Clinical Sociology Review

Social problem as affliction and social problem as hazard represent two related but differing foci of sociological concern and intervention. Social problem as affliction refers to the personal problem which is largely social in nature. Intervention is concerned with helping the afflicted person with his or her problem. Social problem as hazard refers to the collective social problem posed by a social condition responsible for increased likelihood of personal problems and ills. Intervention is concerned with dealing with the collective problem.

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Lewis's article presents a creative and exciting approach for understanding the importance elderly people have not only in the family but in the community as well. He blends literary personification, cultural integration, and social science strategies for illustrating Chicano traditions and their relationships to the aging process. Literary works involving curandero/curandera and abuelo/abuela folk traditions depict reverance [reverence], honor, power, and prestige as engaging qualities inherited by the elderly. Lewis's analysis of Anaya's Bless Me Ultima and Santiago's Famous All Over Town illustrate the congruence folk traditions have with the positive aspects of the aging process. Art serves the societal functions of recording, interpreting and predicting. Here, analysis of popular archetypes in Chicano fiction and poetry are used to illustrate cultural values toward the elderly and conflicts of values between generations of Chicanos. This leads to an examination of how Chicano values differ from Anglo-American values toward the elderly. The author demonstrates the problems of acculturation, blending into and enriching another culture while retaining a sense of one's own culture, versus assimilation, abandoning one's own heritage and taking on the values of another culture. Ethnicity and Human Rights in Canada is a sequel to Kallen's The Anatomy of Racism: Canadian Dimensions. Whereas her earlier work sought to clarify the concepts of race and ethnicity as they applied to a neutral, if not tolerant, nation, the social context of the current work is less benign. Factors implicated in the shift to more contentious racial and ethnic relations include a struggling national economy, separatist moves in Quebec and the West, a rapidly expanding non White immigration, and advancement of natural resource claims by aboriginal groups at a time when federal pressure for energy development in the …

This study investigated age- and sex-specific death rates in South Dakota Counties among the population 65 and over in 1960, 1970 and 1980. Census Bureau and Vital Statistic data were employed to answer the basic question of how death rates and quality of life factors were related. Quality of life factors included; economics, urbanization, health technology, and education, which were operationalized at the county level. A description of county quality of life factors and age- and sex-specific death rates for males and females was presented. Using Richard Emerson's exchange network analysis, exchange relations in the South Dakota 4-H program were examined. South Dakota 4-H is comprised of both paid staff and volunteer leaders. It is currently undergoing structural change through the implementation of the Key Leader System. The Key Leader System involves appointing county level Key Leaders and club level Project Leaders to disseminate information to 4-H members and to assist them with their projects. Survey data, interviews, and State Fair results were collected to test hypotheses generated by exchange network analysis. Both clubs and counties varied in the degree to which they had implemented …

This research has a three-fold purpose: first, to assess the presence, or lack thereof, of alienation in a sample from the rural Farm population; second, to assess the role of the church in helping reduce feelings of alienation; and third, to determine the extent to which church membership and participation enhances personal empowerment and transformative action. Observance of Southeast Asian parents and their preschool children during English as a Second Language (ESL) classes suggests that rethinking commonly held developmental phenomena in psychosocial development may produce insight into Southeast Asian culture and childrearing, middle class American culture and childrearing, and child development in general. Because it meets the needs of parents, the Des Moines Area Community College offers child care with ESL classes for refugees in the Ames, Iowa, area.[1] This article is based on observations from nearly five years of experience in the refugee nursery school with parents and young children. Since the repudiation of the rehabilitation ideal in the mid 1970s a considerable body of literature has developed in which the social purpose and goal of American corrections are debated. While much attention has been given to the policy issues surrounding the various correctional approaches, the author notes that little attention has been paid to the philosophical foundations upon which these perspectives are based. Chapter 1 traces the development of correctional ideology from its beginning to the present crises. The traditional psychoanalytic approach to sexual dysfunctions deemphasizes societal factors as contributing to sexual dysfunctions The new approach to sex therapy, which has developed since 1970, emphasizes a diversity of factors, including societal factors. Sex education—following sex therapy—has now begun to recognize the area of sexual dysfunctions as a valid topic. Knowledge and understanding of the societal factors which directly or indirectly contribute to sexual dysfunctions can help people to change or better react to these factors. The clinical sociologist as a sex educator can and should make a major contribution to the prevention and correction of sexual dysfunctions.

The status and role of women in organized leadership positions in the Protestant church has reflected an American cultural basis for sex-typing the professions. Specifically, the ministry as an occupation has traditionally been thought of as a male occupation. Although the obstacles faced by women are usually justified or explained on doctrinal or theological grounds, it is my thesis that they are better accounted for by reference to secular conditions and status structures. This paper presents a view of democratically rationalized repression as a framework within which to discuss Brigitte Berger and Peter L. Berger's recent anti-feminist, bourgeois apologetic: The War over the Family: Capturing the Middle Ground. The Bergers' book is presented as an example of intellectual violence, a ruthless attempt to legitimate continuing patriarchal dominance through perverted appeals to "democracy" and democratic principles of fairness and consensus.
