Quotient Of Laplace And Gumbel Random Variables, Saralees Nadarajah
Quotient Of Laplace And Gumbel Random Variables, Saralees Nadarajah
Department of Statistics: Faculty Publications
The Gumbel and the Laplace distributions are perhaps two of the most applied distributions in engineering. Motivated by engineering issues, the exact distribution of the quotient |X/Y| is derived when X and Y are independent Gumbel and Laplace random variables. Tabulations of the associated percentage points and a computer program for generating them are also given.

We consider in this paper a Peano-Akô property of solution sets in some quasilinear elliptic variational inequalities. As consequences, variants of that property and a partial Hukuhara-Kneser theorem for inequalities are derived.
Boundedness In Functional Dynamic Equations On Time Scales, Elvan Akin, Youssef N. Raffoul
Boundedness In Functional Dynamic Equations On Time Scales, Elvan Akin, Youssef N. Raffoul
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
Using nonnegative definite Lyapunov functionals, we prove general theorems for the boundedness of all solutions of a functional dynamic equation on time scales. We apply our obtained results to linear and nonlinear Volterra integro-dynamic equations on time scales by displaying suitable Lyapunov functionals.

Computation Of A Face Attractiveness Index Based On Neoclassical Canons, Symmetry, And Golden Ratios, Kendra Schmid, David Marx, Ashok Samal
Department of Statistics: Faculty Publications
Analysis of attractiveness of faces has long been a topic of research. Literature has identified many different factors that can be related to attractiveness including symmetry, averageness, sexual dimorphism and adherence to the Golden Ratio. In this research we systematically analyze the role of three factors: symmetry, conformance to Neoclassical Canons and the Golden Ratio in the determination of attractiveness of a face. Unlike many researchers, we focus on the geometry of a face and use actual faces in standardized databases for our analysis. Our results are in agreement with the literature in that males and females generally agree on …
Analyzing Dna Microarrays With Undergraduate Statisticians, Johanna S. Hardin, Laura Hoopes, Ryan Murphy '06
Analyzing Dna Microarrays With Undergraduate Statisticians, Johanna S. Hardin, Laura Hoopes, Ryan Murphy '06
Pomona Faculty Publications and Research
With advances in technology, biologists have been saddled with high dimensional data that need modern statistical methodology for analysis. DNA microarrays are able to simultaneously measure thousands of genes (and the activity of those genes) in a single sample. Biologists use microarrays to trace connections between pathways or to identify all genes that respond to a signal. The statistical tools we usually teach our undergraduates are inadequate for analyzing thousands of measurements on tens of samples. The project materials include readings on microarrays as well as computer lab activities. The topics covered include image analysis, filtering and normalization techniques, and …

Yeast Through The Ages: A Statistical Analysis Of Genetic Changes In Aging Yeast, Alison Wise '05, Johanna S. Hardin, Laura Hoopes
Pomona Faculty Publications and Research
Microarray technology allows for the expression levels of thousands of genes in a cell to be measured simultaneously. The technology provides great potential in the fields of biology and medicine, as the analysis of data obtained from microarray experiments gives insight into the roles of specific genes and the associated changes across experimental conditions (e.g., aging, mutation, radiation therapy, drug dosage). The application of statistical tools to microarray data can help make sense of the experiment and thereby advance genetic, biological, and medical research. Likewise, microarrays provide an exciting means through which to explore statistical techniques.

A systematic review of randomized clinical trials (RCT) was undertaken to evaluate the beneficial and harmful effects of immunosuppression with cyclosporin versus tacrolimus for liver transplanted patients. MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Central and Hepato-Biliary Group Controlled Trials Registers were searched. Using fixed and random effects model, relative risk (RR), values <1 favoring>tacrolimus, with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated. Of 717 potentially relevant references, 16 RCTs were eligible for inclusion. Mortality and graft loss at 1 year were significantly reduced in tacrolimus-treated recipients (Death: RR 0.85, 95% CI 0.73-0.99; graft loss: RR 0.73, 95% CI 0.61-0.86). Tacrolimus reduced the number of recipients …1>

Temperature dependent Hall effect (TDH), low temperature photoluminescence (LTPL), secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), optical admittance spectroscopy (OAS), and thermally stimulated current (TSC) measurements have been made on 6H-SiC grown by the physical vapor transport technique without intentional doping. n- and p-type as well semi-insulating samples were studied to explore the compensation mechanism in semi-insulating high purity SiC. Nitrogen and boron were found from TDH and SIMS measurements to be the dominant impurities that must be compensated to produce semi-insulating properties. The electrical activation energy of the semi-insulating sample determined from the dependence of the resistivity …

Ecstasy has gained popularity among young adults who frequent raves and nightclubs. The Drug Enforcement Administration reported a 500 percent increase in the use of ecstasy between 1993 and 1998. The number of ecstasy users kept growing until 2002, years after a national public education initiative against ecstasy use was launched. In this study, a system of differential equations is used to model the peer-driven dynamics of ecstasy use. It is found that backward bifurcations describe situations when sufficient peer pressure can cause an epidemic of ecstasy use. Furthermore, factors that have the greatest influence on ecstasy use as predicted …

The Ironman triathlon was created in 1978 by combining events with the longest distances for races then contested in Hawaii in swimming, cycling, and running. The Half Ironman triathlon was formed using half the distances of each of the events in the Ironman. The Olympic distance triathlon was created by combining events with the longest distances for races sanctioned by the major federations for swimming, cycling, and running. The relative importance of each event in overall race outcome was not given consideration when determining the distances of each of the races in modern triathlons. Thus, there is a general belief …
Analysis And Applications Of Autoregressive Moving Average Models With Stochastic Variance, Shelton Peiris, Ramprasad Bhar, David E. Allen
Analysis And Applications Of Autoregressive Moving Average Models With Stochastic Variance, Shelton Peiris, Ramprasad Bhar, David E. Allen
Research outputs pre 2011
It is known that volatility plays a central role in financial modelling problems. This paper studies, in detail, a class of discrete time stochastic volatility (SV) models driven by ARMA models with innovations having a stochastic variances. The auto- correlation function of this class of models is derived and methods of identification of such processes are described. An example is added to illustrate the development of the theory over the standard methods.
Existence Of Optimal Controls For Singular Control Problems With State Constraints, Amarjit Budhiraja, Kevin Ross
Existence Of Optimal Controls For Singular Control Problems With State Constraints, Amarjit Budhiraja, Kevin Ross
Statistics
We establish the existence of an optimal control for a general class of singular control problems with state constraints. The proof uses weak convergence arguments and a time rescaling technique. The existence of optimal controls for Brownian control problems, associated with a broad family of stochastic networks, follows as a consequence.

The Stable Manifold Theorem For Semilinear Stochastic Evolution Equations And Stochastic Partial Differential Equations, Salah-Eldin A. Mohammed, Tusheng Zhang, Huaizhong Zhao
Articles and Preprints
The main objective of this paper is to characterize the pathwise local structure of solutions of semilinear stochastic evolution equations (see’s) and stochastic partial differential equations (spde’s) near stationary solutions. Such characterization is realized through the long-term behavior of the solution field near stationary points. The analysis falls in two parts 1, 2.
In Part 1, we prove general existence and compactness theorems for Ck-cocycles of semilinear see’s and spde’s. Our results cover a large class of semilinear see’s as well as certain semilinear spde’s with Lipschitz and non-Lipschitz terms such as stochastic reaction diffusion equations and the …
Reliability Modeling In Spatially Distributed Logistics System, Ni Wang, Jye-Chyi Lu, Paul H. Kvam
Reliability Modeling In Spatially Distributed Logistics System, Ni Wang, Jye-Chyi Lu, Paul H. Kvam
Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications
This article proposes methods for modeling service reliability in a supply chain. The logistics system in a supply chain typically consists of thousands of retail stores along with multiple distribution centers (DC). Products are transported between DC & stores through multiple routes. The service reliability depends on DC location layouts, distances from DC to stores, time requirements for product replenishing at stores, DC's capability for supporting store demands, and the connectivity of transportation routes. Contingent events such as labor disputes, bad weather, road conditions, traffic situations, and even terrorist threats can have great impacts on a system's reliability. Given the …

Each year, more than $3 billion is wagered on the NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament. Most of that money is wagered in pools where the object is to correctly predict winners of each game, with emphasis on the last four teams remaining (the Final Four). In this paper, we present a combined logistic regression/Markov chain model for predicting the outcome of NCAA tournament games given only basic input data. Over the past 6 years, our model has been significantly more successful than the other common methods such as tournament seedings, the AP and ESPN/USA Today polls, the RPI, and …

Statistical Reliability With Applications, Paul H. Kvam, Jye-Chyi Lu
Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications
This chapter reviews fundamental ideas in reliability theory and inference. The first part of the chapter accounts for lifetime distributions that are used in engineering reliability analyis, including general properties of reliability distributions that pertain to lifetime for manufactured products. Certain distributions are formulated on the basis of simple physical properties, and other are more or less empirical. The first part of the chapter ends with a description of graphical and analytical methods to find appropriate lifetime distributions for a set of failure data.
The second part of the chapter describes statistical methods for analyzing reliability data, including maximum likelihood …

Specific Antibodies To Recombinant Allergens Of Aspergillus Fumigatus In Cystic Fibrosis Patients With Abpa, Viswanath P. Kurup, Alan P. Knutsen, Richard B. Moss, Naveen K. Bansal
Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
Background
Aspergillus fumigatus, a widely distributed fungus, has been implicated in causing life threatening infections as well as severe asthma and allergic diseases in man. Allergic affliction like allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) is a disabling lung disease frequently seen in patients with asthma and cystic fibrosis. Immunodiagnosis of the former is comparatively easier due to the availability of purified antigens and sensitive methods. However, this is not true with cystic fibrosis patients where the prevalence of ABPA is fairly high and the morbidity and mortality are significant.
Methods
In the present study, we have evaluated purified recombinant allergens from …
The Chang-Los-Suszko Theorem In A Topological Setting, Paul Bankston
The Chang-Los-Suszko Theorem In A Topological Setting, Paul Bankston
Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
The Chang-Łoś-Suszko theorem of first-order model theory characterizes universal-existential classes of models as just those elementary classes that are closed under unions of chains. This theorem can then be used to equate two model-theoretic closure conditions for elementary classes; namely unions of chains and existential substructures. In the present paper we prove a topological analogue and indicate some applications.

Assessing The Ssrn-Based Law School Rankings, Theodore Eisenberg
Cornell Law Faculty Publications
One noteworthy feature of the SSRN-based rankings is the high correlation between them and other rankings. Black and Caron report correlation coefficients between their two Social Science Research Network (SSRN) school rankings (one based on downloads from SSRN and one based on the number of papers posted on SSRN) and six other published rankings. The correlations provide a useful and creative measure of consistency across studies. If ranking studies are highly correlated, then the least expensive and most efficient study to conduct can be used without incurring the expense and delay of the more labor-intensive ranking methods. SSRN has a …

Modeling And Characterizations Of New Notions In Life Testing With Statistical Applications, Mohammad Sepehrifar
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Knowing the class to which a life distribution belongs gives us an idea about the aging of the device or system the life distribution represents, and enables us to compare the aging properties of different systems. This research intends to establish several new nonparametric classes of life distributions defined by the concept of inactivity time of a unit with a guaranteed minimum life length. These classes play an important role in the study of reliability theory, survival analysis, maintenance policies, economics, actuarial sciences and many other applied areas.
Statistical Methods And Experimental Design For Inference Regarding Dose And/Or Interaction Thresholds Along A Fixed-Ratio Ray, Sharon Dziuba Yeatts
Statistical Methods And Experimental Design For Inference Regarding Dose And/Or Interaction Thresholds Along A Fixed-Ratio Ray, Sharon Dziuba Yeatts
Theses and Dissertations
An alternative to the full factorial design, the ray design is appropriate for investigating a mixture of c chemicals, which are present according to a fixed mixing ratio, called the mixture ray. Using single chemical and mixture ray data, we can investigate interaction among the chemicals in a particular mixture. Statistical models have been used to describe the dose-response relationship of the single agents and the mixture; additivity is tested through the significance of model parameters associated with the coincidence of the additivity and mixture models. It is often assumed that a chemical or mixture must be administered above an unknown …
A Normal-Mixture Model With Random-Effects For Rr-Interval Data, Jessica Mckinney Ketchum
A Normal-Mixture Model With Random-Effects For Rr-Interval Data, Jessica Mckinney Ketchum
Theses and Dissertations
In many applications of random-effects models to longitudinal data, such as heart rate variability (HRV) data, a normal-mixture distribution seems to be more appropriate than the normal distribution assumption. While the random-effects methodology is well developed for several distributions in the exponential family, the case of the normal-mixture has not been dealt with adequately in the literature. The models and the estimation methods that have been proposed in the past assume the conditional model (fixing the random-effects) to be normal and allow a mixture distribution for the random effects (Xu and Hedeker, 2001, Xu, 1995). The methods proposed in this …

Meta-Analysis Of Open Vs Closed Surgery Of Mandibular Condyle Fractures, Marcy Lauren Nussbaum
Theses and Dissertations
A review of the literature reveals a difference of opinion regarding whether open or closed reduction of condylar fractures produces the best results. It would be beneficial to critically analyze past studies that have directly compared the two methods in an attempt to answer this question. A Medline search for articles using the key words 'mandibular condyle fractures' and 'mandibular condyle fractures surgery' was performed. The articles chosen for the meta-analysis contained data on at least one of the following: postoperative maximum mouth opening, lateral excursion, protrusion, deviation on opening, asymmetry, and joint pain or muscle pain. Several common statistical …
Quantifying The Effects Of Correlated Covariates On Variable Importance Estimates From Random Forests, Ryan Vincent Kimes
Quantifying The Effects Of Correlated Covariates On Variable Importance Estimates From Random Forests, Ryan Vincent Kimes
Theses and Dissertations
Recent advances in computing technology have lead to the development of algorithmic modeling techniques. These methods can be used to analyze data which are difficult to analyze using traditional statistical models. This study examined the effectiveness of variable importance estimates from the random forest algorithm in identifying the true predictor among a large number of candidate predictors. A simulation study was conducted using twenty different levels of association among the independent variables and seven different levels of association between the true predictor and the response. We conclude that the random forest method is an effective classification tool when the goals …
