The purpose in writing this ethnohistory was not to prove that the tribes in Maine, New Hampshire and New Brunswick were unified, but rather, to illustrate the extent to which they were unified. With this general end in mind, my research therefore could not follow only one line of inquiry. It had to be divided into various sub-topics to cover my various orientations to the problem. One of my first orientations was that of validating my belief in a former unity through fieldwork among the Indians involved. This orientation provided the basis for my first chapter, which was considerably augmented …

The federal government is not the only agency which chooses to fight aggressively the destructive forces at work in the poverty pockets of our cities. In Kansas City, Faith Lutheran Church had long been serving the Northeast Neighborhood in its direct and straightforward way when, in July of 1965, the newly-created Office of Economic Opportunity decided, upon petition by the church, to devote a portion of its funds to this predominantly Negro, lower-income area of the city. The object of this paper was to explore the relationships that exist between ideas and other elements of the social systems of primitive peoples. Taking a clue from sociologists of knowledge, who are especially concerned with the problem of ideology, I began my exploration of primitive thought by searching for primitive ideology. An ideology might be defined as a conscious deliberate attempt by one group of people to take advantage of another group by the manipulation of ideas. It soon became apparent that primitives had nothing comparable to ideology in this sense, save for perhaps the Aztecs. The question then …

This Pamphlet gives annotated bibliography of culture change for the Teton Dakota Indians. The introduction of this paper is devoted to the attitudes of the Oglalas toward their ceremonies. The author describes a gift-giving ceremony on the Pine Ridge reservation. This bulletin surveys the history of the Dakotas and their establishment on reservations.
