Conserving Hawaiian Natural Resources: A Geography Field Trip Experience, Gary A. Klee

Faculty Publications, Environmental Studies

For several years San Diego State University's Geography Department has offered a three-unit field course to the island of Kauai, Hawaii. The course surveys the nature and extent of mineral, soil, water, grassland, forest, wildlife, and marine resources on the island, as well as Kauai's conservation management practices. Aside from studying island ecosystems, what is strikingly different about this trip is its strong reliance upon local talent for the actual field teaching and its alliance with an on-campus association for the non-academic portion of the field experience.

It is also designed to serve as a guideline for future handbooks at the center and for other agencies which may require such a handbook. This handbook should eliminate any confusion concerning regulations and policy of the center and prove to be satisfactory replacement for single sheet information which was formerly used.

This pilot study was developed to teach people with mental retardation about their own sexuality, appropriate community behaviors, and to develop within them a basic sense of responsibility for their own actions. Problems in social/sexual behaviors have been consistently quoted as reasons for high recidivism rates, as well as difficulties in community living, vocational placement, and other generalized stereotypes about mental retardation. Often the public remains uninformed about, does not recognize, and/or feels that sexual rights for people with any mental differences should not exist. George Herbert Mead And Social Reform: His Work And Writings, Mary Jo Deegan, John S. Burger

There are two popular myths concerning the eminent philosopher and social psychologist George Herbert Mead: that he published little during his lifetime and that Mind, Self, and Society is his most important sociological work. This misrepresentation of Mead's contributions is partially grounded in the neglect of his work and writings on social reform. The misrepresentation of the significance of the almost seventy articles Mead wrote during his lifetime distorts the meaning of his concepts and has profound implications for symbolic interactionists who claim Mead as one of their founding fathers.

Problem. In a changing society, organizations must innovate. To achieve productive change it is necessary that the organizational climate and its effect upon organizational personnel be understood. In the field of human resource management there is always a need for insights into psychological climate in order for organizational initiative and creativity to operate. It was the purpose of the present study to construct a patterned profile of how Seventh-day Adventist leading church members in Canada perceive the organizational climate, and to analyze the findings in relationship to creativity.

Social Experience And Moral Judgment In East African Young Adults, Carolyn P. Edwards

Relationships between stage of moral judgment and antecedent social experiences are presented for a non-Western sample of young adults. Crosssectional data are presented for two groups of Kenyan students: 52 University of Nairobi students; and 40 fourth form secondary school Ss. Critical variables are (a) family modernization, (b) attending ethnically pluralistic secondary schools, and (c) living independently away from home. The correlations between moral judgment stage and these three variables are controlled for, and compared to, correlations between stage of moral judgment and age, sex, race, and academic ability (as measured by standardized achievement tests or by grades). The Structure Of Relevance And Marxian Sociology Of Knowledge: An Analysis Of Hegemony And Voluntary Associations, Larry R. Irons

This thesis examines the hegemonic function of symbolic structures of relevance as they are related to phenomenological commitments to social change held by voluntary associations of homosexuals. The data base of this investigation consists of the literature of 21 homophile organizations.

Organizations literature is used to facilitate a theoretical adaptation of Alfred Schutz’ discussion of relevance structures which addresses he hegemonic organization of voluntary associations.
