Critique [Of Chicano Ethnicity And Aging By Marvin A. Lewis], Ron Striano
Critique [Of Chicano Ethnicity And Aging By Marvin A. Lewis], Ron Striano
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
Art serves the societal functions of recording, interpreting and predicting. Here, analysis of popular archetypes in Chicano fiction and poetry are used to illustrate cultural values toward the elderly and conflicts of values between generations of Chicanos. This leads to an examination of how Chicano values differ from Anglo-American values toward the elderly. The author demonstrates the problems of acculturation, blending into and enriching another culture while retaining a sense of one's own culture, versus assimilation, abandoning one's own heritage and taking on the values of another culture. In the latter, upward mobility striving by younger Chicanos creates a chasm …

A.K.A. Pablo: Mexican American Images For Television, Norman L. Friedman
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
The study of "minority group images in mass media" has been of considerable interest both to humanities and social science writers in the ethnic and media fields. Most investigations have focused upon the descriptive content of the minority portrayals, though a few have also dealt with related aspects of minority group reactions to images. Among the large volume of varied writings have been those which have considered minority group images in films, [1] images of Asian Americans in print and electronic media, [2] dissections of single television shows about minorities, [3] and responses of minority audiences and media critics to …
Depictions Of Elderly Blacks In American Literature, Alice A. Deck
Depictions Of Elderly Blacks In American Literature, Alice A. Deck
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
Portraits of elderly Afroamerican men and women abound in American literature and vary from stories which present a mythic primordial character who symbolizes emotional stability, experiential wisdom and a community's cultural and historical heritage, to works in slice-of-life realistic style which dramatize the social and psychological conditions of aged blacks. Included in this second category are works which show the confrontation between old and new social standards. Coupled with this range of portraits is a variety of attitudes toward elderly blacks.

Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Puerto Ricans have been writing about their experiences in the mainland for a very long time. At the beginning, the majority of the texts were written in Spanish by Puerto Rican writers residing in this country or by Puerto Rican writers who lived here for periods of time. A careful study of the works published about the life of Puerto Ricans in the mainland shows that they were written in prose.

The Demography Of New England: Policy Issues For The Balance Of This Century, George S. Masnick
The Demography Of New England: Policy Issues For The Balance Of This Century, George S. Masnick
New England Journal of Public Policy
New England's rapidly aging population, its traditionally low fertility rate, and the fact that net migration from other regions and abroad should continue to be close to zero means that only very slow population growth will characterize the region for the balance of this century. Nevertheless, New England's demographic metabolism is exceptionally dynamic: (1) the numbers of different age groups are growing at very different rates; (2) a redistribution of population is occurring from the southern to northern tier states; (3) within each state population is dispersing into non-metropolitan areas; and (4) metropolitan areas, both central and suburban, are quickly …

Sociotherapy With Marital Couples: Incorporating Dramaturgical And Social Construction Elements Of Marital Interaction, Nathan Church
Sociotherapy With Marital Couples: Incorporating Dramaturgical And Social Construction Elements Of Marital Interaction, Nathan Church
Clinical Sociology Review
This article represents an exercise in the translation of accepted sociological concepts into specific principles to be included in a larger framework referred to as sociotherapy. Sociotherapy is presented as a specific branch or subfield of clinical sociology. Although the concepts presented may be generalized to other areas of sociotherapy, the specific focus of the paper is sociotherapy with marital couples. Two dynamics involved in marital conflict and dissolution are described by employing the social constructionist position of Berger and Luckmann and the dramaturgical perspective of Goffman. The process by which couples jointly construct their marital world of reality is …

A Survey Of Interdisciplinary Differences In Attitudes And Morale Within A Psychiatric Hospital, Brian F. Hoffman, Valerie P. Hans
A Survey Of Interdisciplinary Differences In Attitudes And Morale Within A Psychiatric Hospital, Brian F. Hoffman, Valerie P. Hans
Cornell Law Faculty Publications
It is clear from a number of research studies that staff attitudes and morale in psychiatric hospitals are influenced by diverse factors. Although staff morale has been studied in several health and human service organizations, there have been few systematic studies of the professional staff in a psychiatric hospital. In particular, little attention has been paid to the effect staff members’ disciplinary affiliations have on their morale and attitudes. The effects of staff members’ dual allegiances (to their discipline and to their interdisciplinary unit) have also not been examined. Conflict may develop in psychiatric hospitals because members of different disciplines …

Special Topics, General
This society's adolescent and elderly populations share many needs and characteristics. Both often have little access to meaningful social roles. For example, neither is likely to be fully integrated into the work force and, consequently, both groups tend to have high rates of unemployment (Pearl, 1978; Sheppard, 1976). Moreover, their family roles tend to be in transition. Teenagers are ·in the process of gaining independence from their parents while many older adults face changes such as the loss of a spouse or decreased family power relative to their middle-aged children. The lack of meaningful social roles has been blamed for …

This issue of Review of Applied Urban Research features "Soroban to Silicon Chip: A Look at Japanese Education," by Floyd T. Waterman.
During the 1982-83 school year, the U.S . Department of Education released the report of the President's Commission on Excellence in Education. The report concluded that American education had deteriorated until there was "A Nation at Risk." The writer had also taken note of the fact that on international comparisons, American students were far behind Japanese in the areas of mathematics and in the sciences. He therefore decided to go to Japan and study their educational system. The …

The Spanish University: An Analysis Of The Relationship Between Institutional And Political Change, Julia A. Nichols
Honors Papers
The purpose of this paper is to reveal the nature of institutional adaptation of the University within the context of the political upheavals in twentieth-century Spain. I will focus on the changing structure of the University under the Republican era, the Franco years, and the present democracy. Elements within this changing educational structure suggest an ideal typology, a hypothetical university which manages to rise above its role as a mere function of the social milieu. By contrast, the reality of the University as an institution controlled by political regimes is evident throughout the paper. The contention herein is that among …
