Towards The Holocaust: The Social And Economic Collapse Of The Weimar Republic, Michael N. Dobkowski, Isidor Wallimann
Towards The Holocaust: The Social And Economic Collapse Of The Weimar Republic, Michael N. Dobkowski, Isidor Wallimann
Books
The social system of Weimar Germany has always been controversial. From the start 1Weimar society was characterized by a peculiar fluidity: between 1913 and 1933, the German Reich, commonly referred to as the Weimar Republic, was a virtual laboratory of sociocultural experimentation. In the streets of German towns and cities, political armies competed for followers--a process punctuated by assassinations and advertised by street battles embroiling monarchists, imperial militarists, nihilistic war veterans, Communists, Socialists, anarchists, and National Socialists. Parliamentary activity involved about twenty-five political parties whose shifting alliances produced twenty governmental cabinets with an average lifespan of less than nine months.

The Self Perceptions Of School Principals Compared To Their Actual Performance On Certain Affective Traits, Michael L. Holtgren
The Self Perceptions Of School Principals Compared To Their Actual Performance On Certain Affective Traits, Michael L. Holtgren
Dissertations
Problem. The role of the school principal is paramount in the operation of a school system, and affective behavior is an essential part of that role. It was the purpose of the study to determine if a discrepancy exists between the self-perceptions of principals as affective educators and their actual performance.
Method. Thirty-two school principals, their superintendents, and a sampling of their teachers were studied. The self-perceptions of the principals were identified concerning eight affective traits and eight school-climate factors. The superintendent and teachers evaluated their principal's performance on these traits and factors.

A group of four volunteers from the United States is living . in Jalapa, Nicaragua, as part of a nonviolent program entitled, "Witness for Peace." Jalapa, near the northern border of Nicaragua with Honduras has been the site of attacks by the anti-Nicaraguan "contras" forces.
The Witness for Peace program has grown out of the experience of some North Americans who have visited Nicaragua since the Sandinista revolution in 1979. The group wants to speak out and act against the toll that the ongoing war is taking in human lives.
Social Action Organization Participation And Personal Change In The Poor: Part I, Robert D. Herman
Social Action Organization Participation And Personal Change In The Poor: Part I, Robert D. Herman
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Evidence bearing on the hypothesis that participation by the poor in social action organizations results in personal change is inconsistent and open to diverse interpretations. This paper first reviews that evidence and then takes the first step toward a substantive reconciliation of the apparently inconsistent evidence - the development of a typology of social action organization forms. The typology, which is derived from the literature on poverty and organizational analysis, incorporates the elements of (1) inclusion of the poor, (2) resource base of organizational sponsors, and (3) output goal orientation. The typology will be used in Part I I to …

The Origins Of The Occupational Safety And Health Act Of 1970, Patrick G. Donnelly
The Origins Of The Occupational Safety And Health Act Of 1970, Patrick G. Donnelly
Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work Faculty Publications
This paper analyzes the emergence of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 and finds previous explanations of its origin inadequate. I trace the roots of this law to the protests of rank-and-file workers across the United States at a time when the support of these workers was particularly important to the two main political parties. The protest was directed not only at those employers who operated unsafe and unhealthy workplaces, but also at union officials who paid little or no attention to safety and health issues in negotiating new contracts.

Some Thoughts On The Patriarchal State And The Defeat Of The Era, Zillah Eisenstein
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
What does it signify politically--that is what does it tell us about the relations of power of the 'state' in 1982--that the Equal Rights Amendment has not been ratified? It tells us that the patriarchal foundations of the state, even when narrowly defined in terms of the law, remain necessary to those in power. Or (at least) that those in power, particularly in this case state legislators as well as President Reagan, think that the political system of capitalist patriarchy cannot abide women's (legal) equality.

Factors In The Control Of Corporations: Structural And Bureaucratic Impediments, Doris Jean Cubbernuss
Dissertations
The extent to which corporate power, in and of itself, is considered a problem in U.S. society is a function of the perceived role of the corporation in social, political, and economic structures. Recognition of the inordinate powers of large corporations in the social and political, as well as economic, institutions of the society serves as an impetus for the analysis of the structures and processes designed to control corporate activities. The structural and bureaucratic impediments to these control mechanisms are illustrated in the Ford Pinto case. The activities of the Ford Motor Company, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, …

The Demographic Characteristics Of Homicide Victims In Riverside County Between 1975 And 1979, Audrey Pamela Kyte-Griffith
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This study focuses on the dynamics of victimization. It looks at the encounter between criminal and victim in an opposite direction from what is customary, dealing not with the perpetrator but the victim.
The victims studied in this research were 295 people who were the subjects of homicidal assaults in Riverside County between January, 1975 and December, 1979. The details of their deaths were gathered from records in the Coroner's office at Riverside, and 29 variables were selected for analysis.
The subjects included 231 males and 63 females, 228 of whom were Caucasians, 38 Blacks, 24 Mexicans, 4 American Indians, …

The Dreaming And The Doing: Utopian Foundations Of Social Action, William Demaria
The Dreaming And The Doing: Utopian Foundations Of Social Action, William Demaria
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The article is interested in a conceptual clarification of social action. A tripartite model of social action is presented which attempts to focus on the complex relationship between utopianism and action (the dreaming and the doing). The article then poses the question: What social action options are available to the critical consciousness? Two are considered, one active and one passive. Activism and passivism are seen on a continuum, rather than as a polarity. Passivism is seen as a latent form of activism. The role of activist is seen as either maintaining activism or realising its passive form. Sociological perspectives are …
