The Agrarians From The Perspective Of Fifty Years: An Essay Review, Willard B. Gatewood, Jr. Dec 2021

The Agrarians From The Perspective Of Fifty Years: An Essay Review, Willard B. Gatewood, Jr.

Florida Historical Quarterly

In the fall of 1930 Harper and Brothers, an old and prestigious northern publishing house, brought out a collection of essays by “twelve Southerners,” entitled I’ll Take My Stand: The South and the Agrarian Tradition. Described at the time as a Southern or Southern Agrarian manifesto, the collection came into existence, according to one of the contributors, as “a sort of happening”— “a coalescence of circumstances and people and conditions” unlikely to reoccur. The contributors, known as the Agrarians, were for the most part natives of the rural, small-town areas of the westernmost South, and most at some point had …

German Tourists In Florida: A Two-Century Record, Earl R. Beck Dec 2021

German Tourists In Florida: A Two-Century Record, Earl R. Beck

Florida Historical Quarterly

In 1981, 74,219 West German tourists landed in the airport in Miami. This figure, which represents over a ten per cent increase over 1980, does not take account of many Germans who came to Florida after landing elsewhere in the United States. Those thousands of Germans who visit Florida today are continuing the lively interest in this state which began more than two hundred years ago. But, strangely enough, the number of German accounts of Florida and its myriad lures has been quite small. Stranger still, while tourism has grown, German writing about Florida has declined, and some recent accounts …

An Integrated Free School In Civil War Florida, Gerald Schwartz Dec 2021

An Integrated Free School In Civil War Florida, Gerald Schwartz

Florida Historical Quarterly

During the Federal occupation of Jacksonville in February 1864, an attempt was made by Dr. Esther Hill Hawks, an abolitionist lady from New Hampshire, to operate there the state’s first racially integrated free school. This kind of an integrated facility, fleeting though it proved to be, was among the first in any southern state.

Billy Graham In Florida, Lois Ferm Dec 2021

Billy Graham In Florida, Lois Ferm

Florida Historical Quarterly

Billy Graham who suffered periodic attacks of influenza when he was a young boy, first came to Florida because the doctors hoped that a warm climate would restore his health. However, in terms of his career in evangelism, his decision to move South seems almost providential, for as a student at the Florida Bible Institute in Tampa in the 1930s, he was exposed to a veritable “Who’s Who” of evangelical giants. As a high school student, Billy had accepted the claims of Jesus Christ on his life and had surrendered his life to Christ in a revival service held in …

Educational Opportunities In Spanish West Florida, 1781-1821, Jack D. L. Holmes

Florida Historical Quarterly

Governor Vicente Folch y Juan opened his son Stephen’s 1797 letter with eager hands. Due to the Anglo-Spanish war, communications to Pensacola had been delayed, and he was relieved to learn that both his sons were well. To his superior, Captain-General Conde de Santa Clara, at Havana, Governor Folch wrote, “The lack of opportunity which is generally true of these (frontier) places for providing the youth with an adequate education, has induced me to send my sons to London where they may learn English to perfection, such skill being of inestimable value in these provinces.“

Passage To The New Eden: Tourism In Miami From Flagler Through Everest G. Sewell, Paul S. George Dec 2021

Passage To The New Eden: Tourism In Miami From Flagler Through Everest G. Sewell, Paul S. George

Florida Historical Quarterly

When Henry M. Flagler’s Florida East Coast Railway (FEC) steamed into Miami in April 1896, Florida was already on its way to becoming a tourist haven. With its salubrious climate and primeval setting, the state was, for many visitors a veritable paradise, an accessible Eden. This image was timeless. William Bartram, in his eighteenth-century account of a visit to Florida, described the area as “A blessed unviolated spot of earth . . . [a] blissful garden.” 1 Florida remained remote to most northerners until the middle of the nineteenth century, when a small stream of visitors began arriving, many of …

Liberal Arts On The Florida Frontier: The Founding Of Rollins College, 1885-1890, Jack C. Lane

Florida Historical Quarterly

Although unique in its particulars, the founding of Rollins College in 1885 strongly resembled the formation and establishment of liberal arts colleges throughout the nineteenth century. Three forces-educational denominationalism, community boosterism, and real estate entrepreneurism-converged during the century to create a mania of indiscriminate college-building that produced as many as 700 institutions by the beginning of the Civil War. Founded in the waning years of the “ages of colleges,” Rollins fits this nineteenth-century pattern. It was the Congregational Church that established Rollins in the small frontier town of Winter Park, Florida. The local citizens provided most of the funds, and …

Florida's Relations With Cuba During The Civil War, James W. Cortada Dec 2021

Florida's Relations With Cuba During The Civil War, James W. Cortada

Florida Historical Quarterly

The geographical proximity of Spain’s colony of Cuba to Florida has insured, throughout the nineteenth century, that they would share a unique relationship. Political pundits, military strategists, international businessmen, and later, historians, continually recognized that geography, history, and politics influenced Cuba and Florida, intertwining their affairs. Geography by itself, although an important element in their relations, remained less significant than the much broader political struggle that existed between the United States and Spain over control first of North America, and later over the Caribbean. Florida and Cuba were pawns in this much larger international game of chess that throughout the …

Immigrants And Radicals In Tampa, Florida, George E. Pozzetta Dec 2021

Immigrants And Radicals In Tampa, Florida, George E. Pozzetta

Florida Historical Quarterly

The role that radical ideologies have played in the experience of America’s immigrant groups has been the subject of increasing scholarly attention. Historians are coming to realize that these philosophies often exerted a substantial influence on ethnic group development. This was particularly true of the manner in which immigrants interacted with the labor movement in America. That these developments have often been overlooked has been explained, in part, by a lack of documentary evidence available for use in charting the events, issues, and personalities of the radical world. In recent years, however, a growing volume of historical material has become …

Legislating A Homestead Bill: Thomas Hart Benton And The Second Seminole War, Michael E. Welsh Dec 2021

Legislating A Homestead Bill: Thomas Hart Benton And The Second Seminole War, Michael E. Welsh

Florida Historical Quarterly

Of the many causes Thomas Hart Benton espoused in his long Senate career, few demonstrate more clearly his perseverance and determination than his support for Florida during the Second Seminole War (1835-1842), culminating in his Armed Occupation Act of 1842. The United States government and its citizens, in pursuit of a policy of aggressive territorial growth, met the stubborn resistance of an exotic blend of runaway slaves and expatriate Indians in the swamps and marshes of the Florida peninsula. Determined not to suffer a fate similar to other southeastern tribes during the years of Indian removal, the Seminoles mounted a …

The Menendez Marquez Cattle Barony At La Chua And The Determinants Of Economic Expansion In Seventeenth-Century Florida, Amy Bushnell Dec 2021

The Menendez Marquez Cattle Barony At La Chua And The Determinants Of Economic Expansion In Seventeenth-Century Florida, Amy Bushnell

Florida Historical Quarterly

Spanish Florida has the historical reputation of a bleak and unfriendly place, unproductive, impoverished, and unhealthy, where governors and soldiers, friars and passive Indian converts were unable to defend their own borders, much less make the land self-sustaining. The doleful letters from officials of the colony about the lateness or inadequacy of the garrison’s situado have made an impact on researchers, if they did not on the Crown. In recent years, however, examples of economic activity have been examined that belie this picture of total dependency. There were times during the seventeenth century when Spanish Florida approached self-sufficiency and was …
