[Review Of] Randall Bennett Woods, A Black Odyssey: John Lewis Waller And The Promise Of American Life, 1 878-1900, Herbert Aptheker Jan 1983

[Review Of] Randall Bennett Woods, A Black Odyssey: John Lewis Waller And The Promise Of American Life, 1 878-1900, Herbert Aptheker

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

This book, whose author is an associate professor at the University of Arkansas, is an important contribution to Afro-American and diplomatic history. Its subject was, as the author notes, a "second echelon member of the national Negro leadership" at the turn of the nineteenth century . Mature biographies of such figures are few but are vital if the contours of black history are to be filled.

[Review Of] Tom Miller, On The Border, Robert Gish Jan 1983

[Review Of] Tom Miller, On The Border, Robert Gish

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Tom Miller's On The Border is a disarmingly straightforward book. At first glance it seems to be a simple travelog-the account of his journey at the dawn of the decade in a 1968 Valiant, accompanied by a photographer companion, Norah Booth, along the entire distance of the United States/Mexico border from Brownsville and Matamoros to Chula Vista and Tijuana. The only photographs in the book, however, are verbal ones.

[Review Of] Jimmie Lewis Franklin, Journey Toward Hope: A History Of Blacks In Oklahoma, Charles C. Irby Jan 1983

[Review Of] Jimmie Lewis Franklin, Journey Toward Hope: A History Of Blacks In Oklahoma, Charles C. Irby

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Journey Toward Hope is a welcome volume on blacks west of the Mississippi. The author has effectively demonstrated how Oklahoma's geography, between the West and the South, was responsible for its segregated development; white Oklahomans chose the racial customs, policies, and institutions of the Deep South to “keep Blacks in their place."

[Review Of] James Diego Vigil, From Indians To Chicanos: A Sociocultural History, Homer D.C. Garcia Jan 1983

[Review Of] James Diego Vigil, From Indians To Chicanos: A Sociocultural History, Homer D.C. Garcia

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Historians are typically satisfied with pinpointing dates and describing associated events while minimizing speculation and interpretations which cannot be directly supported with evidence. There is no question that this is a vital and popular methodological approach, and Chicano studies historians have usually complied with this norm--until now.

Jens Kjar: From Horsens To Atlantic, Signe Nielsen Betsinger

The Bridge

Of course things are coming back. Maybe not today or tomorrow, but eventually. Prosperity always has followed depression." 1 These encouraging words were spoken by Jens Kjar in Atlantic, Iowa, over twenty-five years ago to a newspaper reporter who was as intrigued by this man as I am. Who was Jens Kjar? How did I come to know about him? And why do I write about him today?

La Coopérative De Markala: Une Nouvelle Approche Des Rôles Economiques Traditionnaux, Susan Daughman, Mariam N'Diaye Thiam Jan 1983

La Coopérative De Markala: Une Nouvelle Approche Des Rôles Economiques Traditionnaux, Susan Daughman, Mariam N'Diaye Thiam

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

The Working Women's Forum: Organizing For Credit And Change, Marty Chen

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

This issue of SEEDs tells the story of how the Working Women's Forum came into being in Madras, India and how it has brought together more than 13,000 poor, urban women around the issue of credit. It also describes how the Forum has not only provided its members with access to funds, but has expanded to include support services such as child care, education, health, and family planning and how the sense of strength and purpose that has grown up among the members is helping them to tackle the political and social problems that affect their lives.

Mujeres Y Artesanías: Mito Y Realidad, Jasleen Dhamija Jan 1983

Mujeres Y Artesanías: Mito Y Realidad, Jasleen Dhamija

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Hanover Street: Un Experimento De Capacitacion Femenina En Soladadura Y Carpinteria, Peggy Antrobus, Barbara Rogers

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

The Experience Of Migration And Selected Perceptions Of Older Residents Of The Waterloo Black Community, Jacqueline Elizabeth Ellis Jan 1983

The Experience Of Migration And Selected Perceptions Of Older Residents Of The Waterloo Black Community, Jacqueline Elizabeth Ellis

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This thesis deals with the experience of migration during the formative years of the Black community of Waterloo, Iowa and perceptions of the quality of life from 1910-1970. This exploratory study is based on survey data and folk/oral history derived fr001 a selected sample of men and women, age 50-90 years, of the Black community of Waterloo. The early history of American Blacks has been grossly neglected by historians and others and, as a result, sources of documented information are limited. Because of this, it is important that existing information be preserved. It is this author's hope that survey data …

Towards The Holocaust: The Social And Economic Collapse Of The Weimar Republic, Michael N. Dobkowski, Isidor Wallimann Jan 1983

Towards The Holocaust: The Social And Economic Collapse Of The Weimar Republic, Michael N. Dobkowski, Isidor Wallimann

Books

The social system of Weimar Germany has always been controversial. From the start 1Weimar society was characterized by a peculiar fluidity: between 1913 and 1933, the German Reich, commonly referred to as the Weimar Republic, was a virtual laboratory of sociocultural experimentation. In the streets of German towns and cities, political armies competed for followers--a process punctuated by assassinations and advertised by street battles embroiling monarchists, imperial militarists, nihilistic war veterans, Communists, Socialists, anarchists, and National Socialists. Parliamentary activity involved about twenty-five political parties whose shifting alliances produced twenty governmental cabinets with an average lifespan of less than nine months.

The Relative Contribution To Meaning Of Verbal And Nonverbal Channels Of Communication: A Meta-Analysis, Jeffrey S. Philpott Jan 1983

The Relative Contribution To Meaning Of Verbal And Nonverbal Channels Of Communication: A Meta-Analysis, Jeffrey S. Philpott

Department of Communication Studies: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The current study is grounded in the psychological approaches to the mechanics of communication, somewhere between cybernetics and attribution.

The integration of information available in different channels is the focus of the present study. To what extent do people rely on the different channels of communication to assign meaning to their world? More specifically, what is the relative importance of the verbal and nonverbal channels of communication in the meaning creation process?

This question of channel reliance is of central import to the study of the role of information in social/psychological systems. If it can be assumed that meaning is …
