Self-Esteem In Elementary School Children, Joyce Carson Dec 1986

Self-Esteem In Elementary School Children, Joyce Carson

Dissertations

The self-concepts of 232 fourth and fifth grade students in nine classroom groups were measured by use of the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory (SEI). Each student completed the SEI, and the classroom teacher for each student completed the SEI for the students who were the subjects of the study. The subjects were from a medium-sized urban school district and from a lower or middle class socioeconomic background.

Data from the administration of the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory are reported as five separate scores: (a) general concept, (b) social-self-peers, (c) home-parents, (d) school-academic, and (e) total concept.

Data for the subjects were aggregated …

A Study Of The Relationship Between Oral Communication Apprehension And Cognitive Restructuring In High School Speech Class, Lolita Fox Balch

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of a cognitive restructuring unit in the reduction of oral communication apprehension (CA) and the enhancement of semester grades in high school speech class. The unit was designed to raise self-acceptance, and thereby, self-confidence, especially in oral communication.

The experimental treatment method, cognitive restructuring (plus skills training), was compared with the skills training only traditional speech class method. Both treatment methods were reviewed, as well as inappropriate treatment methods for classroom and clinic.

Subjects registered in four different speech courses were randomly assigned by computer to classes which were then …

An Alternative View Of Education For Deaf Children: Part Ii, Lil Brannon, Sue Livingston Jul 1986

An Alternative View Of Education For Deaf Children: Part Ii, Lil Brannon, Sue Livingston

Publications and Research

How might deaf children acquire one of the primary goals of education literacy in English? This article suggests that literacy in English as well as knowledge of the English language can be acquired concomitantly through developmental reading and writing activities that reflect principles of first language acquisition if students bring to these activities relatable experiences which they have already linguistically represented. Such activities engage students in reading and writing where content and context support them in their attempts to actively understand and convey meaning in English. The end product of, rather than the prerequisite for, this meaningful reading and writing …

Arc From Implementation To Payoff Decade And Beyond, Stuart Seely Sprague Jun 1986

Arc From Implementation To Payoff Decade And Beyond, Stuart Seely Sprague

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

Between 1965 and 1974, the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) spent in excess of $2 billion. Since 1974, that figure has climbed to more than $4 billion, with the bulk of these funds spent for road building and vocational schools. Despite this outpouring of funds, many in the region have never heard of the ARC. Part of the problem is ARC's lack of credibility, caused by less than spectacular results.

A Study Of One Group's Experience Of The Advisement Process At Bank Street College, Marianne Montero

Graduate Student Independent Studies

This study describes and analyzes the Advisement Process as experienced by eight members of one advisement group. Most of the data is based on interviews with the students and the advisor of the group. Particular emphasis is given to mental health concepts that are applicable to Advisement.

Also discussed are the philosophy and goals that five of these students have for the children they teacher and how they strive to apply these.

Of the seven students interviewed, six felt that advisement was effective for them. One person did not.

An Alternative View Of Education For Deaf Children: Part I, Sue Livingston Mar 1986

An Alternative View Of Education For Deaf Children: Part I, Sue Livingston

Publications and Research

Quigley and Kretschmer (1982) asserted that the primary goal of education for deaf children should be literacy in English. This article presents an alternative view that there be two primary goals: (a) thinking and learning through the development of meaning-making and meaning-sharing capacities and (b) the acquisition of literacy in English. In this article, the first of these goals is viewed as the more fundamental since it facilitates the acquisition of knowledge while it simultaneously serves as the prerequisite for the acquisition of literacy in English. Because neither direct language instruction nor the exclusive use of English in sign will …

A Teacher Training Program Focusing On Communicative Methodology For Brazilian Teachers Of English As A Foreign Language, Alberto De Paula Santos

MA TESOL Collection

This project is the result of efforts to set up a teacher training program for the Centro Cultural Brasil-Estados Unidos de Curitiba in Brazil. It is especially designed for teachers who have been using teacher-centered classroom techniques and the traditionally structured approaches to teaching, and who are willing to change to a student-centered communicative approach to teaching English.

In chapter one, I give a general overview of the program Iset up and a short description of the Centro. I also state the reasons why I decided to set up this teacher-training program for the Centro.

In chapter two, I describe …

Attitudes Of Preservice Elementary Teachers Toward Science And The Teaching Of Science, Gregory C. Schaeffer Jan 1986

Attitudes Of Preservice Elementary Teachers Toward Science And The Teaching Of Science, Gregory C. Schaeffer

Masters Theses

The importance of attitude toward the teaching and understanding of science has long been a concern of researchers. Its importance in the schools, as a means to influence academic achievement, continues to be felt. Teachers, often without trying, pass on to their students attitudes about science that are unproductive. It is, therefore, important for teachers to possess attitudes supporting the subjects that they teach. The problem then is determining what factors contribute to these teacher attitudes and how are they passed on to students.

Past research has failed to show conclusively what actually contributes to the creation of positive and …

The First Ten Years: Aboriginal Enclaves Tenth Anniversary, Simon Forrest, Colleen Pead

Research outputs pre 2011

An enclave is the territory of a minority group found contained within the territory of a larger group. When the first enclave was started at Mount Lawley College in 1976, it was seen as a place where Aboriginal students could retreat from the hustle and bustle of College life to be with people they felt comfortable with, and refresh themselves for return to the wider world again. A second enclave was established at the Nedlands Campus in 1982, an external one at Broome in 1983 and in 1985 new enclaves have been established at Churchlands, Claremont and Carnarvon. In 1986 …

Functional Literacy: Should It Be Mandatory?, Jeannette Swartz Jan 1986

Functional Literacy: Should It Be Mandatory?, Jeannette Swartz

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Millions of United States citizens are functionally illiterate. Included are persons who cannot read or write or perform simple arithmetic at all. The reasons for failure of voluntary literacy are reviewed, and consideration given to mandatory literacy as a solution to the problem. The effect of functional illiteracy on the military is examined, as well as the relationship of illiteracy to poverty and crime. A survey of educators reveals an awareness among them of this illiteracy problem, and also reveals that some of these educators favor mandatory literacy. The issue of civil rights in relation to mandatory literacy is discussed, …

A Study Of Teachers' Views Of Death Education In The Mattoon, Illinois School District, Ann R. Miller

Masters Theses

Teaching children how to cope with death experiences so that they will not ever suffer from prolonged grief is the responsibility shared by all of society. Along with church leaders and parents, teachers, too, must help teach death education. The purpose of this paper was to explore how well equipped teachers are with adequate training and resources to teach death education in the schools. Also, to explore how concerned teachers are with this area of education.

This study was done through the use of a three-page questionnaire which was developed by the writer. The questionnaire was given to all teachers …
