Athletes’ Perceptions Of Coaches’ Emotional Intelligence Competencies, Terry G. Elliott, Jennifer L. Vansickle, Heidi Hancher-Rauch

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

This study compared intercollegiate athletic coaches’ self-perceptions to the perceptions of their players concerning a coach’s emotional intelligence. Sixteen coaches and 223 players from two Division I softball conferences completed the Emotional Competence Inventory-2 (Boyaztis, Goleman, & Hay/McBer, 2001). Mean analysis revealed that coaches rated themselves higher on 14 of the 18 emotional intelligence competencies and on all four emotional intelligence clusters. Coaches rated themselves highest in Social Awareness (Error! Bookmark not defined.x¯ =4.27/5) while their athletes rated them highest in Self Awareness (Error! Bookmark not defined.x¯ =3.63/5). Rebranding Nigeria Through Educational Process For A Better Future: A Call For Policy Review And Development For Creating Standards In Business Education, Kayode Bolarinwa, Lukman Adeola, Sunday Ojetunde

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Business education is vital for success in virtually every career. All citizens must apply business skills and concepts to meet the challenges of a changing society and workplace (Smith, 2006). Business instruction is organized to prepare individuals for occupations in administrative office systems, accounting and finance, management, and computer information systems. It is the enterprise of education directed at the study and research of the field of business. It includes secondary education and higher education or university education, with the greatest activity in the latter. It is often or almost always oriented toward preparing students for the practice of an …

Relationship Between Principals And Teachers’ Perceptions Of Principals’ Performance Of Staff Development And Students Personnel In Secondary Schools, Delta Central Senatorial District, Nigeria, E.D. Nakpodia

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The success of any organisation solely depends upon the quality and efficiency of its staff personnel , who perform the functions necessary for the fulfilment of stated goals and objectives. These assumptions is as applicable to the school system as it is to any organisation involving human efforts. The extent to which the quality of education succeeds will depend strictly upon the quality of the personnel engaged in the educational process, and upon the effectiveness with which they carry out individual and group responsibilities. (Nakpodia, 2006)

Teacher Education In Nigeria: Past, Present And Future Challenges., Israel Osokoya Jan 2010

Teacher Education In Nigeria: Past, Present And Future Challenges., Israel Osokoya

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The history of western education in Nigeria was intimately bound up with the history of western education in Europe. During and after the Dark Ages in Europe, the church dominated the business of education and this had a tremendous impact on the intellectual life of people not only in Europe and America but also in the British colonial territories of Asia and Africa. Historically, the British imperial ambition and effective occupation of Nigeria dated back to the second half of the 19th century even though some Europeans including British traders had assumed trading activities with the people in the coastal …

The Influence Of Instruction On Leadership, Courtney Gehret Jan 2010

The Influence Of Instruction On Leadership, Courtney Gehret

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

For decades, researchers have been studying leadership and have found it to be very difficult to fully understand. A basic knowledge of leadership is available, but the details are hard to specify. These details include the complexity of the construct of leadership (Bass & Stogdill, 1990), the difficulty of forming a single definition or theoretical perspective from many possible options (Edmunds & Yewchuk, 1996; Simonton, 1995), and the lack of valid and reliable measures of leadership ability (Edmunds, 1998; Jarosewich, Pfeiffer, & Morris, 2002). All of these issues make researching leadership difficult because it is hard to gain new knowledge …

A Measure Of Students’ Connectedness In Tertiary Institutions In Anambra State Of Nigeria, Ada Omenyi, Ngozi Agu, Christi Odimegwu Jan 2010

A Measure Of Students’ Connectedness In Tertiary Institutions In Anambra State Of Nigeria, Ada Omenyi, Ngozi Agu, Christi Odimegwu

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The Nigerian higher education has been accused of performing below expectation when judged from both internal and global benchmarks of quality of output, peaceful co-existence on campus, fair conduct of examination, amongst others. The nature of higher education is such that its students are seen by members of campus community as adults who have attained the age of taking full responsibility of their behaviours and students on their part see themselves as those set free from the encumbrances of family control and influences. Indeed the campus environment is one perceived as “everyman to himself”. Students’ relationship with teachers, fellow students, …

Academic Achievement And Demographic Traits Of Homeschool Students: A Nationwide Study, Brian Ray Jan 2010

Academic Achievement And Demographic Traits Of Homeschool Students: A Nationwide Study, Brian Ray

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The body of research on home-based education has expanded dramatically since the first studies and academic articles of the late 1970s that dealt with the modern homeschool movement. Numerous researchers have examined the academic achievement of home-educated children and youth, their social, emotional, and psychological development, and their success into adulthood, and various aspects of homeschool families in general. Researchers have also explored myriad other aspects and issues related to home education in disciplines such as philosophy, sociology, and law. Only a handful of studies, however, have looked closely at a large nationwide sample of home educators and their children …

Academic Leadership In Higher Education: A “Participative” Perspective From One Institution, M.P. Koen, E.M. Bitzer Jan 2010

Academic Leadership In Higher Education: A “Participative” Perspective From One Institution, M.P. Koen, E.M. Bitzer

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The purpose of this paper is not to highlight the diverse characteristics of leaders in higher education, but to focus on those united strengths that acknowledge followership. We therefore attempt a higher education leadership profile (see Table 2) encompassing the vital attributes (identified by participants in our empirical study). We regard this set of attributes as being at the heart of dealing with challenges in this millennium. Not only do leaders have to understand themselves and the higher education environment in which they operate, but the followers need to be equally aware of the superman/woman expectations demanded of leaders.

Dangerous Liaisons: Non-Western Religious Minority Groups And American Public Education, Steve Charbonneau Jan 2010

Dangerous Liaisons: Non-Western Religious Minority Groups And American Public Education, Steve Charbonneau

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Public education and so many institutions charged with serving the public are struggling to serve cultural minority groups who see the world and interact with it in ways quite foreign to mainstream America. A lack of knowledge, on the part of public institutions, has led to the further alienation of certain minority subgroups and has made the public institutions that serve them ineffective. Increasing institutional knowledge of cultural minority groups is one of the critical steps American pubic educators must take towards cultural competency (Hoffman, 2004).

Interestingly, factual recall skill is not present equally in all human beings. Some people have the capacity to keep things for long in …

A Model Of Organisational Leadership Development Informing Succession Development: Elements And Practices, Glenys Drew, Lisa Ehrich Jan 2010

A Model Of Organisational Leadership Development Informing Succession Development: Elements And Practices, Glenys Drew, Lisa Ehrich

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The Lantern model has been developed in response to a perceived need to offer an integrated, systematic approach to organisational and succession leadership development. The model offers an organising framework for considering succession leadership development in a strategic, integrated way. The concept is based on organisational development and leadership literature which sees leadership development not as a series of ‘tacked on’ activities but as an organic ‘whole of organisation’ approach fostering the relevant knowledge, skills and understandings which support and ‘grow’ leaders as the organisation goes about its business. This paper explores how such an ideal might happen, and it …

A Study Of Character Of Prospective Administrators In Administration Preparation Programs, K. Roberts Jan 2010

A Study Of Character Of Prospective Administrators In Administration Preparation Programs, K. Roberts

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

In the world in which we live character is at the forefront. It’s hard to tell what is the truth as the lines have been blurred because of a word called “spin” and a person’s own mental justification for their actions. Daily accounts of superintendents and other school administrators are headlined in the media, whether mainstream media or specialized education media, about failures in character. What caused that superintendent or administrator to sacrifice their character? They relied on their reputation and became lax in their moral obligations and judgments.

An Examination Of Tension In The Space Between Leadership Philosophy And The Cultural Reality Of Schools, Lisa Starr Jan 2010

An Examination Of Tension In The Space Between Leadership Philosophy And The Cultural Reality Of Schools, Lisa Starr

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Diversity is what gives our society depth and arguably beauty but it also problematizes already complex social issues like the importance and value placed on the education. In part, this challenge exists because public education is founded on the “values and belief systems of the dominant cultural and linguistic class” (Goddard & Hart, 2007, p. 16) yet schools are a complex, heterogeneous weave of cultures (Murakami-Ramalho, 2008). According to Chambers (2003), Canadian students are “probably the most ethnically, racially, linguistically, and religiously diverse of any school population in the world” (p. 223). This is no less true in the United …

Can Children With Adhd Benefit From Instruction In Social And Emotional Intelligences?, Jeanne Moore Jan 2010

Can Children With Adhd Benefit From Instruction In Social And Emotional Intelligences?, Jeanne Moore

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Since their establishment, schools have played a central role in the socialization process of children. Children and youth of diverse backgrounds, socioeconomic status, and varying ability are brought together in large numbers on a daily basis. For many students, the hours they spend in school are the best hours of the day to develop behaviorally and academically. The schools are responsible for helping these individuals develop critical skills and essential life skills in order to live successful lives. The repertoire of abilities goes further than the slender band of word-and-number skills that schools traditionally focus on. By giving students the …

Effect Of Instruction In Metacognitive Self-Assessment Strategy On Chemistry Self-Efficacy And Achievement Of Senior Secondary School Students In Rivers State, Nigeria, Jacobson Nbina, B. Viko

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Chemistry is one of the major branches of science. There are various applications of Chemistry in home or industry. Exploring Principal Leadership Roles Within A Community Of Practice To Promote Science Performance Of English Language Learners, David Carrejo, Teresa Cortez, Judy Reinhartz

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The world we live in continues to become more technologically advanced and educating youth to become productive citizens in an ever-changing global society is vital. The importance and necessity of educating an increasingly diverse student population has become a top priority for Pre-K-16 educators. To meet this challenge and set priorities for serving English Language Learners (ELLs), educators at all levels need to forge a clear vision and shared commitment for fostering “… a sense of belonging and community that inspires collaboration” among its members for the success of all students (Texas Association of School Administrators, 2008, p. 4).

Family Structure Characteristics And Academic Success: Supporting The Work Of School Counselors, Gerra Perkins, Kayla Milstead Jan 2010

Family Structure Characteristics And Academic Success: Supporting The Work Of School Counselors, Gerra Perkins, Kayla Milstead

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The family is a child’s primary context for socialization and greatly affects a child’s well-being. Historical contexts show that families have been evolving for centuries due to social and economic factors, thus resulting in various family structures. A stable, traditional family structure is most conducive to academic success (Tillman, 2007). Much research has found that children raised in a non-traditional home are at a disadvantage (Astone & McLanahan, 1991; Halpern-Meekin & Tach, 2008). The research on the consequences of single-parent families suggests children of single parent families are more likely to be impoverished, to break the law, to abuse drugs, …

Growing Pains: Transitional Issues In Higher Education, Louis Fletcher Jan 2010

Growing Pains: Transitional Issues In Higher Education, Louis Fletcher

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

High school provides a structured environment which moves young adults through a daily routine of educational and social activities. Teachers and administrators are openly concerned about the student’s feelings and attitudes toward the overall educational experience. Parents are usually close at hand to encourage and empower their students through the tough times. They also provide financial support and transportation, at a minimum, when things are routine. Secondary education is intended to be a warm cocoon which nurtures the student-caterpillar into a well adjusted young butterfly within a parent-teacher chrysalis. Higher education has not traditionally provided the aforementioned structure; therefore, the …

Implicit Models Of School Improvement: A Mixed Method Analysis, Robert Griffore, Lillian Phenice, John Schweitzer, Robert Green Jan 2010

Implicit Models Of School Improvement: A Mixed Method Analysis, Robert Griffore, Lillian Phenice, John Schweitzer, Robert Green

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

There is a persistent belief that public schools are profoundly in need of improvement (Berliner & Biddle, 1995). Given substantial research on teaching literature (Borman, Hewes, Overman, & Brown, 2003; Hertling, 2000), it is not clear why more progress has not been made. Perhaps an answer may be found in the complexity of the educational literature, which provides a confused map toward accomplishing school improvement. Educational leaders are left in the position of relying on either imprecisely formulated or idiosyncratic and implicit models of school improvement without clear guidelines to follow for specific contexts. Models appear as ex post facto, …

Job Satisfaction And Motivation: Understanding Its Impact On Employee Commitment And Organisational Performance, Kwasi Dartey-Baah, Agatha Harlley Jan 2010

Job Satisfaction And Motivation: Understanding Its Impact On Employee Commitment And Organisational Performance, Kwasi Dartey-Baah, Agatha Harlley

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Organisations have been described as a social arrangement for the controlled performance of collective goals (Stewart, 1973). They exist basically for two reasons: to maximise profit or share holder value, (Huczynski and Buchanan, 1991). Latest trends in management encourage the integration of the needs of employees with that of organisations. Maximising profit through growth/expansion and increased share value should not be the only motivation for organisations. Investment in people should be at the fore of business strategy and in developing human resources which invariably benefits the respective organisations. The role and effective use and management of human resources in enhancing …

Motivational Techniques, Communication Patterns, And Job Productivity Of Non-Academic Staff In Ogun State Owned Universities, A. Ositoye, Muyiwa Adeyemi Jan 2010

Motivational Techniques, Communication Patterns, And Job Productivity Of Non-Academic Staff In Ogun State Owned Universities, A. Ositoye, Muyiwa Adeyemi

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The classical economists of the 19th-century had the idea that individuals choose to maximize profits in every relation that they ever get involved in. Both the contemporary economists and educationists have equally held strongly to this belief (Kottak, 2005). For this reason, both individual psychologists and economists have shown a great concern about how best to achieve motivation (in the industrial/ economic setting) in order to produce the desired results of profit maximization (Ibid, 2005). Such a concern is, nevertheless, a worthwhile concern since productivity can be said to be the raison detre of any management and that of any …

Art education remains an academic illusion until, the return of Onabolu in 1922 to Nigeria after his training abroad. Onabolu, a man highly respected by both his country and Europeans alike, officially introduced formal art teaching to Lagos schools.1 He equally used his portraiture to immortalize Nigerian men, who took part in the Africa struggle.2

Specifically, the researcher wanted to find out whether there was a higher level of gender role internalization among female transformational leaders than in female transactional leaders.

Achieving Academic Success In Algebra, Jennifer Geno Jan 2010

Achieving Academic Success In Algebra, Jennifer Geno

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

When we look at landmark legislation that significantly impacted the face of education in our country, we often think of events such as the passage of the Education of All Handicapped Children Act of 1975, whereby students with disabilities would now be brought into our public school system and educated alongside of their non-handicapped peers. We may also think of the landmark decision in Oliver L. Brown et. al. v. The Board of Education of Topeka (Kansas) in 1954, abolishing legalized racial segregation within the United States public school system. In 2006, the ground significantly shifted again for educators-at least …

Are Administrators Disconnected? A Comparison Case Study Of Important Teacher Dispositions In Elementary Science, Bethany Stewart, Charles Eick Jan 2010

Are Administrators Disconnected? A Comparison Case Study Of Important Teacher Dispositions In Elementary Science, Bethany Stewart, Charles Eick

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The identification of dispositions as a gauge for teacher effectiveness has become a part of many school systems and teacher education programs. Accrediting agencies, such as the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (INTASC), have been instrumental in emphasizing teacher dispositions’ presence in higher education institutions and local schools. NCATE defines dispositions as: “Values, commitments, and professional ethics that influence behaviors toward students, families, colleagues, and communities and affect student learning, motivation, and development as well as the educator’s own professional growth” (2006, p. 53). NCATE and INTASC strongly …

College-Readiness: The Current State Of Affairs, W. Barnes

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Imagine a nation in which every student, from Boston to Houston, from Cleveland to Miami, from Chicago’s South side to Compton, from a New Mexico Indian reservation to the Appalachian Mountains, characteristically graduates from high school prepared for postsecondary training (i.e., college, university, trade school, or workforce training). Further, imagine being able to say to every child “you will be provided with a high school that will educate you, challenge you, care for you, support you, and graduate you ready to compete and succeed in this world” (Balfanz & Letgers, 2004, p. 2). The current realities of the proposed outcomes …

Developing Improvisation Skills For Alleviating Poverty In Nigeria: The Place Of Chemistry In Entrepreneurship Education, Jacobson Nbina, B. Viko, S.T. Birabil

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

One of the goals of Education in Nigeria is the acquisition of appropriate skills, the development of mental, physical and social abilities and competencies as equipment for individual to live in and contribute to the development of the society (Federal Government of Nigeria, 2004). The realization of this goal can be impeded by non-availability of science equipment that can ensure effective teaching and learning. Many authors have, however, reported the issue of inadequacy of science equipment in educational institutions in Nigeria. (Ogunleye, 2007 in Ugwu, 2008; Ogunmade et al 2006; Nwagbo, 2008; Bajah, 1982; Osobonye, 2002). It has also been …
