When The Bombs Drop: Reactions To Disconfirmed Prophecy In A Millennial Sect, Robert W. Balch, Gwen Farnsworth, Sue Wilkins Apr 1983

When The Bombs Drop: Reactions To Disconfirmed Prophecy In A Millennial Sect, Robert W. Balch, Gwen Farnsworth, Sue Wilkins

Sociology Faculty Publications

This article reports the results of an ethnographic study of a millennial Baha'i sect whose leader predicted that the world would be devastated by nuclear war on April 29, 1980. Shortly before that date we began a participant-observer study of the sect, and during the following eight months we supplemented our observations by interviewing members and defectors in the four states where the group's leader had a substantial following. The purpose of the investigation was to replicate the classic study of disconfirmed prophecy reported in When Prophecy Fails by Festinger, Riecken, and Schachter. They found that prophetic disconfirmation was followed …

The Creationist Movement: Science, Religion And Ideology, George M. Bevins Apr 1983

The Creationist Movement: Science, Religion And Ideology, George M. Bevins

Masters Theses

A sample of literature produced by participants in the "creationist movement" is examined in an effort to delineate the ideology of the movement. This ideology is seen as a repertoire of images of science, evolution and society which is used by creationists in their efforts to propagate their movement. Based on this literature, an "ideological substructure of belief" within the creationist movement is described, consisting of their belief in a created normative order in the world and of their fear that this order is breaking down. It is argued that the various particular aspects of the creationists' social ideology, their …

A Comparison Of Social Service Workers' And The Public's Views Of Nursing Home Characteristics, Lucinda Lee Roff

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Using the determinant attribute model, this study examined and compared the criteria which 277 social service workers and 842 members of a general population would employ in selecting a nursing home. The results suggested substantial differences between the two groups in selection criteria. Implications of these results and of the use of the determinant attribute model as an aid to practice are discussed.

The Quality Of Public Education In Boston: An Assessment And Some Recommendations, Karen Seashore Louis Feb 1983

The Quality Of Public Education In Boston: An Assessment And Some Recommendations, Karen Seashore Louis

Center for Survey Research Publications

Motivation, self-esteem, achievement and the development of tolerance and acceptance of others -- these are the goals that most, like Crain, et al., have come to accept as legitimate objectives of public schooling. Yet, there is substantial opinion that the public schools of Boston have been unable to achieve standards in these areas that are acceptable to the public, the students who occupy the schools, and the professionals who run them. For example, a recent survey of Boston residents' attitudes toward the schools indicates that approximately 3/4 of all respondents -- irrespective of race, or whether there were any school …

The Vanguard (Vol. 30, No. 6), Sep-Oct 1983, Lutheran Human Relations Association Of America

The Vanguard

Dr. Bernard Lafayette, an associate of the Martin Luther King Center for Nonviolent Social Change in Atlanta, Georgia, celebrated the effectiveness of nonviolence in addressing social injustices during a speech to the 1983 Lutheran Human Relations Institute.

Dr. Lafayette, reading the address originally scheduled to be presented by Coretta Scott King, reaffirmed the effectiveness of nonviolence in the 1980s.

Mrs. King was unable to appear at the Institute because of the illness of her mother. Dr. Lafayette was a colleague of Martin Luther King Jr., and a coordinator of the August 27, 20th Anniversary March on Washington, D.C.

"It's a time to experience· friendship and fellowship," said Ted Gleiter, LHRAA Board member, as he discussed the August 26th gathering in Washington, DC to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Lutheran Human Relations.

Gleiter, and Richard Fox, Jr., co-organizers of the event, are making plans to CELEBRATE THE STRUGGLE at First Trinity Lutheran Church in the Capital.

Gleiter said he hoped that all the Lutherans planning to attend the August 27th March on Washington for "Jobs, Peace and Freedom'' would also come the evening before to First Trinity to coordinate a visible Lutheran presence at the Saturday march.

Citing a variety of activities with individual Indian groups on and off the reservation, and involvement with national Indian organizations, Paul Schultz, President of the National Indian Lutheran Board (NILB) summarized a sampling of involvements by staff, resource persons and board members by saying:

"While we still attempt to address areas of extreme human need through our modest grants program, it has become even more important to invest greater amounts of time and effort in networking with organizations within the church, such as the Office of Governmental Affairs, as well as a number of other state, regional and national organizations …

Alternatives To Animal Experimentation, Steven M. Niemi Jan 1983

Alternatives To Animal Experimentation, Steven M. Niemi

Experimentation Collection

Alternatives to animal experimentation are highly touted today by animal welfare advocates. Their campaign for adoption of alternatives has caused much discussion and debate within and outside of the biomedical community. The purpose of this paper was to examine the controversy and assess the more common alternatives, including the bacterial mutagenicity assay or Ames test, cell culture, and mathematical models for toxicity prediction. Safety testing of chemicals is the most promising of the fields for alternatives where laboratory animals are used, and incorporation of alternatives with live-animal assays is increasing. However, due to limitations of alternatives in use currently, there …

Critique [Of Economic And Psychic Exploitation Of American Indians], Dennis Stewart Jan 1983

Critique [Of Economic And Psychic Exploitation Of American Indians], Dennis Stewart

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Perhaps the most valuable contribution that Professors Bataille's and Silet’s treatise makes is to connect the images of the American Indian in movies with antecedent images. The scope of their investigation predates Columbus, includes critical American historical imagery production, takes the reader to the very beginnings of the movie industry, and brings us up-to-date on the effects of the "Great Society" outfalls for both image. and employment of American Indians in the screen entertainment establishment.

Establishing The Essential Building Blocks For Understanding Collective Behavior, Janet L. Heitgerd Jan 1983

Establishing The Essential Building Blocks For Understanding Collective Behavior, Janet L. Heitgerd

Masters Theses

It has been argued by researchers that collective behavior, as a field of study in sociology, lacks important theoretical and methodological developments. This has resulted in limited empirical knowledge of collective behavior. There exist many inadequacies in our present theoretical development. These include a failure to not only specify a social dimension of collective behavior, but also, to separate cause and effect, and to describe collective behavior. Scholars have argued that in the study of collective behavior, we are lacking sound, theoretical perspectives and definitions of collective behavior, which have resulted in poor and unsystematic observations of phenomena.

We asked discussants for the 1983 Conference to summarize their responses to the papers in their sessions, and Stewart Rodnon of Rider College provided a statement which comments specifically on the session for which he was discussant and summarizes the significance of many of the papers delivered at the 1983 Conference. His comments serve as a meaningful preface to these abstracts.

Economic And Psychic Exploitation Of American Indians, Gretchen M. Bataille, Charles L.P. Silet Jan 1983

Economic And Psychic Exploitation Of American Indians, Gretchen M. Bataille, Charles L.P. Silet

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Two general points can be made about Euroamerican exploitation of American Indians: first, whatever level of exploitation they have experienced by the motion picture industry, it is part of a long tradition which dates back to the earliest contacts between white Europeans and Indians; and second, that the exploitation has taken on two forms-economic and psychic. Just how Indians have been taken advantage of economically is relatively clear. Euroamerican history texts happily record the ways in which the native inhabitants of the American shores were bilked, with the $24 worth of beads, for Manhatten [Manhattan] Island and with equally inequitable …
