History Of The Prison Library At The Iowa Women's Reformatory, Cathy Charleston

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this study was to present a history of the Women's State Reformatory Library at Rockwell City, Iowa. Primary and secondary resources were obtained through 1) personal interviews with past and present employees, and administrative personnel associated with the library, 2) past records at the Reformatory and at the Iowa State Library, 3) periodicals newspapers, and annual reports …

Critique [Of Concept Of Shame And The Mental Health Of Pacific Asian Americans], Helen Maclam

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Masayuki Sato's article Concept of Shame and the Mental Health of Pacific Asian Americans serves the vital function of raising issues as the necessary first step in seeking answers. Sato has convincingly related some attributes of Pacific Asian Americans (eg., high scholastic achievement, low utilization of mental health services and underemployment) to the need to avoid shame or "save face."

A Comparative Perspective On The Status Attainment Process Of White And Native American Youth, Leonard R. Decker Jan 1980

A Comparative Perspective On The Status Attainment Process Of White And Native American Youth, Leonard R. Decker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Status attainment, as commonly indicated by levels of educational and occupational achievement, is a complicated process. A variety of variables have been found to be quite influential in the determination of one's eventual position in the social hierarchy of American society. Research done jointly by William H. Sewell and Robert M. Hauser (1972, 1975) regarding the status attainment process has resulted in a Wisconsin model of Adolescent Achievement in which the authors have identified a number of experiences that have significant import for young people's post-high school educational and occupational attainments. The Sewell and Hauser model links socioeconomic origins and …

The second purpose of this study, to be discussed partially in the next chapter of this report, was to determine the vocational education needs and the continuing education interests of the respondents in these samples.

Concept Of Shame And The Mental Health Of Pacific Asian Americans, Masayuki Sato Jan 1980

Concept Of Shame And The Mental Health Of Pacific Asian Americans, Masayuki Sato

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

One priority of the Health Task group of the Conference on Pacific and Asian American Families (1978) was the need for research into the psychological and emotional problems of Pacific and Asian American (PAA) groups and their possible remedies. Specifically, the report identified the importance of shame in the education and socialization process of PAA families in controlling behavior. As a cultural characteristic among PAAs, shame or “saving face” remains an important concept to the individual, the family, the community, and to the racial group as a whole.

Abstracts Of Papers Presented At The 8th Annual Conference On Ethnic And Minority Studies

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

On November 10, 1939 at Benedict College, a black institution in Columbia, black South Carolinians met to organize a state unit of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored Poeple [People] (NAACP). The main objective of the new organization, the South Carolina Conference of NAACP, was to create an effective instrument to be used for propaganda, fund-raising and litigation purposes, and to function as a united front in the struggle to reclaim the ballot. From the outset, the State Conference sought to create a mass-supported organization. Membership drives were initiated to enlarge the existing branches and to set up …

One Decade And The Politics Of Ethnic Studies: Focus For The Future, Charles C. Irby Jan 1980

One Decade And The Politics Of Ethnic Studies: Focus For The Future, Charles C. Irby

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

The first decade of coloured ethnic studies has passed quietly. This uncelebrated passing is probably more related to what did not occur in conceptual, methodological, and theoretical developments during the ten-year period than what did, in fact, happen. The decade can be characterized as one in which the ethnic studies movement suffered from intellectual dropsy. The politics of ethnic studies are all of those activities which have served to restrict its development.

Market Women's Cooperatives: Giving Women Credit, Judith Bruce Jan 1980

Market Women's Cooperatives: Giving Women Credit, Judith Bruce

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

In 1972, the Nicaraguan Foundation for Development (Fundación Nicaraguense de Desarrollo—FUNDE), one of two programs sponsored by the Nicaraguan Institute of Development, became aware of market women's need for credit. This issue of SEEDS describes FUNDE's experience in developing savings and loan cooperatives to meet this need. This summary stresses the human aspects of the process as much as the financial and technical ones. The project has been successful because the cooperatives have built upon the existing market women's culture, utilizing all the subtle and complex interpersonal relationships established over the years. In essence what the cooperatives have done is …

The Michigan School Board Member, Delegate Or Trustee? : His/Her Personal Characteristics And Attitudes Toward Current Educational Concerns, Frederick J. Schmidt

Dissertations

Problem. There were two main purposes associated with this study. The first purpose was to develop a demographic profile giving a number of personal characteristics of the citizens who serve as school board members. There was a two-way cross-analysis made of many of the personal characteristics to determine any significant relationship. The second purpose was to determine how Michigan school board members rank eighteen current educational concerns. A two-way cross-analysis was made between the ranking given by various sub-groups of board members (example: the ranking of the concerns by males and females) to determine if there was a significant relationship …

Historic Trends In The Delivery Of Services To Teenage Parents, Nancy Aries Jan 1980

Historic Trends In The Delivery Of Services To Teenage Parents, Nancy Aries

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This paper will examine the political, social, and economic factors which underlie the transition in services from unwed mothers to teenage parents over the past 15 years. The experience of agencies in the Boston area serves as the basis for this case study. Data have been collected from open-ended interviews with key service providers who have developed and implemented policy related to adolescent parents.

The findings indicate that, prior to 1960, agencies were responding to what was perceived as individual problems or circumstances. Illegitimacy was thought to be an unconscious attempt by white middle class women to fulfill psychological needs. …

The State Of Black Omaha 1980, Center For Public Affairs Research (Cpar) Jan 1980

The State Of Black Omaha 1980, Center For Public Affairs Research (Cpar)

Publications

In early 1978, the Urban League of Nebraska published a report designed to measure the status of Blacks in housing, employment, education, health care and political participation. At that time, Blacks in Omaha were found to be deficient in all the above areas in relation to the general community. Today, in early 1980, the basic facts of that report have not significantly changed. Blacks are still almost exclusively concentrated east of 48th Street with most of them having a median income just under 1 half that of the Omaha average of $16,000. Official figures indicate that while Black unemployment has …
