[Review Of] Ruth Kirk. Tradition And Change On The Northwest Coast: The Makah,Nuu-Chah-Nulth, Southern Kwakiutl, And Nuxalt, David M. Gradwohl Jan 1989

[Review Of] Ruth Kirk. Tradition And Change On The Northwest Coast: The Makah,Nuu-Chah-Nulth, Southern Kwakiutl, And Nuxalt, David M. Gradwohl

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Much has been written about the traditional social organization, art, and technology of the Northwest Coast Indians whose settlements stretch from the state of Washington, through British Columbia, and into southern Alaska. In this volume, writer-photographer Ruth Kirk summarizes the historic and present-day culture of four native groups in the southern part of this region: the Makah, Southern Kwakiutl, and people who call themselves Nuu-chah-nulth and Nuxalk. Until recently, the latter two groups were referred to, respectively, as the Nootka and the Bella Coola. Kirk's task, undertaken with the sponsorship of the Royal British Columbia Museum, was to update information …

[Review Of] Major J. Jones. The Color Of God: The Concept Of God In Afro-American Religious Thought, Ivan Ainyette Jan 1989

[Review Of] Major J. Jones. The Color Of God: The Concept Of God In Afro-American Religious Thought, Ivan Ainyette

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Covering the period from the beginning of slavery in America and up to the present, this important and powerful book demonstrates the necessity for a black theology. Major Jones provides an incisive analysis of each entity of the Godhead-God, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit and relates it to the oppressed African-American. Drawing on his own impressions and the findings of many other theologians, Major Jones has provided an informed up-to-date basis for black Christianity. This book is an excellent synthesis of the paucity of research on African-American theology. However, the book does not appear to meet one of its …

[Review Of] Milton Murayama. All I Asking For Is My Body, S. E. Solberg Jan 1989

[Review Of] Milton Murayama. All I Asking For Is My Body, S. E. Solberg

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

In little over a decade this short novel has become a classic, developing a dedicated following, not only in Asian American communities and literature programs, but also in traditional literature programs alongside books such as Huckleberry Finn where the strategies are the same: the view of the world through the clear eye of youth, the puncturing of both pretense and pretension by the view from the bottom up.

What Is The Health Impact Of Day Care Attendance On Infants And Preschoolers?, Ruth L. Berkelman, Mary Guinan, Phen B. Thacker Jan 1989

What Is The Health Impact Of Day Care Attendance On Infants And Preschoolers?, Ruth L. Berkelman, Mary Guinan, Phen B. Thacker

School of Public Health Faculty Research

The impact of various child care arrangements on the health of infants and preschool children is not known in any systematic way, yet by 1990 more than 10 million of these children may be receiving their care in day care facilities (1). Concerns over the health of these children and health practices within day care facilities have already led some States to place regulation of day care facilities under the jurisdiction of the department of health (2,3), and others are presently considering such legislation. In addition, the American Academy of Pediatrics has recently published "Health in Day Care," a manual …

The Therapeutic Community In A Psychiatric Facility: Does Clinical Sociology Have A Place?, Beverly Ann Cuthbertson Jan 1989

The Therapeutic Community In A Psychiatric Facility: Does Clinical Sociology Have A Place?, Beverly Ann Cuthbertson

Clinical Sociology Review

Clinical sociologists can play an important role in understanding and treating psychiatric disorders They can provide insight into the linguistic and emotional processes that form social psychological pathways to disorders; they can illuminate the sociocultural contexts from which certain disorders emerge and on which they have an impact; and they can facilitate individual and social change A permanent place for clinical sociology in the therapeutic community of a psychiatric facility will not be created, however, without the interdisciplinary adoption of a unifying conceptual framework in which biological, psychological, and sociological factors are defined as of potentially equal importance in the …

A House Divided Against Itself: A Comment On "Mastery, Slavery, And Emancipation", Kendall Thomas Jan 1989

A House Divided Against Itself: A Comment On "Mastery, Slavery, And Emancipation", Kendall Thomas

Faculty Scholarship

Hegel argues in the preface to the Philosophy of Right that "every individual is a child of his time; so philosophy too is its own time apprehended in thoughts." "It is just as absurd," he maintains, "to fancy [the German word is einbilden: imagine, presume] that a philosophy can transcend its contemporary world as it is to fancy that an individual can overleap his own age, jump over Rhodes." This is a hard saying. It suggests that " '[t]here is not one of our ideas or one of our reflexions which does not carry a date.' " The fact that …

Virginia Woolf's Double Discourse, Pamela L. Caughie Jan 1989

Virginia Woolf's Double Discourse, Pamela L. Caughie

English: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Written by a feminist (Virginia Woolf), for a bisexual (Vita Sackville-West), about an androgyne (Orlando), the novel Orlando would seem to be the quintessential feminist text. And that, indeed, is what it is in danger of becoming, just as Woolf is in danger of becoming the acclaimed Mother of Us All. In promoting Virginia Woolf's Orlando as a feminist work, feminist critics have picked the right text, but for the wrong reasons. Orlando works as a feminist text not because of what it says about sexual identity but because of what it manages not to say; not because of what …

Gay Masquerade: Male Homosexuals In American Cities, 1910 To 1940, Steven L. Lewis Dec 1988

Gay Masquerade: Male Homosexuals In American Cities, 1910 To 1940, Steven L. Lewis

Masters Theses

Prior to 1900, American scientists struggled to formulate a sexual norm. Their categorization of sexuality ironically led to the creation of a label (homosexual) by which individuals created and expressed a sexual identity at variance with the newly created norm.

By 1910, the climate of moral reform (Progressivism) led to the discovery (and documentation) of a homosexual subculture in larger American cities. With Chicago and New York City as examples, the author documents the growth of this sexual underground in the period between 1910 and 1940. Using primary sources such as diaries, letters, autobiographies and novels, the world of the …

From Scandinavia To America: Proceedings From A Conference Held At Gi. Holtegaard, Peter L. Petersen, Reviewer

The Bridge

In early September 1983, scholars from Denmark, Norway, Sweden and the United States gathered at Gammel Holtegaard, north of Copenhagen, for a three-day conference on Scandinavian emigration to the United States. Because a majority of the papers presented at the conference deal with elements of the Danish experience, readers of The Bridge should welcome this belated publication of the proceedings made possible by a grant from the Danish Research Council for the Humanities.
