Community Development: Youth Programming In A Model Neighborhood In Peoria, Illinois, Ann Flesor Henby

The purpose of this study was to develop and implement a youth program in a minority "model neighborhood" area located in a low-income tract in Peoria, Illinois. There were approximately forty youth served from June through November, 1980. A journal was kept during this time, reflecting the interaction among the youth coordinator, the youth and their parents, and the staff of the agency, Common Place. The journal revealed the process of developing and implementing program in Common Place's "model neighborhood". Results of the program were compared to previous research on youth programs and others' personal working experiences in a minority …

"No insurance company can write insurance on burning buildings and stay in business very long."

The burning buildings in this case are severely handicapped children, and the insurance company is the Lutheran Church in America's Board of Pensions.

Dr. Edwin Wang used this analogy to explain the LCA's decision, beginning in 1976, to deny health and pension plan coverage to children adopted by LCA professional church workers-if those children have pre-existing severe handicaps. Any severely handicapped person who wants to enter the ministry in the LCA would also be ineligible for health and pension coverage.

It is a truism that resources devoted to defense are unavailable for nondefense purposes. Investment in defense takes place partly by reducing civilian spending on consumer and capital goods through tax rates that are higher than they would otherwise be and partly by reducing government spending on non-defense programs. The purpose of this paper is to test for the existence and magnitude of the latter tradeoff over the years 1929-1971 in the United States. In particular, the analysis concerns the tradeoff between defense and three social welfare policies: health, public aid and housing. In addition, the analysis examines whether these …

Under a variety of labels, many academic disciplines focus on the unsettling impact of fresh and vivid interpersonal experiences upon pre-existing beliefs and behaviour patterns. Reference is to philosophical discussions of sophism and humanism, historical theories about frontier influences, anthropological interest in culture shock, psychiatric concern with empathy and with perceptive listening, and sociological analyses of marginality, uses of participant observation and life-history data, and clinical studies of social behavior. A Conference on the Vietnamese: Their Presence Among Us, held June 28 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, initially was planned by the Los Angeles LHRA and Lutheran Social Services. Co-sponsors included the Asian Studies Program of California State University at Long Beach and the Long Beach Campus Ministry.

Comparison Of Two Minorities: New Zealand Maoris And Australian Aborigines, Janet Noel Regan

The most obvious contrast between these two minorities is their relative size; the Maoris represent 10% of the total population of New Zealand while the Aborigines, account for .6% of the total Australian population. These figures are significant: in that they influence the power and resources available to both minorities in their struggles against the dominant majorities. The Maoris are at an advantage because their size is more impressive.

The impact of European contact on the original Maori and Aboriginal cultures points to many similarities and several basic differences. The cultures of both societies, as detailed earlier, had developed into …

The Social Psychology Of Small Groups: Relevancy Of Social Work Practice With Groups, Martha E. Gentry

Inclusion from the social sciences to broaden the knowledge base of social work is an accepted fact. In the professions' experience with group practice such reliance is not new, and extends at least to the efforts of Coyle who saw the usefulness of the small group field in social psychology as early as 1930. More recently, Hartford's book provides a text which bridges small group theory and social work practice with groups. An examination of diverse conceptualizations of group practice reveals differential reliance upon small group findings.

Toward Partisan Politics In A Professional Association: Utility Of The Candidates Poll, L. K. Northwood, Howard Crockett

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The purpose of this paper is to describe the initial efforts of one local chapter, The Puget Sound Chapter; to engage in partisan politics by the conduct of a poll of candidates for election to the Washington State Legislature in 1974. Properly speaking, the Chapter endorsed no candidates, merely rated them from "weak" to "outstanding" on their agreement with NASW policies on relevant programs and their social welfare attitudes. Thus, it is a mild form of partisan politics that will be considered.
