Explorations in Ethnic Studies

The article is well written and researched. The author has searched the literature pertaining to blacks and Indians and found that there are many cases of confused and deliberate distortions. These distortions had and have a profound impact on the way we behave. Many examples of the use of overgeneralization are given. The reasons for this behavior are complex and varied. As an example we find the white Virginians agitating for the termination of the Gingaskin Indian Reservation in Northampton County. Recent works by students of contemporary ritual (or "ritologists," as Ronald Grimes calls them) supports the notion that ritual is an important variable not just in tribal culture but also in modern industrial culture. I'm referring to studies that have been undertaken by such ardent ritual exegetes as Roy Rappaport, Barbara Myerhoff, Ronald Grimes, Robert Bocock, Sally Falk Moore, and Richard Schechner. Grimes has begun the important work of consolidating research on ritual; he has taken a field of scholarship which was doggedly parochial and helped to expand it into a protoscience of its own. This article describes the uses of sociological theory and knowledge in the design and operation of an in-hospital program for the care of physically ill and injured adolescents. The central tasks of adolescence — resolution of the conflict between autonomy and dependency, the development of intimacy and competence, the ability to take on adult roles, and the development of the self — may be hampered by a total institution which depersonalizes patients and fosters dependency. The development of normative structures which encourage autonomy, continuity of role evelopment, appropriate levels of intimacy, and continued development of the self are encouraged by …

Foster Parent Training Program: Evaluation Report 1983-1984, Carole Davis

Publications

Over the past two years, the Foster Parent Training project, in close cooperation with the Department of Social Services, has been successful in training over 1,000 foster parents and caseworkers in the Basic and Adolescent curricula. A statewide network capable of providing on-going support to local foster parents has been developed. In addition to the 16 regional trainers, over 55 local people interested in foster care have participated as co-trainers. The involvement of other local resource people such as judges, counselors, caseworkers, and attorneys has increased the number involved in training even more. Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this study was to examine the relative contribution of socioeconomic status and student perceptions of school effectiveness to academic achievement in engineering students. The variables representing the general factor of socioeconomic status were 1) father’s occupation, 2) father’s schooling, 3) mother’s schooling, 4) family income, and 5) family’s community population. The variables representing student perceptions of school effectiveness were: 1) help seeking factor, 2) professional preparation factor, 3) experience factor, 4) outside classroom activity factor, 5) personal encouragement factor, and 6) delivery factor.

Birth-Order Complementarity And Marital Adjustment, Cornelia Vos

It was predicted that the level of complementarity of birth-order position is positively associated with marital adjustment. This hypothesis was developed from Adlerian (1959) theory about the effects of birth-order position on personality formation and from the Toman (1961) duplication theorem. The Spanier Dyadic Adjustment Scale (1976) was given to 327 married women. An analysis of variance revealed no significant differences between the various combinations of birth order (no data were available for the only-with-only combination due to insufficient number of subjects in this group). Correspondingly, level of complementarity of birth order was also found to be unassociated with marital …

The Creationist Movement: Science, Religion And Ideology, George M. Bevins

A sample of literature produced by participants in the "creationist movement" is examined in an effort to delineate the ideology of the movement. This ideology is seen as a repertoire of images of science, evolution and society which is used by creationists in their efforts to propagate their movement. Based on this literature, an "ideological substructure of belief" within the creationist movement is described, consisting of their belief in a created normative order in the world and of their fear that this order is breaking down.
