A Comparison Of Experiential And Classroom Learning Models In Teaching Health Problems Of The Poor, Gerald F. Braza Dec 1975

A Comparison Of Experiential And Classroom Learning Models In Teaching Health Problems Of The Poor, Gerald F. Braza

Thesis, Dissertations, Student Creative Activity, and Scholarship

The general problem was to assess differences, if any, in selected areas of knowledge, attitudes and behavior among students exposed to a classroom model with students exposed to an experiential (community live-in} model in learning about health problems of the poor. Specific problems included: the selection of instruments, the development of methods and materials for teaching the classroom and experiential groups, and the measurement of students' knowledge, attitudes, and behavior related to the poor and their health problems.

Environmental Influences On Decisions Regarding Structure And Function Of Homes For The Aged, Jordan I. Kosberg Nov 1975

Environmental Influences On Decisions Regarding Structure And Function Of Homes For The Aged, Jordan I. Kosberg

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Many of the stereotypes of homes for the aged* are carryovers from the past. By and large, these homes had rather limited objectives which revolved around the notion that homes should be custodial institutions. It can be said that these institutions had been extensions of the poor farm, giving shelter (and little more) to the aged who had nowhere else to go. In the past, social norms required grown children to care and provide for their aged parents, and the three-generation family under one roof was common-place. The nature of American society during these years (before urbanization and large-scale industrialization) …

Social Research On Housing In The United States: Directions And Themes, Shirley S. Angrist Nov 1975

Social Research On Housing In The United States: Directions And Themes, Shirley S. Angrist

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

I shall present a selective overview of recent themes and directions in social research on housing in the U.S. I narrowed the topic by focusing on research centering on the family and on neighborhood. These topics offer ways to concentrate on "social" research and to narrow a rather broad topic.

My meaning of "social" research encompasses work not only by sociologists. It also includes the separate or collaborative work of other disciplines, especially psychology, anthropology, social psychology, architecture and urban planning. Research on housing has from its Post-World War II flowering been an interdisciplinary enterprise. And it continues to be …

Residential Alienation, Home Ownership And The Limits Of Shelter Policy, Peter Marcuse Nov 1975

Residential Alienation, Home Ownership And The Limits Of Shelter Policy, Peter Marcuse

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

There is greater public confusion over housing policy today than there has been in any comparable period in the last thirty years. The Nixon-Ford administration's wholesale program terminations and budget slashes only cloak the problem temporarily. Everyone agrees that the ostrich ought to get his head out of the sand, but few agree where he should go once he doel so. Housing allowances, at this point, seem to many the best answei; at least they haven't been proven wanting yet. But others disagree, and certainly there is reason to be wary.

The Impact Of Urban Removal From A Child's Point Of View, L. K. Northwood Nov 1975

The Impact Of Urban Removal From A Child's Point Of View, L. K. Northwood

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

It is the premise of this paper that forced urban resettlement has more devastating consequences for children and their families than the usual voluntary moving process. The moving process, whether forced or voluntary, involves the following phases: a decision to change the place of residence, an exploration of housing opportunities in various areas, the final selection of one of these, activities associated with making the move, and activities associated with getting settled in the new house and neighborhood.

In The World But Not Of The World: A Church's Relation To Its Environment, James Earl Floyd Aug 1975

In The World But Not Of The World: A Church's Relation To Its Environment, James Earl Floyd

Student Work

Research in general and inductive research in particular often begins from an unfocused curiosity. From this perplexity, emerges the problem of research, the collecting of relevant data, and the drawing of theoretical inferences from said data. The current research enterprise includes these major problems but is, in many respects, different. That is to say, the execution is different from that which is found in "traditional patterns of investigation."

Nutrition Education For The Elderly, Laurie Manahan Aug 1975

Nutrition Education For The Elderly, Laurie Manahan

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Abstract not included.

Introduction

This paper examines the topic of nutrition education for the elderly. Only within the past decade has proper nutrition been recognized as making a major contribution to the health and well-being of the elderly. This recognition of the importance of nutrition in the later years has led to the recent establishment of many nutrition programs for the elderly. As nutrition education is seen as an important tool in improving the nutritional status of the elderly, many of these now programs include nutrition education components.

Part One of this paper discusses the relationship between nutrition and aging. …

The Predictive Validity Of A Police Officer Selection Program, Neil Bingham Davidson Jul 1975

The Predictive Validity Of A Police Officer Selection Program, Neil Bingham Davidson

Dissertations and Theses

This study was designed to determine the predictive validity of a police officer selection program and identify the contribution made by each major selection device to the total program. Police officers employed by the Portland Police Bureau who had completed three years of post-probationary employment were randomly assigned to a validation group and a cross-validation group on a two for one basis respectively. Beta weights were computed for the written test, interview and psychological scores in the validation group. The regression formula was then applied to the data in the cross-validation group. A cross-validation R of 0.12 was obtained between …

Alienation — In Marx And Modern Empirical Sociology, Isidor Wallimann Jul 1975

Alienation — In Marx And Modern Empirical Sociology, Isidor Wallimann

Program for the Advancement of Research on Conflict and Collaboration

Influence Of Sex Role Stereotypes On Ratings Of Male And Female Behavior, Constance Barclay Jul 1975

Influence Of Sex Role Stereotypes On Ratings Of Male And Female Behavior, Constance Barclay

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

An attempt was made to investigate the extent to which individuals are unknowingly influenced by a sex role stereotype in their evaluations of men and women. It was hypothesized that subjects would describe a character in more potency-related, “masculine” terms if that character had been identified as a male than if the character had been identified as a female. Subjects taking part in this study were an equal number of male and female students in introductory psychology classes. The semantic differential technique was employed as a descriptive tool for the subjects’ evaluations of a character they read about in a …

Toward A Typology Of Riotous Behavior Studies: Relationships Between Conceptual Areas & Methodological Techniques In Sociological Research, Maryline Glover Jul 1975

Toward A Typology Of Riotous Behavior Studies: Relationships Between Conceptual Areas & Methodological Techniques In Sociological Research, Maryline Glover

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

A typology was developed to demonstrate the relationship between the diverse theoretical explanations prevalent in riotous behavior research and the mode of data collection utilized for studying these theoretical explanations. The two principal variables identified are conceptual areas and methodological techniques. Conceptual areas consist of five categories and these are defined as structure: underlying social. economic and political preconditions which lead to riotous behavior; belief-motives: underlying predispositions of individuals or groups which lead to riotous behavior; setting: immediate determinants (assemblage process. ecological arrangements and socio-demographic factors) which lead to riotous behavior; action-behavior: actual behavior patterns and general characteristics found in …

The Subculture Of The Aging: An Empirical Test, William C. Lane Jul 1975

The Subculture Of The Aging: An Empirical Test, William C. Lane

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

During the past twenty-five years the discipline of social gerontology has emerged as a major field of interest among sociologists. A number of theories concerning the social aspects of the aging process have been proposed, but few have been empirically tested.

The central concern of the present study was to conduct an empirical test of the subculture of the aging theory developed by Arnold M. Rose. The subculture of the aging theory proposed that there is a growing awareness among many older people that they are not merely members of a social category, but are members of a social group …

The Socially Constructive Aspects Of Outside Agents In Community Decision-Making In A Rural Area, Barry R. Gordon, Daniel I. Rubenstein Jul 1975

The Socially Constructive Aspects Of Outside Agents In Community Decision-Making In A Rural Area, Barry R. Gordon, Daniel I. Rubenstein

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The "outside-change agent" is dangerous, something to be feared (based on past experiences, long since blurred by boredom and powerlessness) and not taken into the community. The outsider offers few, if any, tangible immediately useable resources -- only promises and fancy talk. Limited experience has taught the Appalachian that promises fade into misery and fancy talk to poverty. The self-fulfilling prophesy of inhospitality and disbelief in oneself, turn the Appalachian against the change agent and challenge the agent to leave the area out of self-felt persistent futility.

Evaluating Explorations And Demonstrations For Planning In Criminal Justice, Leonard Rutman Jul 1975

Evaluating Explorations And Demonstrations For Planning In Criminal Justice, Leonard Rutman

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Excerpt from the full-text article:

This paper has emphasized the importance of evaluative research as an integral component for both explorations and demonstrations, particularly for its contribution to planning in criminal justice. In so doing, an attempt has been made to differentiate the purposes and, consequently, the appropriate research strategies for evaluating these projects. The research of explorations aimed to facilitate the process of conceptualizing and operationalizing "innovative" services into testable demonstrations. To increase the validity and generalizability of individual demonstration projects, replications in different places under varying conditions are needed. According to Wholey, however, many small studies have been …

Role Exits Among The Aged, Nancy Whitelaw Mancini Jun 1975

Role Exits Among The Aged, Nancy Whitelaw Mancini

Dissertations and Theses

The concept of role exit presented by Zena Smith Blau in her book, Old Age in a Changing Society, refers to the ongoing process of relinquishing previously enacted social roles; a process which is part of everyday life for men and women of all ages. However, Blau argues that role exits in later life are different from those in earlier stages of the life cycle because they tend to be terminal and involuntary. These factors, according to Blau, cause role exits in old age to negatively influence the individual's overall satisfaction with life.

This thesis examines the concept of …

Close Supervision Program: An Analysis Of A Human Services Program, Thomas Wright Jr., V. Henderson Trotman Jun 1975

Close Supervision Program: An Analysis Of A Human Services Program, Thomas Wright Jr., V. Henderson Trotman

Dissertations and Theses

Multnomah County, Oregon, like many other counties across the nation, faces the perplexing problem of meeting the needs of the youthful offender. Historically, and even in more recent times, juvenile court authorities have relied primarily on detention facilities to provide secure custody for youthful offenders. However, the continued increase in delinquency and a growing storm of criticism of the juvenile court have led to a re-examination of current policy and a number of proposed changes on both the national and local level.

A policy change in Multnomah County with regard to detention of youthful offenders has led to the closure …

Migration To A Small Urban Place: An Examination Of Migration Histories In Creel, Chihuahua, Mexico, Donald Adamchak Jun 1975

Migration To A Small Urban Place: An Examination Of Migration Histories In Creel, Chihuahua, Mexico, Donald Adamchak

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Migration histories of a sample of the population in a small urban place--Creel, Chihuahua, Mexico were analyzed and compared to the results from studies of several large urban places in Latin America to see if patterns of migration and factors associated with the migratory process are similar or different. Seven basic hypotheses obtained from prior theoretical works and empirical studies were investigated.

The examination of migration to Creel and of Creel migrant characteristics revealed both similarities to and differences from previous examinations of larger urban areas in Latin America. Generalizations concerning reasons for migration, return migration, the northern push tendency, …
