Language Abilities Of Male Adolescents In A Juvenile Detention Center, Krista J. Klein
Language Abilities Of Male Adolescents In A Juvenile Detention Center, Krista J. Klein
Masters Theses
This study was designed to analyze the language abilities of male adolescents with delinquent behavior. It was based on the hypothesis that male adolescents with delinquent behavior would have lower language skills during expressive language tasks. Language skills of male adolescents in a juvenile detention center were examined by comparing 12 grammatical variables, four subtest scores, and one total score from the Screening Test for Adolescent Language (STAL; Prather, Ausdal-Breecher, Stafford & Wallace, 1980). Results indicated that the adolescents with delinquent behavior omitted significantly more words, but also produced significantly more secondary verbs in a narration task. Significantly lower results …
Attributions For Change In Attitude Among Urban Elementary Parochial School Teachers Toward Children Who Speak Nonstandard English, Charles A. Saglio Jr.
Attributions For Change In Attitude Among Urban Elementary Parochial School Teachers Toward Children Who Speak Nonstandard English, Charles A. Saglio Jr.
Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education
A comparatively large number of African American children fail in urban schools. Hundreds of research studies concerning interpersonal expectations suggest a link between teacher expectancies and pupil performance. Researchers have found that teachers expect less of students who speak nonstandard English. Attempts to modify teachers' culturo-linguistic attitudes and expectations have been unsuccessful. While teachers' beliefs, theories, and attitudes change over time as a function of teaching experience, the mechanisms for change are unclear.
This study has attempted to uncover events to which teachers attribute a change in their culturo-linguistic attitudes. Once causal conditions for change have been identified, then those …
Beyond Sugar And Spice: Labeling Female Genitalia, Ethel E. Hellman
Beyond Sugar And Spice: Labeling Female Genitalia, Ethel E. Hellman
Institute for the Humanities Theses
Previous studies have indicated that, in our culture, female genitalia are unlabeled, mis-labeled, and/or negatively labeled, while male genitalia are not.
Twenty-five mothers of young children were interviewed to determine what labels they were teaching their children for sexual body parts. The women later met in small groups to discuss the i r reactions to a soft-sculpture of female genitalia.
The study found that twice as many male children were taught common designations for their own genitalia than were female children. In addition, a greater proportion of female children were given a label for male genitalia, than male children were …

Beyond An Underclass: An Essay On Up-Front Politics, Paula L. Dressel, Jeff Porterfield
Beyond An Underclass: An Essay On Up-Front Politics, Paula L. Dressel, Jeff Porterfield
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Debate about underclass conceptualization has once again forced sociologists to acknowledge the political context and implications of our work. This article extends the critical examination of underclass conceptualization to relatively undeveloped but politically important areas of concern. Initially we discuss the political economic context of conceptual controversies surrounding poverty. With a preference for structural analysis, we call for the return of class to economically marginalized people and suggest how that goal might be enhanced by a focus on relations of distribution as well as production. Valuing subjects' vantage points, we recommend how sociologists' work can return agency and diversity to …
Theory And The Generation And Subversion Of Knowledge, Dennis Saleebey
Theory And The Generation And Subversion Of Knowledge, Dennis Saleebey
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
This essay is an argument for the refurbishing of theoretical thinking in social work. In particular, the author calls for the infusion of generative as opposed to normative theory in the profession. Only generative theory has been proven to invigorate the thinking and doing of professional social workers.

[Review Of] Jose Luis Colon-Santiago. La Primera Vez Que Yo Vi El Paraiso, Luis L. Pinto
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Written reminiscences have taken the form of a literary subgenre and are very popular among Puerto Rican writers residing in the United States. This literary form not only is an integral part of a serious body of literature in Puerto Rican letters, but in most cases, constitutes the first step taken by many of our writers. Such is the case of Colon-Santiago's first narrative experiment: La Primera Vez Que Yo Vi El Paraiso (The First Time I Saw Paradise).

Review Essay: "Arthur M. Schlesinger's Vision Of America And The Multicultural Debate" By Jesse M. Vazquez, Jesse M. Vazquez
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
In April of 1990, Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr., published an essay in the Wall Street Journal entitled "When Ethnic Studies are Un-American."[1] The publication of that article followed, by about eight months, the release of New York State's Department of Education's now controversial report -- "A Curriculum of Inclusion."[2] Interestingly, the publication of The Disuniting of America: Reflections on a Multicultural Society also follows, by about seven months, the release of New York State's second and most current Education Department report calling for the development of a new multicultural social studies curriculum -- One Nation, Many Peoples: A Declaration of …

A New Look At The Old "Race" Language: Rethinking "Race" And Exclusion In Social Policy, Chorswang Ngin
A New Look At The Old "Race" Language: Rethinking "Race" And Exclusion In Social Policy, Chorswang Ngin
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
This essay is an examination of the use of the notion “race" current in American social science literature and public discourse. It argues that the current assumptions of “race" are mistaken and lead to misunderstanding and misdirected social policy. A rethinking of the notions of “race" requires making a paradigmatic shift of the old categories of “race" and “race relations" to a new language that rejects “race" as a descriptive and an analytical category. It examines the processes through which “racist" social policies are enacted against Asian immigrants in contemporary Southern California.
Language Policy And Language Repression: The Case Of Spanish Basques And Mexican Americans, Deborah Faltis
Language Policy And Language Repression: The Case Of Spanish Basques And Mexican Americans, Deborah Faltis
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
This paper presents the argument that there are many similarities between the linguistic and cultural repression experienced by Basques in Spain and Mexican Americans in the United States. Linguistic and cultural repression, both historically and currently, is analyzed in terms of various language policies, especially those policies related to language use in school. The struggle for and importance of bilingual education for language and cultural maintenance is discussed. The paper concludes with the caution that the rise of conservative political groups such as The English Only Movement demonstrates that concern about linguistic and cultural repression is as imperative currently as …

Challenging College Students' Assumptions About Community Service Tutoring, Jodi L. Borstein
Challenging College Students' Assumptions About Community Service Tutoring, Jodi L. Borstein
Higher Education
Many adults view community service as a wonderful idea that college students should want to do-or be required to do-as part of their education; yet few have asked why students volunteer for community service. Policymakers and education reformers see student involvement as a way for students to give back to their communities while attending higher education institutions. More than 1,700 tutoring or mentoring programs for at-risk youth are currently operating in institutions of higher education across the country (Tierney & Branch, 1992, p. 1).
