Cognitive Disability Theory As A Basis For Activity Analysis For Elderly Persons With Dementia, Deborah S. Kaeser Apr 1992

Cognitive Disability Theory As A Basis For Activity Analysis For Elderly Persons With Dementia, Deborah S. Kaeser

Masters Theses

Allen's (1985) Cognitive Disability approach provides a guideline for modifying the cognitive demands of an activity to match the abilities of an individual. Thirty older adults with a mean age of 78.1 years and a diagnosis indicating an irreversible dementia were selected for the study. A counterbalanced design was used to compare the performance of 15 individuals with a Level Three cognitive ability and 15 individuals with a Level Four cognitive ability on two tiling craft activities: one with Level Three cognitive demands and one with Level Four cognitive demands. Analysis of variance indicated a significant interaction between cognitive level …

The Last Thing We Need Is Another Shelter, Jessica Segré Mar 1992

The Last Thing We Need Is Another Shelter, Jessica Segré

New England Journal of Public Policy

Segre suggests that family homelessness is merely the latest and most devastating example of America's lack of commitment to children and families. The history of human services for children is presented to show that, both at the community and at the policy levels, this population and its needs have been neglected, subjected to fragmentation, and consistently downgraded on our lists of priorities. The societal values that have led to this situation are discussed and revealed as still reflecting an individualistic, frontier outlook, which is, however, becoming an anachronism. The need for a child/family policy is stressed, as is the urgency …

Using Sociology To End Chemical Dependency, J. Barry Gurdin Jan 1992

Using Sociology To End Chemical Dependency, J. Barry Gurdin

Clinical Sociology Review

Drawing on participant observations and interventions while counseling 160 heroin addicts over a two-year period, the author explores the possibilities and limitations of using sociology to counter his clients' addictions to heroin and other drugs. Important historical changes have brought about new conflicting viewpoints within the methadone maintenance clinic, where acupuncture and Chinese herbal treatments are now available alongside Western medicine Although sociologists have written harsh accounts of "getting the treatment," they have tended to support methadone maintenance, which has been demonstrated to stem crime and HIV, among other socially beneficial ends. Clinical sociologists can resocialize addicts to mentally-healthful social …

An Alternative Understanding Of The Cognitive, Emotional, And Behavioral Characteristics Of Individuals Raised In Alcoholic Homes: A Clinical Theory Of The Individual, John E. Glass Jan 1992

An Alternative Understanding Of The Cognitive, Emotional, And Behavioral Characteristics Of Individuals Raised In Alcoholic Homes: A Clinical Theory Of The Individual, John E. Glass

Clinical Sociology Review

Historically, clinical sociology has assessed problematic, individual behavior as reflective of immediate social circumstance and situation. As such, practitioners have primarily targeted situational factors contributing to individual distress as areas of intervention. The following paper, however, views problematic, individual behavior as having social origins, yet targets strategies for intervention not at the interpersonal level, but at the intra-personal level—"within" the individual. The logic behind this argument is found in traditional, well-established sociological theory. An analysis of individuals raised in alcoholic homes will be used to demonstrate this perspective.

Books

Genocide is a modern term whereby groups of people are killed on the basis of their religion, race, ethnicity, or nationality. This book suggest that modernity and the tremendous social differentiation that is a part of our modern world may, in part, be to blame. The authors examine textbook 20th century horrors: from the massacre of the Armenians, to the planned famine in the Ukraine, to the Holocaust, and links of modern warfare to genocide. By studying cases of genocide, the authors hope to inform and connect to all other efforts to understand and to prevent the mass destruction …

Abstracts From The Twentieth Annual Conference, "Ethnicity And Racism In The Americas"

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Early in March participants gathered in Boca Raton, Florida, for the Twentieth Annual Conference of the National Association for Ethnic Studies. The conference theme, "Ethnicity and Racism in the Americas," provided the opportunity to examine perspectives related to the Quincentennial and the encounter among various populations in what is now collectively identified as the "Americas." Presenters discussed the impact of five hundred years of colonialism as well as the experiences of "new" immigrants, many of them from continents other than Europe.

[Review Of] E. Ellis Cashmore. Ed. Dictionary Of Race And Ethnic Relations. 2nd Ed., Alberto Pulido Jan 1992

[Review Of] E. Ellis Cashmore. Ed. Dictionary Of Race And Ethnic Relations. 2nd Ed., Alberto Pulido

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

A recurrent theme in the sociological study of racial and ethnic relations is the discipline's inability to provide a clear and focused research agenda. Scholars in the field are troubled by their inability to agree as to the nature and scope of the discipline, and hence, the lack of an all-encompassing definition for the study of racial and ethnic relations. For example, a continual semantic debate exists over the appropriate usage and application of such concepts as "race" versus "racial" in sociological discourse. The Dictionary of Race and Ethnic Relations has been developed with this concern in mind.

[Review Of] Werner Sollors, Cd. The Invention Of Ethnicity, Hartwig Isernhagen Jan 1992

[Review Of] Werner Sollors, Cd. The Invention Of Ethnicity, Hartwig Isernhagen

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

The Invention of Ethnicity is obviously and admittedly shaped after Hobsbawm's and Ranger's Invention of Tradition, published in 1986, when the essays in this volume were finished. In the meantime, much of what Sollors argues for in his editor's introduction has become accepted knowledge under the general heading of the constructedness of identity and subjectivity. If, however, the book has not, as might appear probable at first sight, been overtaken and made obsolete by the very success of the views it advocates -- if the reverse, rather, seems to be true and to justify a belated discussion in these pages …

A Cross-Cultural Study Of The Collectivism-Individualism Paradigm: The Influence Of Confucian Values On The Conflict-Handling Behavior Of Male Graduate Business Students In Hong Kong And The United States, Randy Ki-Kwan Chiu Jan 1992

A Cross-Cultural Study Of The Collectivism-Individualism Paradigm: The Influence Of Confucian Values On The Conflict-Handling Behavior Of Male Graduate Business Students In Hong Kong And The United States, Randy Ki-Kwan Chiu

Dissertations

Problem. The Collectivism-Individualism literature argues that there is a difference in the way that Americans and the Chinese handle conflict based on differences in culture. It is also speculated that these differences have been influenced by Confucian values. However, these positions have not been conclusively supported by empirical findings.

Method. Both the Chinese Value Survey and Thomas and Kilmann's Management-of-Differences Exercise were administered to 124 U.S. White American graduate business students and 142 Hong Kong Chinese graduate business students. Three null hypotheses were formulated. These hypotheses stated that there is no linear combination of Integration, Human-heartedness, Confucian work dynamism, and …

[Review Of] Shay Youngblood. The Big Mama Stories, Opal Palmer Adisa Jan 1992

[Review Of] Shay Youngblood. The Big Mama Stories, Opal Palmer Adisa

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Shay Youngblood learns how to tell stories from her many Big Mamas. The tales answer questions about her biological mother who is dead, what it means to be a woman, and how it feels to be black in Princeton, Georgia, prior to the civil rights movement. The voices of Big Mama, Miss Emma Lou, Aunt Mae and others leap off the page, and take readers on a journey into homes, on porches, and down the river fishing. Each story is a piece of a puzzle that adds to form a complete picture of the protagonist.

Understanding Paranoia: Toward A Social Explanation, David May, Michael P. Kelly Jan 1992

Understanding Paranoia: Toward A Social Explanation, David May, Michael P. Kelly

Clinical Sociology Review

In this paper we seek to offer an essentially sociological explanation of paranoia by way of a detailed examination of the case of an unmarried, ex-school-teacher who for the past 30 years has clung stubbornly to the belief that she is the victim of an ill-defined group of conspirators with the power to control her thoughts and actions. Taking as our starting point Lemert's seminal 1962 paper, we argue that paranoia is best understood, not as a disease in the accepted medical sense, but rather as a desperate attempt on the part of the sufferer to protect self from the …
