Ua62/8/1 A Study Guide For The Development Of The History Of Social Thought, J. E. Jones, Wku Government

WKU Administration Documents

Sociology is often called the study of society or of social life. But such a simple definition in terms of subject matter does not distinguish it from the other social sciences. For they all study social life or, to put it more precisely, patterns of conduct that are common to groups of people. It is not their subject matter but their approach to it that differentiates the various social sciences. They ask different questions about social conduct, focus upon different regularities in it, and hence arrive at different explanatory principles for it. The economist, for example, is concerned with those …

Unemployment In Omaha In Relation To The Armour Closing, Kenneth Root, John P. Zipay Feb 1968

Unemployment In Omaha In Relation To The Armour Closing, Kenneth Root, John P. Zipay

Publications

On September 29, 1967, Armour and. Company announced that effective six months from that date, the Omaha Armour plant would be closed, displacing a labor force of approximately 2, 200 workers. This statement, announcing the closing of the third meatpacking firm in Omaha within the past two years, was startling and indicative of far- reaching consequences for Omaha, its people and economy. Numerous social agencies, along with the Chamber of Commerce and the Nebraska Employment Service, became involved in joining together in a united effort through the development of their own organization-- ACT, the Armour Coordinating Team. ACT is an …

A Proposed Extension Program In Family Life Education For Indonesia Union College, Margaret Penhallurick Aaen

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Indonesia, potentially one of the richest and most powerful of the emerging nations, could profit by an active program in family-life education such as has proved beneficial in other parts of the world. This is especially true in the rural areas. It is the purpose or this paper to explore possibilities for and to develop an extension program in home improvement, sanitation, child care, and nutrition which could be set up at Indonesia Union College, located in a typical rural area of Java. This paper will form the basis for a handbook for Home Economies teachers and extension workers. It …

Mexican-American Children In The Process In Acculturation, Elizabeth Ford Stone O'Neill Jan 1968

Mexican-American Children In The Process In Acculturation, Elizabeth Ford Stone O'Neill

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The web of Mexican-American life is complex in its origins, its manifestations, and its degree of identification with or alienation from the dominant culture. A thesis of the length of this one can deal with all this complexity only in a superficial way. However, by a rather narrowly defined examination of a few children certain insights may be gained which could be used as a basis for generalization about other children of similar background, and perhaps even for some tentative generalizations about the problems of the Mexican-American community as a whole.

With this purpose in mind -- to inquire intensively …

On The Threshold Of Community Mental Health, Elizabeth Ann Glosser Jan 1968

On The Threshold Of Community Mental Health, Elizabeth Ann Glosser

Honors Projects

In the midst of whirlwind social change, the United States finds its mobility and standard of living rising along with its crime rate and mental illness statistics. Though voluntary social welfare has historically undertaken the treatment of such social problems as emotional disturbance and marital discord, services seem unable to keep pace with the demands of modern living. Careful community planning must organize the nation's many specialized social agencies to avoid overlapping and fragmentation of services in the face of growing needs. In McLean County, Illinois, as in every community, public goals and individual agency goals for mental health provisions …
