In 1990, the Greater Omaha Chamber of Co=erce created a study group to examine public elementary and secondary education in Nebraska. The study group was composed of representatives of the business co=unity, educators, and members of the Unicameral. Five work sessions were held to listen to experts discuss the approaches being used by other states to improve education, to discuss the applicability of such approaches to our state, and to identify a set of activities that would assure that pupils throughout Nebraska would be able to compete successfully with other young people in this country and around the world.

Norfolk Resource Mothers Program Evaluation, Margaret Moore Konefal

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Management

This study uses the post-test only design to assess the preliminary effects of a community-based policy initiative, the Norfolk State University Resource Mothers Program (RMP), on the gestational ages, birth weights, and survival rates of infants born to participating adolescent mothers.

The RMP uses experienced mothers or paraprofessionals similar in race and socio-economic status to the participating teenagers. These persons are trained to assist pregnant adolescents and teen parents with nonmedical dimensions of pregnancy and child care. They recruit teens into the RMP, encouraging them to get early prenatal care. Resource Mothers provide teen mothers and their families with practical …

Aging And Social Policy, Roger A. Lohmann Mar 1991

Aging And Social Policy, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Social planning has a long history in social work. It has gone from an early emphasis on community as the modal point to an emphasis on public policy planning at the state and federal levels and recently to an emphasis on organizational issues and initiatives. Social planning has been a primary tool in the long-term development of new institutions and practices brought about by the unprecendented increases in the size of the aged population. Probably the oldest intact social planning systems for aging in most American communities today are the networks of community planning which grew up in the voluntary …

"...Something Shining, Like Gold--But Better." The National Indian Youth Leadership Model: A Manual For Program Leaders, Mcclellan Hall

Tribal Nations Documents

A lot of people are talking about education these days, including President Bush, who recently launched his America 2000 plan here in St. Paul. It hasn't been like this for many years, certainly not during the 1980s when the issue of young people dropping out, pushed out, or bored out was almost invisible on the national agenda. For McClellan Hall, however, concern for how children learn-especially Indian children, has been a lifelong mission. As national interest focuses on education, it is essential that credible voices such as McClellan's, voices which neither claim nor seek a national limelight, be heard amid the current …

This study is the result of a recognition of the sizeable representation of persons from Arabic-speaking nations who reside in the State of Michigan, most of them in the Detroit Metropolitan Area. The study replicates the Needs Assessment Survey of the Over 60 population which was conducted in 1985, and represents the third in a series of studies, each designed to focus on a specific ethnic subgroup of the Michigan population. Hispanic elders were studied in 1987, followed by Native American elders in 1989, and the present study of Arab and Chaldean elders in 1991.

The Bangladesh Women's Health Coalition, Bonnie J. Kay, Adrienne Germain, Maggie Bangser

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

The Bangladesh Women's Health Coalition (BWHC) represents an important initiative in the movement toward more responsive modes of family planning delivery. In the context of a society where there are strict limits on the social role and physical mobility of most girls and women, BWHC has set itself the ambitious goal of enabling women—no matter what their income or education—to learn how to manage their own reproductive health and the health of their children in a way that enhances their sense of strength and competence. One of the real strengths of BWHC has been its willingness to learn from experience …

Parent Indicators Of Quality Care In Out Of School Hours Care In Western Australia, Vicki Banham, Allison Picton-King

Research outputs pre 2011

An Investigation into the identification of indicators of quality care for outside school hours was undertaken.

Data was derived from a survey of 252 parents with children currently attending after school care in W.A., and compared with the indicators of quality developed by the Joint Review of the Commonwealth Department of Community Services and Commonwealth Public Service Board on Outside School Hours Care, Vacation Care and Adventure Playgrounds. Although parents identified specific indicators of quality care, the findings were consistent with those of the Review.

Comparing these findings with the extensive current research on pre-school care indicators of quality, suggested …

An Ethnohistorical Study Of The Swan-Canning Fishery In Western Australia, 1697-1837, Paul R. Weaver

Theses : Honours

The study takes a multidisciplinary approach by examining historical and contemporary scientific literature in order to determine the degree of intercultural competition which took place between Aborigines and Europeans for the native food resources which were associated with the Swan-Canning estuarine system, which is located in the south west of Western Australia, at approximately longitude 116" E. and latitude 32" S. The 1697-1827 time frame of the study, covers all the documented pre-colonial European visits to the fishery environs and also incorporates the first decade of the British colonisation process at the Swan River, which can be said to have …

Combining Sociology With Epidemiology: Community-Oriented Primary Care In A Rural Mountain County, Thomas Plaut, Suzanne Landis, June Trevor Jan 1991

Combining Sociology With Epidemiology: Community-Oriented Primary Care In A Rural Mountain County, Thomas Plaut, Suzanne Landis, June Trevor

Clinical Sociology Review

Community-Oriented Primary Care (COPC) focuses attention on the community as "patient" and involves its residents in a process of discernment of health needs and consequent action. COPC's emphasis on community involvement provides an opportunity for the sociologist to create the tools for resident participation in health needs assessment and subsequent interventions. This paper describes sociology's role in a rural Appalachian county COPC program funded by the W. K. Kellogg Foundation. Some 41 focus group interviews were employed to reach more than 416 residents. Interview results were combined with epidemiological and census data and fed back to a 27-member Community Advisory …

The Sociological Practitioner In Organizational Health Promotion Programming, Linda R. Weber Jan 1991

The Sociological Practitioner In Organizational Health Promotion Programming, Linda R. Weber

Clinical Sociology Review

In this paper, the roles of the sociological practitioner will be investigated as they apply to the rapidly growing field of organizational health promotion. Health promotion programs include a combination of educational, organizational, and environmental activities designed to support health-conducive behavior within the work setting. Such programs usually include weight reduction programs, aerobic exercise classes, blood pressure monitoring and so on. Theoretically, the ideas of Mead and Becker are investigated as one approach to the understanding of health behaviors. Methodologically, the utilization of needs assessment and evaluation tools provide integral information for the development of a program specifically tailored to …

Obesity And Nutritional Sociology: A Model For Coping With The Stigma Of Obesity, Jeffery Sobal Jan 1991

Obesity And Nutritional Sociology: A Model For Coping With The Stigma Of Obesity, Jeffery Sobal

Clinical Sociology Review

Nutritional sociology uses sociological theories and methods to study and influence food patterns, eating habits, and nutrition. Obesity and weight loss are important topics in nutritional sociology, and stigmatization of the obese is a long-standing interest. Most past sociological work has only described stigmatization, rather than developing ways to facilitate coping with it. A model for coping with the stigma of obesity is presented here. The model includes four components: Recognition, Readiness, Reaction, and Repair. Recognition involves awareness of the stigma of obesity and understanding about stigmatization. Readiness involves anticipation that stigmatization may occur in specific settings or by some …

Community-Based Learning: A Study Of A Model Dropout Prevention Program, Robert D. Shumer Nov 1990

Community-Based Learning: A Study Of A Model Dropout Prevention Program, Robert D. Shumer

School K-12

Dropout prevention is a major concern of school districts throughout the country. In Los Angeles it is estimated that 39% of students fail to graduate from high school. Nationwide, the rate is not too much different, especially in inner city communities where large numbers of Hispanic and African-American youth attend school. While dropout rates have been traditionally high for decades, people continue to ask, why? Many billions of dollars have been spent trying to answer this question and many programs have been developed which attempt to address some of these problems. No one has come up with a comprehensive answer …
