The Conservative Program Is A Women's Issue, Mimi Abramovitz
The Conservative Program Is A Women's Issue, Mimi Abramovitz
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The Conservative program strikes deeply at the institutions that support the economic independence and security of women. This paper reviews social welfare budget cuts, the relaxation of affirmative action and workplace health and safety rules, and the social issues agenda of the New Right for their impact on women's economic, social and political status. It describes how the Reagan Administration's economic recovery program victimizes women, especially minority women. Not only is the "feminization" of poverty intensified, but women are sent from the paid labor market back to unpaid labor in the home, aided and abetted by the social issues agenda …

An Investigation Of Selected Caring Behaviors In A Hong Kong Chinese Village, Mary Jon Waldron
An Investigation Of Selected Caring Behaviors In A Hong Kong Chinese Village, Mary Jon Waldron
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The lack of scientific information regarding caring beliefs, expectations, and behaviors in the Chinese community of Hong Kong was the problem underlying this descriptive study. A knowledge of caring behaviors as they routinely occur within a culture can provide a basis for the development of professional nursing care that is meaningful for the people of that culture. The purpose of the study was to obtain the opinions of the residents of a Hong Kong Chinese village regarding current beliefs and practices relating to touch, surveillance, health counseling, and special ethnocare techniques. Representatives of twenty families were interviewed with the assistance …
Community Representation And Empowerment In Long Term Care Settings: The Case Of The Nursing Home Patient Ombudsman, Abraham Monk, Lenard W. Kaye
Community Representation And Empowerment In Long Term Care Settings: The Case Of The Nursing Home Patient Ombudsman, Abraham Monk, Lenard W. Kaye
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
It is widely recognized that regulatory efforts outside of the nursing home have had relatively limited success in monitoring patient care complaints (New York State Moreland Act Commission, 1975; Weatherby, 1975). As a result, the public at large and an increasing number of policy analysts have aggressively called for the initiation of alternative long term care monitoring strategies (Regan, 1977; Linnane, 1977; Vladeck, 1980). One such recently developed administrative ameliorative, with direct ties to the local community, is the nursing home patient ombudsman. The ombudsman program, when serving as a complaint redress mechanism for the institutionalized aged, is believed to …

"The National Indian Lutheran Board has finished another busy and very productive year of operation. During this last year our involvement has continued in terms of promoting positive national policy, work with different Lutheran constituencies, participating with other ethnic groups, continuation of the National Indian Lutheran Board (NILB) grant program, and working as a co-worker with other national Indian organizations.''
That's how Paul Schultz began his annual president's report to the NILB board. More than two dozen board members and consultants attended the three day meeting at Cook Christian Training School in Tempe, AZ.

On July 1st, in an act of renew al, the Religious Committee for the ERA (RCERA) adopted a new name and an updated agenda. Called the Religious Network for Equality for Women (RNEW), this revitalized effort represents Protectants, Catholics and Jews. RNEW has about forty member organizations.

How can we participate in the vision of a transcultural church? How do individuals and families overcome the survivalism mentality that is spreading across the land? Can we be attuned to the realities of a North/South global church?
The prophet Joel tells us that God's Spirit will lead us: Then we will dream dreams and see visions. Then we will proclaim God's message.

Aging And The Milieu Of Social Policy, Roger A. Lohmann, Nancy Lohmann
Aging And The Milieu Of Social Policy, Roger A. Lohmann, Nancy Lohmann
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
One facet of the new conservatism, which is drawing so much interest but not much information currently is the proposal for converting a large number of social service programs (including the Administration on Aging) into a single community block grant program. Even without the Reagan Administration and its new conservatism, however, the case for substantial--if less dramatic--changes in the network of services and programs which benefit the aged has been growing for some time. In this chapter, wel review some of the broader implications of current social policies for the aged, and some of the criticisms raised among gerontologists, concentrating …
Clinical Sociology On The One-To-One Level: A Social Behavioral Approach To Counseling, Roger A. Straus
Clinical Sociology On The One-To-One Level: A Social Behavioral Approach To Counseling, Roger A. Straus
Clinical Sociology Review
Clinical sociology involves interventions for change at any or all levels of social organization, based upon and/or guided by sociological principles and perspectives (Straus, 1979a,b). Although sociologists are typically envisioned as working with groups, organizations, communities and other large social units, sociological social psychologists have, for some fifty years, demonstrated an interest in working with individuals and their intimate groups (Wirth, 1931).
In this paper, I examine the social behavioral approach to individual counseling which has evolved from my experience as a private practitioner working with problems of conduct, substance abuse, sexuality, interpersonal relationships, job and life stress, and the …

Community Service Opportunities And Older Americans, Zev Harel, Ruth Ellen Lindenberg
Community Service Opportunities And Older Americans, Zev Harel, Ruth Ellen Lindenberg
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Contemporary society has brought about a situation where older Americans have limited opportunities for contributory roles. They have limited involvement in the development and provision of services aimed to promote their own well-being and the welfare and well-being of others. This article examines the importance of contributory roles and functions in light of theoretical perspectives, social work values, and research evidence which indicates that life satisfaction and psychological well being of older persons is related to continued productivity and the opportunity to carry substantive social roles. This article reviews and discusses contributory opportunities for older persons as part of community …

The Center for Applied Urban Research continued to fulfill its mission of applied research, community service and training during 1980-81. Two major events that took place during the past year have greatly strengthened the ability of CAUR to carry out this mission. In October, CAUR moved into new quarters at the Peter Kiewit Conference Center at 1313 Farnam on the Mall in downtown Omaha. With just over 7,000 square feet of space, CAUR has been able to carry out project activity in a more efficient manner. More importantly, the downtown location of CAUR has provided an expanded clientele with greater …

Human Services Useage By Older Hispanics In Nebraska, David R. Dimartino, Carole Davis
Publications
The original report on which this article is based resulted from research conducted by CAUR for the Nebraska Mexican American Commission with funding from the Nebraska Commission on Aging. Dr. DiMartino and Carole M. Davis were co-investigators for the project and co-authored the lengthier report. The cooperation and assistance provided by so many members of the Hispanic communities in Lincoln, Omaha, and Scottsbluff made the study possible.
