Analysis And Evaluation Of The Workplace Exposure Assessment Workbook Developed By Keith Tait Including Some Recommended Revisions, Lisa Hebberd
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Some risk due to the contamination of workplace environments is an inevitable part of human lives. These risks can often be reduced by improving the control of environmental pollution in the workplace. An extremely important challenge for any industry is to develop a mechanism to identify acceptable levels of safety, or "acceptable risk" in the workplace for specific situations, and to assure adequate quality control over measured or calculated exposure concentrations and their possible contributions to adverse health effects.

"We are living at a time in U.S. cultural history in which the autonomy and dignity of the human spirit is being threatened rather than exercised. What makes it bearable is what is hidden from us, what is repressively desublimated. The current historical juncture is precisely that perilous mixture of historical amnesia and cultural intensity in which society is attempting to reinvent itself without the benefit of knowing who or what it already is."

Family Preservation: A Professional Reform Movement, Marc Mannes
Family Preservation: A Professional Reform Movement, Marc Mannes
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Family Preservation is examined as a manifestation of collective professional activity intent on reforming various aspects of the social welfare system. George Smelser's theoretical framework is used to analyze and interpret the emergence and development of the Family Preservation Movement. The article identifies societal problems which spawned the movement, the formation of a shared belief system, and the confirmation and sanctioning of those beliefs. Factors which mobilized increasing numbers of professionals to the cause, efforts which reflect collective action, and the conventionalization and standardization of the movement are discussed.
Community Servicelearning And The Vocational Teacher, Robert D. Shumer
Community Servicelearning And The Vocational Teacher, Robert D. Shumer
Guides
While many have tried to understand the notion of service-learning, no one seems to agree on one definition or description. A Wingspread conference in 1990 defined service-learning as both a philosophy and a program (Giles, Honnet, & Migliore, 1991). The National and Community I Service Act (1990) contained a four part definition which described characteristics and processes of service-learning, including reflective components which tie service experiences to a curriculum.

The Impact Of Third Party Reimbursement On Occupational Therapy And Vision Rehabilitation Services: A Comparative Case Study, Tiehan Liu
Dissertations
This is a comparative case study of occupational therapy and vision rehabilitation services. The purpose of this study is to describe how environmental forces, especially third party reimbursement, shape occupational therapy in terms of organizational form, setting, procedure of services and documentation process. The study will further examine the current external and internal conditions under which vision rehabilitation professionals may develop third party payment, especially Medicare and Medicaid. Based on environment theories and the experience of occupational therapy, the potential impact of such reimbursement on vision rehabilitation services is discussed.

Caring For Dementing And Nondementing Chronically Ill Elderly In Belgium: Modeling Salutogenic And Pathogenic Processes, Timothy John Gallagher
Caring For Dementing And Nondementing Chronically Ill Elderly In Belgium: Modeling Salutogenic And Pathogenic Processes, Timothy John Gallagher
Dissertations
The predominant model in the study of stress and disease has been identified as the pathogenic orientation. The underlying assumption of this orientation is that stress is, by nature, disease causing. An alternative model is the salutogenic orientation (Antonovsky, 1979). Researchers using the salutogenic approach are concerned with explaining the origins of health. In the present study, a sample of Flemish caregivers {N = 126) to persons with chronic dementing and nondementing disorders is examined in order to detail how sense of coherence (a measure of personality disposition), the nature of patient pathology, demographic characteristics, coping resources, and perceived negative …

Prophets And Preference: Constructing And Maintaining A Homosexual Identity In The Mormon Church, Richard D. Phillips
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This thesis is a descriptive ethnography of homosexuals and homosexuality in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or Mormon church, The study employs the labeling perspective in sociology and uses gay Mormons to examine how an individual constructs and maintains a homosexual identity in an environment where such an orientation is stigmatized and devalued. Qualitative interviews and documentary analysis are the chief methodological tools for this study.
The contradictions between a homosexual lifestyle and Mormon theology are outlined, and a history of Mormon church policy concerning homosexual members from 1959 to the present is presented. The study finds …

Correlates And Infant Mortality: Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Among Black Women In The United States, Paulette Aubrey
Masters Theses
Often referred to as "cot death" or "crib death," sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is the single leading cause of infant death in infants aged 28 days to 1 year of life. Although the exact etiology of SIDS remains unknown, epidemiological studies have identified risk factors associated with higher rates of SIDS. In this study, the relationship between sudden infant death syndrome and maternal education among black women who gave birth in the United States during 1983 was examined.
The population for this study consisted of black infants who were born in 1983 and died before their first birthday. Among …
Beyond Sugar And Spice: Labeling Female Genitalia, Ethel E. Hellman
Beyond Sugar And Spice: Labeling Female Genitalia, Ethel E. Hellman
Institute for the Humanities Theses
Previous studies have indicated that, in our culture, female genitalia are unlabeled, mis-labeled, and/or negatively labeled, while male genitalia are not.
Twenty-five mothers of young children were interviewed to determine what labels they were teaching their children for sexual body parts. The women later met in small groups to discuss the i r reactions to a soft-sculpture of female genitalia.
The study found that twice as many male children were taught common designations for their own genitalia than were female children. In addition, a greater proportion of female children were given a label for male genitalia, than male children were …

Theory And The Generation And Subversion Of Knowledge, Dennis Saleebey
Theory And The Generation And Subversion Of Knowledge, Dennis Saleebey
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
This essay is an argument for the refurbishing of theoretical thinking in social work. In particular, the author calls for the infusion of generative as opposed to normative theory in the profession. Only generative theory has been proven to invigorate the thinking and doing of professional social workers.

Friendship Patterns Of Chinese Students And Their Adjustment In The United States, Changhua Wang
Friendship Patterns Of Chinese Students And Their Adjustment In The United States, Changhua Wang
Dissertations and Theses
International students who experience difficulties in a new culture are often considered to have suffered a breakdown in their normal healthy psychological functioning, and therefore need therapy and counselling (Pedersen et al, 1976). This study views failure and problems experienced by the sojourner as a result of lack of the necessary new social skills and knowledge. Social networks, particularly friendships, are thus extremely important in that such networks are not only source of social support [sic], but also major channels through which such skills and knowledge are acquired [sic].

The Sociologist As Expert Witness, Jean H. Thoresen
The Sociologist As Expert Witness, Jean H. Thoresen
Clinical Sociology Review
The role of the expert witness in court proceedings is an important part of the American judicial system. Sociologists can make substantial contributions to the way in which the law as an institution evolves if they increase their availability and participation in legal proceedings. One way to do this is as an expert witness. In court, expert witnesses can do what no other witnesses can do: they may offer opinions and conclusions based solely on their professional training and expertise. This provides them with a special role and opportunity to define areas of the law, such as what constitutes a …

An Exercise In Gender: The Bem Sex Role Inventory In The Classroom, Martin A. Monto
Clinical Sociology Review
This manuscript describes a classroom exercise in which students leam about aspects of their own sex role orientation by completing the Bem Sex Role Inventory (BSRI). The exercise represents one way in which the themes of clinical sociology can contribute to the teaching of other sociology courses. Specifically, the exercise is 1) interventionist, 2) multidisciplinary, 3) humane, and 4) holistic. The exercise underscores the potential for alternative conceptions of gender without reinforcing traditional stereotypes. This manuscript introduces the Bem Sex Role Inventory, describes its administration in the classroom, provides ideas for incorporating the exercise into sociology courses, and provides an …

The Citicorp Interactive Work Ethic Game: Sociological Practice Use In The Classroom, Harry Cohen
Clinical Sociology Review
Citicorp has developed an employee training unit in a game format on the subject of ethics. Citicorp provided a game and its manuals for use with students in sociology classes taught by the author. This paper describes the game and its purposes, subjects covered in the game and how it was developed and validated, as well as sociological practice uses in the university classroom. An alleged major ethical problem at Citicorp is discussed. Some limitations of teaching ethical thinking when psychodynamic and social barriers stand in the way of ethical action are discussed in this paper, and in the classroom, …
