In late 1872 and early 1873 the lava beds along northern California's Tule Lake became an arena of conflict between 160-odd Modoc Indians and a thousand U.S. soldiers, civilians, and their Warm Springs Apache scouts. Thread-bare clothing, a lack of water, internecine friction, and a general demoralization ultimately forced those Modocs to surrender, but not before they had inflicted great damage on the pursuing military. Keith Murray's account of the Modoc War is a quick-moving, dynamic, highly detailed narrative which reads like an action-novel. It is an intricately researched chronicle of events and includes actual conversation from participants on both …

The sub-title of this enigmatic book is "A Study of the Influence of Marxism on African Writing." The first of the two parts of the books deals primarily with definitions of Marxist aesthetics. For a serious work, not only are the cliches and terminology tiresome but the choice of quotations is unfortunate. Ngara quotes Marx's and Engel's opinion that Dickens, Thackeray, Emily Bronte and Gaskell wrote novels "whose graphic and eloquent pages have issued to the world more political and social truths than have been uttered by all the professional politicians, publicists and moralists put together." New England Journal of Public Policy

This essay scrutinizes the book by J. Anthony Lukas, Common Ground: A Turbulent Decade in the Lives of Three American Families, to assess whether it presents a valid and reliable account of the issues, people, and events it chronicles. The substantive core of the book is shown to be the politics of Boston public school desegregation. The parts played by the three families in this event are dramatically portrayed but cannot be corroborated and are not interpreted. The parts played by five major policy leaders, when tested against other evidence, are found to be distorted, questionable legends woven in …

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This paper presents an overview of the features of crime and the criminal justice system in the United States. It notes the great disparities in use of five systems of justice. It discusses the amount and variety of corporate crime, political crime, street crime, white collar crime as well as organized crime. It emphasizes the inadequacy of current theories of crime in so far as corporate, white collar and political crime are concerned. The author argues that social justice is a far better way to prevent crime than are criminal justice systems and points to other societies with low crime …

Published in 1968, reprinted in 1974, and a third printing in 1984, this volume contains a collection of 112 superb photographs, mostly by William S. Soule. Born in Maine in 1836, he was wounded in the Civil War and in 1865 entered the photography business, but sold this to become chief clerk in the sutler store operated by John Tappan at Fort Dodge (Kansas), where he resumed his photographic activity during off-duty hours. Soule probably made most of his photographs of Cheyennes and Araphoes [Arapahos] at Fort Dodge, some others at Camp Supply and Fort Sill (Indian Territory). All of …

The Bridge

This article is not, strictly speaking, Danish American in content. However, Greenland has long been a concern of the United States. Secretary of State Seward who purchased Alaska from the Russians in 1867 gave some serious thought to the acquisition of Greenland also. Since the early days of World War 11, United States troops have been stationed in Greenland as part of our strategic defense system. The Danish American Heritage Society has always taken a broad view of what is Danish American, and we believe this article fits into that broad view.

The poem prefaces Leslie Marmon Silko's novel Ceremony, the story of a young American Indian who regains the wholeness and meaning of his life by rediscovering his ancient tribal roots and rituals.[1] It is a story of the American Southwest, especially the Pueblo-Laguna people. Anyone even vaguely familiar with American Indian culture knows that the groups were originally as different from each other as modern-day Swedes are from Albanians or Catalans, if not more so.
