The First Years Of Life: A Comparative Analysis Of British And American Parent Education, Deborah Anne Smith Guisti, Ellen Turner Jurevic, Jane Elizabeth Mozena, David W. Pedersen

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of our study is to analyze a British parent education program called "The First Years of Life" and compare it with some programs and educational services of similar content in America. We hope to ascertain whether "The First Years of Life," as presented by the Open University, affords a better means of providing information than some programs now existent in the United States offering prenatal and parent education.

Age, Race, Life Conditions, Use Of Social Welfare Services And The Morale Of The Elderly, Mary L. Waring, Jordan I. Kosberg Nov 1978

Age, Race, Life Conditions, Use Of Social Welfare Services And The Morale Of The Elderly, Mary L. Waring, Jordan I. Kosberg

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Although concerned professionals such as Kutner (1956), Cumming (1961), and Lawton (1972), have made strong beginnings in researching the psychological functioning of the elderly, only a few have explored the social and medical conditions of the aged, and especially their use of social welfare services, as these relate to a sense of well-being. Streib (1956) and Maddox (1968) were among the first to relate life-long patterning of social activity to later social activity and life satisfaction. Carp (1966), in a controlled study of housing, reported that housing did not affect the morale of low and middle income elderly. Lawton and …

Preparing Social Work Practitioners To Work With And In Behalf Of Older Adults, Margaret E. Hartford

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Practice in the field of social gerontology is one of the developing frontiers in social work. Now and in the foreseeable future, services with a population that is growing older will be a rapidly expanding field of practice. Many of the programs for older adults are multidisciplinary and demand collaboration among several professions and services. In some instances social work is and will be the central organizing force assuming administrative responsibility. In other instances social workers are collateral with several professions, and in still others social work services are an adjunct to another service profession, such as medicine nursing, urban …

Differential Aspects Of Assessment And Intervention In Social Work Practice With The Elderly And Their Families, Barbara Silverstone Nov 1978

Differential Aspects Of Assessment And Intervention In Social Work Practice With The Elderly And Their Families, Barbara Silverstone

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

So much in our society separates the rest of us from the old that a discussion of the differential aspects of practice with the elderly and their families (many of whom are aging) runs the risk of being redundant as well as a concealed endorsement of the professional biases which afflict us all. The truth of the matter is that important differences do exist between social work practice with the old and with younger generations, differentials which emanate from a sound gerontological knowledge base. Although the similarities far out-weigh the discrepancies, failure to recognize or delineate these differences has resulted …

Home Support Services And The Ecology Of Aging, Abraham Monk Nov 1978

Home Support Services And The Ecology Of Aging, Abraham Monk

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Home support services for the aged are emerging as a primary concern in the Title XX planning proposals put forth by states and localities. This is not surprising when one considers that Title XX guidelines require the setting of priorities among non-cash benefit programs that help insure the individual's self-sufficiency within his or her normal environment.

All services under Title XX must relate to one or more of five objectives for the individual client: economic independence; self care; prevention or remedy of neglect, abuse or other conditions which lead to dependence; intermediate community based care and, as a last resort …

The Politics Of Aging And Rural Social Services: An Exploratory Analysis, Roger A. Lohmann Aug 1978

The Politics Of Aging And Rural Social Services: An Exploratory Analysis, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The advent of federal funding for rural social services during the late 1960s and 1970s brought about changes in the political organization of rural America. A host of new organizational actors, like Area Agencies on Aging and various local aging agencies were created in rural communities across the country, in the wake of Baker v. Carr with its “one man/one vote” principle and funding through programs like the Economic Opportunity Act and the Older Americans Act. This article details a leadership succession model suggesting that local leadership of aging interests went through at least four distinct phases during this time: …

An Exploratory Analysis Of Participation In The Laetrile Movement, Yvonne M. Vissing

Masters Theses

Chapter I

The Problem and Its Background

The Purpose

The purpose of this thesis is to examine factors leading individuals to participate in the laetrile movement. Laetrile, a substance obtained from a variety of foods including apricot kernels, has been termed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to be both ineffective in the treatment of cancer, and even dangerous when taken in large amounts. Even so, over 50,000 people in the United States are estimated to use this substance for the control and prevention of cancer. They do so without the support of the orthodox medical profession, and may …

Drawing a dozen or more dolls from a large bag, Marlene Cummins invited a group of children, aged two to 17, to gather around her.

She pointed out different features-racial and physical-in each doll. She then explained how individuals in their very differences enrich the lives of those they touch.

The occasion was LHRAA 's first retreat for transracial families, held in late May at St. Benedict Center in Madison, Wisconsin. The weekend gave the 33 participants-from Indiana. Illinois, and Wisconsin a chance to share their experiences, their problems, their wisdom.

For more than three decades, Namibia (formerly Southwest Africa) has waited for independence from South Africa. Again and again, the United Nations called for free elections and full independence.

In April of this year, South Africa finally seemed ready to end its racist, colonial domination of Namibia. In August, an international team of 50 persons traveled to South Namibia. Following their report to the U.N."s Security Council, free elections were to follow-including freedom fighters such as SWAPO (Southwest People's Organization).

The theme of equal educational opportunity was a major concern of the urban Chicano Movement in the late sixties. Chicanos accused the entire school system of racism and insensitivity towards the Chicano community. Schools, declared the activists, used institutionalized techniques such as intelligence tests and a tracking system to insure that disproportional numbers of Chicano children would be placed in vocational education courses or in classes for the mentally retarded.

Evaluating Serving Learning Programs: A Guide Of Program Coordinators, Action

Evaluation/Reflection

Evaluation is a skill which is often surrounded with an aura of mystery. As a result, many program coordinators are reluctant to undertake evaluations. Some feel they do not have the necessary and special skills. Others do not see how evaluation -- which seems to concern itself with past activity-- can work to make programs different or better in the future. In point of fact, however, evaluation is one of the administrator's most important tools for planning future operations. And evaluation is most definitely a tool that can be used successfully by program coordinators who have not had any special …

Disengagement Of Older People In An Urban Setting, Melvina Somers Jun 1977

Disengagement Of Older People In An Urban Setting, Melvina Somers

Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation reevaluates the controversial Disengagement Theory of aging introduced by Elaine Cumming and William E. Henry in their book, Growing Old (1961), with particular emphasis on aging in the city.

Disengagement theory embodies the antithesis to the traditional activity theory of aging based on a work ethic. Disengagement theory holds that normal aging is an inevitable mutual withdrawal or disengagement between the aging person and others in the social system, that it is universal, and that, by impl ication,it is a mutually satisfying condition since it results in a new equilibrium between society and the aging individual. The theory …

New York City And The Economic Crisis, Joseph Harris Mar 1977

New York City And The Economic Crisis, Joseph Harris

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The crisis of New York City and the crises affecting many hundreds of other cities, counties, school districts, and other local and state governments are not accidents. They are a direct result of the neglect that social welfare receives at the hands of a government interested only in furthering the profits and position of the monopolies. Some people call the U.S. government a "warfare/welfare" state. I prefer to call it a state dominated by the giant corporations which control the economic and hence the political life of our nation. As long as federal policy continues to stress profits before people, …

The U.S. Government Accounting Office (GAO) has reported that almost 3500 American Indian women were sterilized without their proper consent between 1973 and 1976.

Senator James Abourezk, chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Indian Affairs, released the GAO's report. The subcommittee had requested the GAO study because Senator Abourezk had received many complaints that Indian women were being sterilized as a birth-control method without their knowledge or consent.

An Investigation Of The Combined Effect Of Agency Support And Professional Social Workers' Training On The Type Of Family Therapy Practiced By Agency-Based Social Workers, Betsy Marsh Mccartor, Margaret Labby

Dissertations and Theses

All persons are born into some form of family unit. The traditional family is a unit of people who live together over periods of time and have ties of marriage and kinship. Even if that unit is separated, as in death or adoption, qualities of one's personhood are closely connected with forebears and parents. Whether for good or bad, the family profoundly affects the individual.

The family is an important unit. Many stresses impinge upon it. The church and extended family are less influential on the family today. The school is less influential. Where does the family turn for support? …
