The Punishment Of Divorced Mothers, Herman Borenzweig

As the clinical social worker to seven young divorced mothers I began to wonder why the lives of these women had become so remarkably unbearable. I compared the experiences of the women who were coming to me for group psychotherapy with about thirty similar divorced mothers who were also members of the West Side Jewish Community Center of Los Angeles. All the women were experiencing similar difficulties. I also explored some of the literature about the problems faced by divorced mothers! This essay is the culmination of my research. Introduction

This paper examines the topic of nutrition education for the elderly. Only within the past decade has proper nutrition been recognized as making a major contribution to the health and well-being of the elderly. This recognition of the importance of nutrition in the later years has led to the recent establishment of many nutrition programs for the elderly. As nutrition education is seen as an important tool in improving the nutritional status of the elderly, many of these now programs include nutrition education components.

The concept of role exit presented by Zena Smith Blau in her book, Old Age in a Changing Society, refers to the ongoing process of relinquishing previously enacted social roles; a process which is part of everyday life for men and women of all ages. However, Blau argues that role exits in later life are different from those in earlier stages of the life cycle because they tend to be terminal and involuntary. These factors, according to Blau, cause role exits in old age to negatively influence the individual's overall satisfaction with life.

Biological Theories Of Aging, Cindy Foote

Student Scholarship

The study of aging has historically transitioned from ancient folklore and mythical elixirs to the rigorous scientific discipline of gerontology. Throughout history, humans have attempted to recapture youth through practices ranging from the consumption of gladiator blood to the use of testicular extracts, though modern science has only recently begun to categorize these efforts into verifiable hypotheses. Gerontology defines true biological aging, or senescence, through four specific criteria: universality, intrinsicality, progressiveness, and deleteriousness. These benchmarks ensure that an age-associated change is a fundamental part of the biological process rather than a result of disease or environmental factors.

Leave-Taking Behavior Between Preschool Children And Their Parents, Elizabeth Y. Aoki

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Behavior of 84 parent-child dyads engaged in separation in preschool settings are presented. A factor analysis and correlation matrix revealed patterns of child-parent-teacher interaction, child-parent tactile-affiliative behavior, and child dependency-attachment behavior. The main pattern showed high parent-teacher gazing, smiling, and approaching interaction and high teacher smiling and gazing activity toward the child. A teacher-mediator theory in which the teacher's presence is important as an anxiety-lessening factor in child-parent leave-taking behavior is suggested and discussed to both interpret the findings and for further leave-taking research.

Children in our society pass through a prolonged period of dependency during which they are taught the complex technological and social skills necessary for successful adult functioning. The child's experiences during this period can have profound effects on the development of his potential for meaningful interpersonal relationships, competency, and creativity. The child's dependence needs are the complement of the caretaker's nurturance. When nurturance fails or is inconsistent, societal loss merges with individual tragedy. Black people, like other people, grow up in families. This simple observation is a suprise to people who are accustomed to associate the experiences of Black people with slavery, crime, delinquency, civil disorders. The Black historian, Benjamin Quarles (1967) has observed that white America tends to have a distorted perspective on Black life, and the fact of Blacks growing up in a family is a fresh approach to the understanding of socio-cultural aspects of growing up Black (cf.
