Evidence-Based Decision-Making In Teacher Preparation, Kristen Crabtree-Groff
Evidence-Based Decision-Making In Teacher Preparation, Kristen Crabtree-Groff
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
Cooperative Learning, Flexible Grouping, and Scaffolding to name a few. Each of these strategies asks teachers to make instructional decisions based on the collection and analysis of data. In addition, classroom management practices, authentic assessment and student growth measures necessitate clear evidence gathering. As teacher candidates progress through their programs, they should encounter evidence-based decision-making — multiple means of collecting evidence, analyzing the evidence, setting goals, and evaluating results – throughout their coursework. We ask our teacher candidates to be reflective practitioners, in essence we ask them to use information to make evidence based decisions. The current pressures of accountability …

Impact Of The Media On The Senior Secondary School Students Performance In Speech Work In English Language, G.O. Oyinloye, I.O. Adeleye
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
Most Nigerian students learn English Language as a second Language (L2).They have acquired their mother tongues (L1) and are very proficient in them before entering the school. In most cases, many secondary school students do not have the opportunity to use English language at home. For such students, English Language learning and use is restricted to the classroom. Therefore, these students use their mother tongue more in the school environment, at home and for interpersonal relationships. These practices are negatively affecting the production of some sounds in English Language, which is the language of education, government, commerce and international communication.
Managing Conflict In Organisation-An Overview, Muyiwa Adeyemi
Managing Conflict In Organisation-An Overview, Muyiwa Adeyemi
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
In any organization, effective administration of the resources available is very important and paramount to the attainment of its objectives. The human aspect of the resources is most important and crucial as it is the one responsible for the co-ordination of other factors and more importantly conflict situation among staff cannot be over-emphasized. It is known fact that no two workers are the same, even twins are only alike. Nwakwo (1987), Craston (2002) and Onanuga and Arikewuyo (2005) describes administration as the careful and systematic arrangements and use of resources (human and material), situation and opportunities for the achievement of …
Parental Education, Parental Death, Poverty And Socio-Economic Impact On School Attendance Status Of Children In India, Subhash Barman
Parental Education, Parental Death, Poverty And Socio-Economic Impact On School Attendance Status Of Children In India, Subhash Barman
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
Parental education plays an important link for intergenerational mobility. Parental education is, of course, one aspect of family background that influences children’s subsequent achievement as adults. The general view is that the higher educated parents provide adequate environment, which facilitates their children’s opportunities for educational attainments. There is also a positive relationship between parental education, especially mother’s education, and educational attainment of children. Corwyn and Bradely (2002) found that maternal education had the most consistent direct influence on children’s cognitive and behavioural outcomes with some indirect influence through a cognitively stimulating home environment.
Professional Redevelopment: Interruptions In Knowledge Management, Joe Procter
Professional Redevelopment: Interruptions In Knowledge Management, Joe Procter
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
Learning organizations are a strategic response to increased competition due to globalization (Amy, 2007; Dodgson, 1993; Senge, 2006; Tsang, 1997). Organizations that are able to utilize the ideas and energy of their employees are better prepared to operate in a global economy. An understanding of cross-cultural knowledge management for learning organizations is highly relevant and adaptive to a variety of industries because learning is a continuous process for any organization. Educators are important leaders in the development of participants in the global economy. Studies of cross-cultural management in learning organizations inform education and prescribe methods of knowledge management for efficient …

An Examination Of The Relationship Between Empowerment And Organizational Commitment, Gholamreza Jandaghi, Reza Borghei, Hasan Matin, Nasrin Dastani
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
A rapidly changing environment threatens the survival of many organizations. The global economy propelled by booming regional economies, new media and information technology, universal consumer cultures, emerging global standards, and opportunities for corporate cost-sharing, has dramatically changed the environment in which organizations exist today (Ohema,1998,p.17). The survival of many organizations is threatened, in part, by reluctance to adapt to the changing environment. “Ecology evolutionary theory suggests that uncertain, volatile environments will support diverse organizational forms and that the apparent winners will fluctuate from time to time as conditions change” ( Hannan and Freeman, 1989, p.27).

Exploring Unique Dimensions Of Caring, Len Austin
Exploring Unique Dimensions Of Caring, Len Austin
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
This paper seeks to increase the growing body of knowledge relative to the “accompanying characteristics” or attendant attributes of caring (submissiveness, sacrifice, the ability to individualize, and being able to anticipate the needs of others). It also offers are four unique philosophical underpinnings of the attribute of caring. These dimensions include the reciprocal nature of caring, the hierarchical nature of caring, the requirement to be pro-active in caring, and being knowledgeable about the changing timetable of caring in people’s lives. In addition, an example of one university’s efforts to integrate caring across the curriculum is examined.
Importance Of Proper Dressing In Modern Living In Nigeria, D.O. Arubayi
Importance Of Proper Dressing In Modern Living In Nigeria, D.O. Arubayi
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
Dressing is an act of putting on clothes and usually a means of expressing our individuality. Thompson (2005) citing Kaiser (1997) opined that dressing is the total arrangement of all outward detectable modification of the body and all material objects added to it. The implication of this is that dressing which is an aspect of clothing is the external covering put on the body for different purposes. The way an individual dresses is a tangible expression of an individual’s unique value system. Arubayi (2004), enumerated the followings as reasons why people wear clothes: to protect, to cover their nakedness, to …

Online Graduate Study In Education: An Examination Of Tuition Costs And Faculty Salaries For Public, Private, And Proprietary Institutions Of Higher Learning In Texas, Scarlet Anderson, Amy Davis, Brandy Fair, Leah Wickersham
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
Technology plays a major role in the delivery of educational services in today’s colleges and universities. Gumport and Chun (2005) stated that enrollment in for-credit distance education courses had more than doubled between 1997 and 2000. Distance education is undergoing rapid growth and expansion as colleges and universities rush to offer online courses and degrees in a variety of subject areas. Schrodt and Turman (2005) found students often expect college instructors to incorporate some form of technology into the class design even in traditional non-distance education courses. Although many educators feel that advances in technology will positively change the way …

capable and sophisticated. Although countries like Brazil, China and India have made significant strides, most African countries have fallen behind in this journey. The good thing is, with globalisation and free trade; certain technologies previously controlled by certain developed countries are finding their way into the developing world markets without the associated costs. For example, some multinationals now invest in developing countries in order to obtain a base for export to other subregions and by doing so make available aspects of their technologies. The opportunity developing countries have is to create an environment which would attract multinationals to invest into …
Looking At A More Comprehensive Picture Of Reading As Enacted By Second-Grade Readers, Glorianne Lopata-Prosperi
Looking At A More Comprehensive Picture Of Reading As Enacted By Second-Grade Readers, Glorianne Lopata-Prosperi
Wayne State University Dissertations
This study examined the reading of fiction and nonfiction text by second grade readers. A comparison of their reading processes, comprehension, and perceptions are highlighted. The study was conducted given the changing demands of reading in the 21st century and the current literacy experiences typically presented in elementary schools.
The study investigated three questions: For second-grade readers, some with more exposure to nonfiction text and some with less: 1) What are the differences, if any, in their reading processes? 2) What differences, if any, occur in their comprehension? and 3) What differences, if any, are there in participant's perceptions of …

Transnational Students' Perspectives On Schooling In The United States And Mexico: The Salience Of School Experience And Country Of Birth, Edmund T. Hamann, Víctor Zúñiga, Juan Sánchez García
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
Students in Mexican schools with previous experience in US schools are transnational students. To the extent their Mexican schooling does not recognize or build on their US life and school experience and their American school experience did not anticipate their later relocation to Mexico, these students are incompletely attended to by school. Yet these students, like all students, are agentive and have some control over how they make sense of their schooling.
As schooling becomes an increasingly common institutional presence across the world and as decided majorities of children now attend at least some version of primary school, it is …

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
North American society is becoming increasingly diverse through immigration and the birth of children into immigrant families. The foreign-born population in the United States (U.S.) represented 11.1% of the total population in the year 2000, for a total of 31.1 million people who were born outside of the country. In addition, over 22 million people in the U.S. changed their state of residence between 1995 and 2000. In Canada, 18.4% of the total population, for a total of 5.4 million people, were born outside the country, and 11.2% of the population identified themselves as members of a visible minority group. …

Developing Competency Models Of Faculty Developers: Using World Café To Foster Dialogue, Debra Dawson, Judy Britnell, Alicia Hitchcock
To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
Recent research by Chism (2007); Sorcinelli, Austin, Eddy, and Beach (2006); and Taylor (2005) speaks to the critical roles that faculty developers play in ensuring institutional success. Yet we have not as a profession identified the specific competencies necessary for success at different career stages. Our research generated these competencies for three faculty developer positions—entry-level, senior-level, and director—within a teaching and learning center. We used World Café, a collaborative discussion-based technique, to engage developers in building a matrix of competencies for each position and in determining how these competencies could be demonstrated.
A Conceptual Framework For Higher Education Faculty Mentoring, Pamela S. Lottero-Perdue, Steve Fifield
A Conceptual Framework For Higher Education Faculty Mentoring, Pamela S. Lottero-Perdue, Steve Fifield
To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
There is considerable variability in conceptions of faculty mentoring in higher education. Rather than view this diversity as a problem, we see it as a potential resource that can inform design, implementation, and evaluation of faculty mentoring. To learn from this diversity, we review the literature on facuity mentoring in higher education to create a conceptual framework of mentoring. The conceptual framework is a tool that program administrators, participants, and evaluators can use to adapt mentoring to the unique needs of particular faculty and institutions.

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
Collecting and using information about faculty skills can serve as an organizational development activity to guide faculty evaluation and professional development policy and practice with the goal of leading to improved teaching and learning. This chapter presents findings from a study with international, local, quantitative, and qualitative components. Readers are encouraged to explore data patterns and consider courses of action that these imply, and to reflect on the potential usefulness of the Meta-Profession model for furthering reflection, dialogue, and action on development and evaluation processes on their own campus.

Communication Climate, Comfort, And Cold Calling: An Analysis Of Discussion-Based Courses At Multiple Universities, Tasha J. Souza, Elise J. Dallimore, Eric Aoki, Brian C. Pilling
To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
One of the challenges in discussion facilitation is creating a climate that allows multiple voices to be heard. Although the practice of calling on students whose hands are not raised has been used to engage the entire class in discussions, many believe that cold calling sabotages the communication climate and makes students extremely uncomfortable. This study examines the impact of cold calling on student comfort and communication climate. The results suggest that when instructors choose to cold-call, they must create a supportive communication climate to ensure student comfort. This study challenges the assumption that cold calling makes students uncomfortable.
Theoretical Frameworks For Academic Dishonesty: A Comparative Review, Michele Dipietro
Theoretical Frameworks For Academic Dishonesty: A Comparative Review, Michele Dipietro
To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
Academic dishonesty has so far been understood using theoretical frameworks derived from criminology literature. These frameworks contribute pieces of the puzzle and even enjoy some empirical support, but conceptualizing students as delinquents is problematic and ultimately ineffective. This chapter reviews the current frameworks, including their theoretical underpinnings, empirical support, and strategies they suggest, and goes on to analyze their limitations and suggest alternative frameworks.

Developing And Renewing Department Chair Leadership: The Role Of A Teaching Center In Administrative Training, Mary C. Wright, Constance E. Cook, Chris O'Neal
To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
Most faculty development centers offer limited resources for leadership development, and most existing programs focus on training the new chair. The key questions we address are: What role do teaching centers play in administrative professional development? How can we develop programs that assist new chairs with their immediate questions, while also promoting continued growth in institutional leadership? We present one model at the University of Michigan, initiated by the provost and organized by the Center for Research on Learning and Teaching, which involves an extensive needs assessment process, a developmentally oriented leadership training program, and an evaluation.

Transforming Teaching Cultures: Departmental Teaching Fellows As Agents Of Change, Cassandra Volpe Horii
To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
The Departmental Teaching Fellows (DTF) program of the Derek Bok Center for Teaching and Learning at Harvard University employs doctoral students as peer teaching mentors. Four years of program assessment data include quantitative work inventories, surveys and self-reports, interviews of faculty and administrators, and a survey of all graduate students recently teaching in arts and sciences. Observed program outcomes include (1) better informal support for teaching, (2) higher quality and quantity of interactions between graduate students and faculty on teaching, and (3) more systematic opportunities for teaching-related professional development. Qualitative assessment data suggest that the DTFs occupy several liminal positions …

Education Faculty Articles and Research
Success in the 21st century, for individuals and societies, requires competence in comprehending and communicating in the academic disciplines--the natural sciences, history, geography, and more. The Read-Write Cycle (RWC) Project, a three year longitudinal research study conducted from 2005-2008 in ten public elementary schools in southern California, explored the effectiveness of curriculum and instructional strategies that integrate literacy with disciplinary knowledge with the simultaneous goals of: (1) enhancing students' literacy outcomes; and (2) broadening and deepening knowledge of the content area. Funded by the U.S. Institute of Education Sciences, the RWC Project concentrated over years one and two on 1,024 …

Human resource development professionals have been investing several resources to provide necessary skills, knowledge and abilities to their employees in order to get competitive advantage in the global market and to achieve organizational goals. To provide these necessary skills, knowledge and abilities, organizations have been investing millions of dollars in formal training programs. The main objective of these training programs is to align the employee‟s expertise with organizational goals. The organizations can only achieve their desired objectives when employees transfer the learned skills at workplace. But unfortunately, employees transfer a small percentage of learned skills at workplace. To effectively manage …
