Changes In Labor Force Activities And Income Of The Elderly Before And After Retirement: A Longitudinal Analysis, Namkee G. Choi May 1994

Changes In Labor Force Activities And Income Of The Elderly Before And After Retirement: A Longitudinal Analysis, Namkee G. Choi

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This paper analyzes the changes in work hours and the economic profile of the elderly for a period of 11 years before and after retirement. Workers of all economic status decreased their work hours gradually as retirement approached. But findings show that, as they decreased their work hours, workers with higher preretirement economic status experienced more drastic reduction in income than those with lower economic status. Nevertheless, the preretirement income gap was maintained in postretirment economic status mostly due to differences in asset income and pension benefits. Policies to assist low-income retirees are recommended.

A Marxian Review Of Gerontological Literature, Stephen M. Marson, L. Richard Della Fave

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

A major concern for the sociology of aging and social gerontology is the lack of theoretical rigor. In particular, Birren and Bengtson (1988) describe all of social gerontology as "data-rich but theory-poor." In an effort to deal with the lack of theory, this essay reviews the general social gerontology literature from a Marxian perspective. The findings suggest that the Marxian framework can illuminate aspects of social gerontology hitherto left unexamined in both the academic and applied arenas.

Introduction - The Legacy Of African-American Leadership In Social Welfare, Iris Carlton-Laney Mar 1994

Introduction - The Legacy Of African-American Leadership In Social Welfare, Iris Carlton-Laney

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The legacy of African-American leadership in social welfare history is only recently finding space in social work literature. The small number of professional journals in social work that publish historical articles, along with institutionalized resistance to the acknowledgement of African-Americans contributions to the development of the profession, have contributed to this dearth of scholarship. The results have been that many professionals are disinclined to perceive of African-Americans as resourceful, skilled and powerful. Instead, the theme of pathology permeates social work literature, teaching, and ultimately social work practice. The social work profession emphasizes the importance of diversity, yet fails to acknowledge …

Guidelines For Handling Domestic Violence Cases In Community Mental Health Centers, Carol E. Jordan, Robert Walker Feb 1994

Guidelines For Handling Domestic Violence Cases In Community Mental Health Centers, Carol E. Jordan, Robert Walker

Office for Policy Studies on Violence Against Women Publications

Community mental health centers are becoming increasingly involved in the delivery of services to victims and perpetrators of domestic violence. To help centers plan a domestic violence program and address the risk of liability in treating clients who may be dangerous, the authors suggest principles to guide clinical decisions, standards for service delivery, and standards for staff development.

Interviewer Attitudes About The Mentally Ill, Rosalind J. Dworkin, Anthony Gary Dworkin Jan 1994

Interviewer Attitudes About The Mentally Ill, Rosalind J. Dworkin, Anthony Gary Dworkin

Clinical Sociology Review

Interviewer attitudes and expectations about respondents are known to influence data quality. When respondents are from deviant groups, such as the mentally ill, special problems could develop. Questionnaires were completed by 188 individuals from a potential pool of employable interviewers. Preferences for interviewing targets and locations, prior experience, and perceived dangerousness of the mentally ill were measured. The mentally ill are among the least preferred targets. Locations implying higher levels of control and cooperation were desired. Using a path analysis, preference for interviewing the mentally ill was most affected by diversity of prior contact and the perception of dangerousness.

Community-Based Aids Prevention And Care In Africa: Case Studies From Five African Countries, Ann Leonard Jan 1994

Community-Based Aids Prevention And Care In Africa: Case Studies From Five African Countries, Ann Leonard

HIV and AIDS

The Population Council carried out a three-year project entitled “Community-Based AIDS Prevention and Care in Africa: Building on Local Initiatives.” Given the constraints faced by the health care infrastructure in responding to the AIDS crisis and the limitations of traditional educational approaches in motivating people to modify their sexual behavior, in the African context community-based AIDS prevention and care of those affected are the first line of defense against the infection. This project was developed to explore efforts by organizations in Africa dealing directly with the consequences of AIDS, to understand the essential components of effective community-based efforts for AIDS …

The Myth Of The "Battered Husband Syndrome", Jack C. Straton Jan 1994

The Myth Of The "Battered Husband Syndrome", Jack C. Straton

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The most recurrent backlash against women's safety is the myth that men are battered as often as women. Suzanne Steinmetz created this myth with her 1977 study of 57 couples, in which four wives were seriously beaten but no husbands were beaten. By a convoluted thought process she concluded that her finding of zero battered husbands implied that men just don't report abuse and therefore 250,000 American husbands are battered each year by their wives, a figure that exploded to 12 million in the subsequent media feeding frenzy.

Men have never before been shy in making their needs known, so …

Journal Of The Community Development Society Vol. 25, No. 02, Center For Public Affairs Research (Cpar)

Publications

For more than twenty-five years, the journal of the Community Development Society has disseminated information on the theory, research, and practice of community development. Biannual publications have contained the most relevant materials that add to our knowledge of community development. While much of the material in the Journal articles has been derived from generally accepted principles, concepts, or practices of community development, from time to time a few of the articles may have attempted to dramatically extend current thinking. We learn by challenging what has been accepted. For generations the social sciences have advanced using some modification of this learning …

Midlife Experience Of Contemporary Women Views Along The Midway, Paula Deangelis Panchuck Jan 1994

Midlife Experience Of Contemporary Women Views Along The Midway, Paula Deangelis Panchuck

Educational Studies Dissertations

Examines the experience of midlife and the expectations of midlife and aging of 22 Caucasian, African American, Latina, Chinese, and Asian-Indian midlife women, ages 40 to 60, who differ in sexual orientation, income, employment, marital and parenting status. Influenced by social and family expectations for women in their early years, most women expected midlife would include husband, home and family. The women describe midlife as positive and fulfilling, disclaim the relevance of "midlife crisis" to their lives and report higher levels of self-confidence, self-reliance and self-understanding. Tempered by an awareness of imperfect circumstances in their lives and compassion for their …

Diploma Nursing Students' Attitudes Toward Poverty, Elizabeth Louise Phillips Jan 1994

Diploma Nursing Students' Attitudes Toward Poverty, Elizabeth Louise Phillips

Masters Theses

According to King, stereotyped perceptions may interfere with nurse-client transactions. Therefore, nurses' should possess attitudes which enable them to care for individuals who live in poverty. A descriptive correlational design was used to examine first year and second year diploma nursing students' attitudes toward individuals living in poverty. It was hypothesized that second year diploma nursing students would demonstrate a more positive attitude toward those living in poverty than first year diploma nursing students.; A convenience sample of diploma nursing students (N = 102) completed the "Attitudes about Poverty and Poor Peoples" scale utilized to assess students' attitudes (Atherton et …

A Guidebook For A Service Model Of Leadership Development, Higher Education Research Institute Jan 1994

A Guidebook For A Service Model Of Leadership Development, Higher Education Research Institute

Guides

Although the primary purpose of the materials presented in this Guidebook is to facilitate the development of programs for student leadership development on the campus, we recognize that the life of the typical student affairs practitioner is already so busy and full that he or she may not be able to afford the luxury of embarking on major new efforts of this type. For this reason, we believe that there are other applications of the principles underlying this model that might indeed relate more directly to the daily activities of practicing student affairs professionals.

Society And Self: A Symbolic Interactionist Framework For Sociological Practice, Janet Mancini Billson Jan 1994

Society And Self: A Symbolic Interactionist Framework For Sociological Practice, Janet Mancini Billson

Clinical Sociology Review

Interactionist concepts and explanations of human behavior prevalent among major psychological theory groups are traced in relationship to the symbolic interactionist principles of emergence, voluntarism, and process. I argue that most theory central to psychology is interactionist in nature; that central tenets of symbolic interactionism are woven throughout psychological theory; and that the same interactionist premises can equally form the foundation for clinical sociology as a form of sociological practice.

The Integration Of Intervention And Evaluation: Avoiding Theoretical Pitfalls, Kees Mesman Schultz Jan 1994

The Integration Of Intervention And Evaluation: Avoiding Theoretical Pitfalls, Kees Mesman Schultz

Clinical Sociology Review

On behalf of the evaluation of policy outcomes, Mayer and Greenwood (1980) developed their model of causally related concepts, reflecting the entire policy process from the formulation of policy plans up to and including the outcomes of the resulting policy measures. This model was customized for the evaluation of treatment programs in the field of youth welfare (Mesman Schultz 1987). It turned out, each of these models provides a sound basis for several research projects. Yet, in trying to find an explanation for poor policy outcomes after ex-post-facto evaluation, one has to be prepared for two possible pitfalls. These occur …

Health And Social Services, Formal Organizations, And The Mexican American Elderly, Norma Williams Jan 1994

Health And Social Services, Formal Organizations, And The Mexican American Elderly, Norma Williams

Clinical Sociology Review

Students of everyday life are making a significant contribution to understanding the manner in which persons carry out their daily activities. However, they have overlooked the impact of bureaucratic organizations on persons in various social settings. Based upon intensive in-depth interviews of sixty Mexican American elderly in Dallas, Texas, the research revealed numerous barriers to their utilization of health and social services and demonstrates why one must consider carefully how health and social service organizations affect the lives of elderly Mexican Americans. One must also recognize that the quality of life of Mexican American elders can be improved by increasing …

A Study Of Men In Non-Traditional Male Occupations, Fiona Raewyn Kelly Jan 1994

A Study Of Men In Non-Traditional Male Occupations, Fiona Raewyn Kelly

Theses : Honours

In the past the majority of occupations were very clearly divided into 'men's work' and 'women's work' and such attitudes persist today. The man who crosses over into an occupation traditionally considered to be a female occupation upsets society's gender assumptions. Some research indicates that there are many advantages for these men; others have found that it is a difficult transition creating many problems for the men involved, one of the most significant being the persistent questioning of their sexual orientation. This research takes a close look at the experiences of four men in non-traditional male occupations. The subjects studied …

Intercountry Adoptive Families In Western Australia: The Well-Being Of Their Four To Sixteen-Year-Old Adoptees, Trudy Rosenwald Jan 1994

Intercountry Adoptive Families In Western Australia: The Well-Being Of Their Four To Sixteen-Year-Old Adoptees, Trudy Rosenwald

Theses : Honours

The study investigated the well-being of 283 four to sixteen-year-old intercountry adopted (ICA) children in general and in relation to two specific adoption variables. The sample represented 80% of the estimated 4-16 year old ICA population of Western Australia (W A). Well-being was defined in terms of competence, happiness, health and problem behaviours. The primary source of information was Achenbach's parent reported Child Behavior Check List (CBCL) as used by the Western Australian Child Health Survey (WACHS). Bowlby's attachment theory provided the theoretical framework for the prediction that adoption after the age of 6 months, and the experience of adversity …
