Intellectual Violence, Democratic Legitimation, And The War Over The Family, Michael R. Hill Jan 1985

Intellectual Violence, Democratic Legitimation, And The War Over The Family, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

This paper presents a view of democratically rationalized repression as a framework within which to discuss Brigitte Berger and Peter L. Berger's recent anti-feminist, bourgeois apologetic: The War over the Family: Capturing the Middle Ground. The Bergers' book is presented as an example of intellectual violence, a ruthless attempt to legitimate continuing patriarchal dominance through perverted appeals to "democracy" and democratic principles of fairness and consensus.

Premarital Preparation : An Educational Content Design For Seventh-Day Adventists In The United States, Roger H. Ferris

Dissertations

Problem. The church participates in the marriage process by providing its facilities, performing the ceremony, and establishing marriage supportive norms. Increasing divorce rates produce calls for premarital preparationefforts by the church. It was the purpose of the present study to develop a validated educational content design for Seventh-day Adventists useful to the church in preparing couples for marriage.

Clinical Sociology And The Acculturation Specialty, Fred Hoffman Jan 1985

Clinical Sociology And The Acculturation Specialty, Fred Hoffman

Clinical Sociology Review

The sudden arrival of 125,000 Cuban refugees created the need for "acculturation specialists" who could ease the transition of these Hispanic refugees, many of whom suffered from mental disabilities or other stigmas. From the perspective of clinical sociology, acculturation should involve "empowerment " Culture brokers will encounter service dilemmas, factors which contravene the humanistic goal of empowerment of members of a psychiatric population. What course is proper when empowerment of a client might subvert program goals? Should concise information on the welfare system be provided to clients who might use it to abscond and establish another pattern of dependency? Should …

Clinical Sociology Review

This paper explores the interpenetration of clinical and research interviewing processes in research interviews The data are interviews with 17 women diagnosed as schizophrenic, and with their husbands, over the period 1957-1961. The interviewers, as they had been trained to do, attempted to …

Intergroup Relations In Applied Research: Respondent Participation As A Clinical Intervention, Thomas A. Leitko

Clinical Sociology Review

Little attention has been paid to the clinical aspects of relationships between groups involved in applied research. This article reports on how naturally appearing community groups with a vested interest in the outcome of a research study were involved in the research, thus strengthening their own sense of involvement At the same time, the willingness of the researchers to involve community groups in an open process strengthened the research

Societal Influences On Sexual Dysfunctions: The Clinical Sociologist As Sex Educator, Abraham D. Lavender Jan 1985

Societal Influences On Sexual Dysfunctions: The Clinical Sociologist As Sex Educator, Abraham D. Lavender

Clinical Sociology Review

The traditional psychoanalytic approach to sexual dysfunctions deemphasizes societal factors as contributing to sexual dysfunctions The new approach to sex therapy, which has developed since 1970, emphasizes a diversity of factors, including societal factors. Sex education—following sex therapy—has now begun to recognize the area of sexual dysfunctions as a valid topic. Knowledge and understanding of the societal factors which directly or indirectly contribute to sexual dysfunctions can help people to change or better react to these factors. The clinical sociologist as a sex educator can and should make a major contribution to the prevention and correction of sexual dysfunctions.

A Philosophical Taxonomy Of The Major Correctional Perspectives: Toward A New Approach In Criminal Justice, Steven Jay Cuvelier

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Since the repudiation of the rehabilitation ideal in the mid 1970s a considerable body of literature has developed in which the social purpose and goal of American corrections are debated. While much attention has been given to the policy issues surrounding the various correctional approaches, the author notes that little attention has been paid to the philosophical foundations upon which these perspectives are based. Chapter 1 traces the development of correctional ideology from its beginning to the present crises. An overview of the current problems faced by corrections is given, focusing upon the lack of conceptual clarity in the criminal …

"Xenophobia, the hatred of the foreigner, is spreading in Europe. Dear friends, the 'hideous beast' is rising again among us, and, as before, governments are being weak and not combating this climate of hate. What starts with xenophobia ends with war.''

So said Bruno Kreisky, former chancellor of Austria, on the 46th anniversary of "Kristall Nacht," November 10, 1984, at Dachau in the Federal Republic of Germany.

Defense lawyers in the trial of 11 Sanctuary church workers who were indicted by the U.S. government for their work in sheltering refugees from Guatemala and El Salvador are pressing motions to dismiss the case on the basis of selective prosecution.

The trial began in mid-November in Tucson, Ariz., after a lengthy period of pre-trial hearings which focused on jury selection and on various motions for dismissal by the defense. Defense arguments were largely turned down by Judge Earl Carroll.

Effect Of Father-Presence And Father-Absence On The Self-Concept Of Black Males In Special Education And Regular Education Classes, Queen Esther Woodard Dec 1984

Effect Of Father-Presence And Father-Absence On The Self-Concept Of Black Males In Special Education And Regular Education Classes, Queen Esther Woodard

Dissertations

This study compared the self-concept of Black males residing in father-present and father-absent low socioeconomic status homes, who were between the ages of 8-12, and who were enrolled in emotionally impaired, or regular education classes. Literature indicated that since 1970, the number of children reared in one-parent homes has increased by over 60%, with over 90% of these children living with their mothers. This changing lifestyle has prompted researchers to investigate the effects of father-absence on children; especially on boys.

It was hypothesized that self-concept would be influenced by father status, chronological age, and class placement. These three independent variables …

Hunger Strikes And The State's Right To "Force Feed": Recent Australian Experience, Mark Findlay Dec 1984

Hunger Strikes And The State's Right To "Force Feed": Recent Australian Experience, Mark Findlay

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Whether or not it is the nature of the protest itself which makes it unsuitable for resolution in a court-room situation, the case law relating to "hunger strikes" (and State's response) is both sparse and insignificant. Perhaps on the basis of its uniqueness alone, the case of Schneidas v. Corrective Services Commission(New South Wales) and Others should be of particular interest to jurists on both sides of the Irish border.
