"A DECISION AGAINST WOMAN," blazed a headline in the college newspaper, the Industrial Collegian, in June 1895, referring to an oratory contest in which a female college student was allegedly denied victory because of her gender. "SHALL WE PLAY BASKET BALL?" invited another story headline in the April 1897 Collegian. "The time has passed when the girl who would indulge in out door sports is not considered a lady." In 1911, an essay entitled "The Emancipation of Woman" appeared in the college's Jack Rabbit yearbook, proclaiming, "This is the age of the new woman." These items from the dawn of …

African Americans And Land Loss In Texas: Government Duplicity And Discrimination Based On Race And Class, Debra A. Reid
Faculty Research & Creative Activity
"African American Farmers and Land Loss in Texas," surveys the ways that discrimination at the local, state, and national levels constrained minority farmers during the twentieth century. It considers the characteristics of small-scale farming that created liabilities for landowners regardless of race, including state and federal programs that favored commercial and agribusiness interests. In addition to economic challenges African American farmers had to negotiate racism in the Jim Crow South. The Texas Agricultural Extension Service, the state branch of the USDA's Extension Service, segregated in 1915. The "Negro" division gave black farmers access to information about USDA programs, but it …

The Justice Of War On Iraq, Brian Stiltner
The Justice Of War On Iraq, Brian Stiltner
Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications
The author argues that the U.S. and its partners have rightly arrived at war on Iraq as a just and necessary last resort. The potential problems with the just-war case are notable, particularly concerning the after-effects of the war, but they do not incurably undermine the case for going to war. Instead, both supporters and critics of the war around the world should strive to keep their governments committed to post-war reconstruction and a transition to a free and stable government in Iraq. Several just war criteria, particularly as these are articulated in the Catholic tradition, are used to assess …
