Arkansas, Ellis Eugene Thompson
The Fight For Freedmen's Minds In Arkansas, Ellis Eugene Thompson
Theses and Dissertations
Arkansas was one of the last states to develop a public primary and secondary school system for African American students. While education was for the most part privatized, an important philosophy for educating African Americans was developed early by the Free African Society and AME Church that influenced Arkansas public and private Freedman education. This thesis looks into that and competing philosophies and examines how obstacles were presented to impede African American education and thereby obstruct their entry socially, economically and politically into American society. Moreover, how elites knowingly and repeatedly attempted to install a defective educational system that would …

The Murder Of George Floyd: A Case Study Examining How The Policing Of Black Men And Grassroots Activism Influence The Will Of Black Women To Lead, Ella Gates-Mahmoud
Doctorate in Education
This study's objective investigates the viewpoints held by Black women in two urban areas of Minnesota about the social upheaval that followed the murder of George Floyd in 2020 for using a counterfeit $20 bill. In the last decade, police killings of innocent Black people in the United States have received more attention, and Floyd's death is only one example of this phenomenon. In the U.S., the likelihood of a police officer taking the life of a Black man is higher than that of a White man. Between 2013-2019 there have been 1,641 fatal shootings of defenseless Black men by …
Intersections Of Violence Against Immigrant Women On The United States-Mexico Border, Holland Morgan
Intersections Of Violence Against Immigrant Women On The United States-Mexico Border, Holland Morgan
Ramifications
There have been growing tensions along the United States-Mexico border over the last twenty years and the very unique position of Mexican immigrant women is largely ignored. With the increased militarization of the border to protect American land from people considered ‘illegal’, this has left immigrant women vulnerable to gendered violence from border officials; as well as state systems that silence their voices or persecute them for their undocumented status. This paper uses the disciplines of history, sociology, and women’s and gender studies to make connections between the state portrayal of immigrant women, violence in border cities, and community efforts …

"Either On Account Of Sex Or Color": Policing The Boundaries Of The Medical Profession During Reconstruction, Adam Lloyd-Jones
"Either On Account Of Sex Or Color": Policing The Boundaries Of The Medical Profession During Reconstruction, Adam Lloyd-Jones
Swarthmore Undergraduate History Journal
In 1868, the American Medical Association (AMA) was asked to permit consultation with female physicians and admit them as delegates. In 1870, a delegation of Black doctors sought entrance to an Annual AMA meeting. The AMA refused entrance to both female and Black physicians. This paper argues that these meetings, and the question of inclusion for Black and female practitioners, arose out of the political climate that Reconstruction created. Expanding from previous scholarship, this paper further analyzes the role of Chicago doctor Nathan Smith Davis in the perpetuation of a white medical profession.
The Kissinger Of Death: Henry Kissinger And The Letelier-Moffitt Assassination, Anna Considine
The Kissinger Of Death: Henry Kissinger And The Letelier-Moffitt Assassination, Anna Considine
Swarthmore Undergraduate History Journal
On September 21st, 1976, Orlando Letelier was assassinated in the streets of Washington, DC. The murky story of the assassination has slowly emerged in the decades since, revealing the key roles of Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet and Operation Condor. However, with the level of intelligence available to the United States about the Chilean dictatorship, how was the assassination able to take place at all? Was the United States complicit? This paper illuminates the role of the US Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger, in the Letelier-Moffitt assassination by investigating declassified documents from US National Security Archive from the months leading up …
Children And The Cold War: Race & Hypocrisy Amid Fear Of Nuclear War, Richard D. Mctaggart Jr.
Children And The Cold War: Race & Hypocrisy Amid Fear Of Nuclear War, Richard D. Mctaggart Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
During the Cold War, American propaganda centered the wellbeing of the child in its messaging warning of atomic attack at the hands of the Soviet Union. However, despite American claims that all children were valued by the United States, this was proven untrue by its unequal treatment of Black children.
Opportunity Lost: Iran And America In The Early Cold War, Clyde Brant
Opportunity Lost: Iran And America In The Early Cold War, Clyde Brant
History Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity
Late in 1943, President Franklin Roosevelt adopted a policy toward Iran that he had hopes would serve as a model for American international relations in other countries. Roosevelt’s policy centered on support for local sovereignty in the face of Soviet and British imperialistic actions in the country. It lasted until American policy makers in the Eisenhower Administration decided to support a coup against Prime Minister Mossadegh in 1953. This thesis argues that the pre–Cold War policy of supporting Iranian sovereignty set forth by Roosevelt worked until American policymakers chose to abandon it. The Truman Administration used the policy successfully during …

Plot To Kill The President: A Novel, Arthur Scott, Brian Heath
Plot To Kill The President: A Novel, Arthur Scott, Brian Heath
Faculty Authored Books and Book Contributions
I was always skeptical of The Warren Report as were countless other Americans over the decades.
I was reenergized to look more closely at November 22,1963, by a chance encounter with Brian heath, a JFK aficionado, who had made some startling discoveries about the assassination. He had studied meticulously the Nix film and concluded that the fatal shot came from within the presidential limousine from the driver, William Greer. Similarly, that many of JFK’s cabinet members consisted of former OSS spooks, who dominated the CIA, and were major spokesman for the national security state and America’s global dominance.
They saw …

Each chapter of Dreamers before the Mast recounts the hard work and hair-raising adventures experienced by Regina’s owners, captains, crew members, scientists, and students, often in their own words through extensive interviews and excerpts from diaries and journals, letters, and the ship’s logs. All material is fully documented, and the book includes a complete index and …

Militants In The Model City: Richard Lee, The Hill Parents Association, And The Limits Of Citizen Participation In New Haven's Urban Renewal Anti-Poverty Programs, Lydia Broderick
Kaplan Senior Essay Prize for Use of Library Special Collections
When Richard Lee was elected Mayor of New Haven in 1953, the city desperately needed change. It had suffered from decades of decline as, in political scientist Douglas Rae’s assessment, “what had been a convergence of accidents favoring urbanism had turned into a convergence of accidents working against it”: steam-driven manufacturing and freight rail became obsolete, the development of cars drove suburbanization, restrictions on immigration stopped the flow of cheap labor, and local manufacturers were bought out by big corporations or closed down altogether. At the same time, Black Southerners migrated to northern cities like New Haven in large numbers …

Perception Vs. Reality: The Influence Of Civic Experiences In High School On Adult Civic Engagement, Kaya Bottmeyer
Perception Vs. Reality: The Influence Of Civic Experiences In High School On Adult Civic Engagement, Kaya Bottmeyer
Political Science & International Studies | Senior Theses
Research on political socialization has shown that individuals’ families and education play a significant role in their later political actions and attitudes, but more needs to be understood on how large the role of education is and, specifically, what impact secondary education has on people’s political socialization. Literature suggests that educational standards that require more civics or social science courses are more effective in creating civically engaged individuals, and curriculums that employ service learning and experiential learning techniques are even more effective at increasing civic engagement, but to what extent does a person's perception of their educational experience factor into …
Black October: The Migration Of Black Americans To The Soviet Union In The Interwar Period, Alice Volfson
Black October: The Migration Of Black Americans To The Soviet Union In The Interwar Period, Alice Volfson
Slavic Studies Honors Papers
Through an in-depth look at first-person accounts, primary documents, and archival research, this project broadens the scope of information available about the interwar migration of Black Americans to the Soviet Union for agricultural, industrial, and artistic initiatives which helped advance the Socialist Project. These men and women had different motivations for their emigration stemming from racial solidarity with various Soviet peoples, economic reasonings, and safety from American racism. This paper hopes to bring to life the stories of those whose legacies have been lost to history by uncovering their lives under communism, their achievements and recognitions, and that of their …

Pioneers, Parricides, And The Spectre Of Violence In Settler-Colonial Homes And Histories, Katrina Jagodinsky
Pioneers, Parricides, And The Spectre Of Violence In Settler-Colonial Homes And Histories, Katrina Jagodinsky
Department of History: Faculty Publications
Americans are grappling with everyday political and personal violence on a variety of fronts. Escalating frustrations with alternating police inaction and violence, failed explanations of gender- and racially motivated mass-shootings, and the heartbreaking centrality of children in this violence—as both victims and perpetrators—leave many onlookers desperate to understand how these acts have come to be so distinctly American. A cadre of scholars are focused on this problem: criminologists, lawyers, political scientists, psychologists, sociologists, and, applying their own unique set of tools and methodologies, historians. Among the historians concerned with the peculiarities of American violence are those who specialize in the …

Pop Goes The Weasel: How Greed And A Good Barbecue Hoodwinked A Small Town, Kelli C. Ladwig
Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal
On October 4, 1921, Sure Pop Oil Company held a barbecue to celebrate the newly built oil derrick and attract new investors in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. The Eureka Springs Historical Museum has photos from the celebration. Local lore suggests that the oil company owners were "confidence men" who were out to "fleece" the citizens of Eureka Springs. A clearer picture of the Sure Pop Oil Company and its president can be attained by studying newspaper articles and census records. Start with the zeal after the discovery of oil in El Dorado, Arkansas, coupled with the lack of federal and state …
The Reintegration Of The Loyalists In Post-Revolutionary America, Marco J. Lloyd
The Reintegration Of The Loyalists In Post-Revolutionary America, Marco J. Lloyd
The Gettysburg Historical Journal
Most White Loyalists were able to successfully reintegrate into society after the American Revolution. They made their case through decisions to stay and petition for amnesty, which was helped by demonstrating that they embodied republican civic virtues and by making amends with their community. Americans were willing to accept them back into society because of republican ideals, exhaustion from the war, the desire to repair community cohesion, and the social ties that prevailed between both sides throughout the war.

This thesis uses the narrative of Charles Sumner's Caning to examine the shift in national public perceptions of patriotism and the disconnect in the late Antebellum period between North and South. Using the metrics of presidential action, national and state newspaper stories, and social thought, this paper traces the 50 years between the War of 1812 and the Civil War, looking specifically at the development of localist politics in the end of the period.

Richard King: From Rags To Ranching, Kaileigh S. Freeman
[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)
The legacy of the Wild West, known for its rugged individualism and search for new lives, is represented through the journey of Richard King and the founding of King Ranch in South Texas. This paper follows King from his humble beginnings as an orphan in New York City to his rise as the “king” of ranching. Drawing from historical accounts and analyses, the paper explores the innovations made by Richard King that would shape the face of Texas ranching amidst the challenges of the frontier and remedy environmental and logistical boundaries. King's ability to work alongside businessmen greatly benefited his …
