Society And Self: A Symbolic Interactionist Framework For Sociological Practice, Janet Mancini Billson
Society And Self: A Symbolic Interactionist Framework For Sociological Practice, Janet Mancini Billson
Clinical Sociology Review
Interactionist concepts and explanations of human behavior prevalent among major psychological theory groups are traced in relationship to the symbolic interactionist principles of emergence, voluntarism, and process. I argue that most theory central to psychology is interactionist in nature; that central tenets of symbolic interactionism are woven throughout psychological theory; and that the same interactionist premises can equally form the foundation for clinical sociology as a form of sociological practice.
Terminating Addiction Naturally: Post-Addict Identity And The Avoidance Of Treatment, William Cloud, Robert Granfield
Terminating Addiction Naturally: Post-Addict Identity And The Avoidance Of Treatment, William Cloud, Robert Granfield
Clinical Sociology Review
This paper examines the characteristics of alcoholics and drug addicts who terminate their addictions without the benefit of treatment. Using what is commonly referred to as "natural recovery" processes, respondents terminated their addictions without formal treatment or self-help group assistance. Data for this study are based on in-depth interviews with 25 alcoholics and drug addicts who were identified through snowball sampling techniques. First, we examine the postaddict identities of our respondents to see how they view themselves in relation to their addictive past. Next, we explore the reasons respondents gave for avoiding treatment and self-help groups. We then examine the …
Evaluation Research And The Psychiatric Hospital: Blending Management And Inquiry In Clinical Sociology, George W. Dowdall, Diana M. Pinchoff
Evaluation Research And The Psychiatric Hospital: Blending Management And Inquiry In Clinical Sociology, George W. Dowdall, Diana M. Pinchoff
Clinical Sociology Review
This paper discusses the multiple roles sociologists play in conducting evaluation research in a large state psychiatric hospital. The key to understanding this form of clinical sociology is its blending of management and inquiry in a unique organizational context. The authors, sociologists who have both served as directors of the Buffalo Psychiatric Center's program evaluation unit since its founding in 1979, present examples of the unit's work, discussing the role sociologists play in the collection, analysis and reporting of data used by hospital administrators for strategic planning, continuous quality improvement programs, and the monitoring of patterns and trends for census …
Health And Social Services, Formal Organizations, And The Mexican American Elderly, Norma Williams
Health And Social Services, Formal Organizations, And The Mexican American Elderly, Norma Williams
Clinical Sociology Review
Students of everyday life are making a significant contribution to understanding the manner in which persons carry out their daily activities. However, they have overlooked the impact of bureaucratic organizations on persons in various social settings. Based upon intensive in-depth interviews of sixty Mexican American elderly in Dallas, Texas, the research revealed numerous barriers to their utilization of health and social services and demonstrates why one must consider carefully how health and social service organizations affect the lives of elderly Mexican Americans. One must also recognize that the quality of life of Mexican American elders can be improved by increasing …
Field-Initiated Resarch To Predict Work-Motivation Among Navajo Vocational Rehabilitation Clients, Jennie R. Joe, Dorothy Lonewolf Miller
Field-Initiated Resarch To Predict Work-Motivation Among Navajo Vocational Rehabilitation Clients, Jennie R. Joe, Dorothy Lonewolf Miller
Clinical Sociology Review
This study presents the results of field-originated, field-based research on the Navajo reservation analyzing the motivation to succeed and the willingness to follow through of Native American clients in vocational rehabilitation (VR) programs. The study was divided into two components: 1) Socio-cultural differences between employed and unemployed Navajo reservation dwellers were analyzed and a number of statistically significant variables were found that correlated with successful employment. 2) These findings were then tested with an intensive case study of one "successful" Navajo VR client and one "unsuccessful" Navajo VR client. Interviews with these VR clients highlighted and verified the usefulness of …

Kendal At Oberlin: An Examination Of Desires, Expectations, And Concerns Of Residents And Management And Staff In The Formation And Development Of A New Continuing Care Retirement Community, Megan A. Schulte
Honors Papers
Due to changing demographics in the United States' elderly population, adequate senior housing is becoming a major concern for an increasing number of Americans. Issues and concerns of housing are related to a multitude of issues surrounding aging including the retention of one's independence and adaptation to age-related changes, the physical, the cognitive, the environmental. One of the most recent developments in senior housing is the continuing care retirement community (CCRC). This research focuses on Kendal at Oberlin, a newly constructed CCRC in Oberlin, Ohio.
Methodologically, data were gathered with resident-targeted and management and staff-targeted surveys. Research goals include delineating resident …
'Environment' As A Social Concern: Democratising Public Arenas In Singapore?, Lily Kong
'Environment' As A Social Concern: Democratising Public Arenas In Singapore?, Lily Kong
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
This paper explores the question of who defines the agenda of environmental concerns in Singapore. It argues that the state plays an inordinately large role in defining the agenda and implementing the solutions. Few other competing environmental agendas have been set in alternative public arenas. While this has worked generally well in Singapore, there are larger roles for environmental groups, businesses and industries, and other bodies to play. It is in the enlarged roles of these bodies that the hope for a greater democratization of public arenas in Singapore lies.

A Study Of Men In Non-Traditional Male Occupations, Fiona Raewyn Kelly
A Study Of Men In Non-Traditional Male Occupations, Fiona Raewyn Kelly
Theses : Honours
In the past the majority of occupations were very clearly divided into 'men's work' and 'women's work' and such attitudes persist today. The man who crosses over into an occupation traditionally considered to be a female occupation upsets society's gender assumptions. Some research indicates that there are many advantages for these men; others have found that it is a difficult transition creating many problems for the men involved, one of the most significant being the persistent questioning of their sexual orientation. This research takes a close look at the experiences of four men in non-traditional male occupations. The subjects studied …
Intercountry Adoptive Families In Western Australia: The Well-Being Of Their Four To Sixteen-Year-Old Adoptees, Trudy Rosenwald
Intercountry Adoptive Families In Western Australia: The Well-Being Of Their Four To Sixteen-Year-Old Adoptees, Trudy Rosenwald
Theses : Honours
The study investigated the well-being of 283 four to sixteen-year-old intercountry adopted (ICA) children in general and in relation to two specific adoption variables. The sample represented 80% of the estimated 4-16 year old ICA population of Western Australia (W A). Well-being was defined in terms of competence, happiness, health and problem behaviours. The primary source of information was Achenbach's parent reported Child Behavior Check List (CBCL) as used by the Western Australian Child Health Survey (WACHS). Bowlby's attachment theory provided the theoretical framework for the prediction that adoption after the age of 6 months, and the experience of adversity …
Mothers' Labour Force Participation Decisions And Child Care Provision In Australia, Gary Sherry
Mothers' Labour Force Participation Decisions And Child Care Provision In Australia, Gary Sherry
Theses : Honours
Public subsidisation of child care has increased steadily over it's 20 year history, corresponding with increases in the rate of labour force participation of mothers. This research seeks to determine if labour force participation is driven by provision of child care or if the supply of child care is driven by demand of Mothers participating in the labour force. Much of the Australian research of mothers' labour force participation does not take account for the provision or use of child care, yet all find the presence of children in the family as having a major impact on the labour force …
Do Women Retire? : A Feminist Critique Of The Social Construction Of Retirement, Pamela Weatherill
Do Women Retire? : A Feminist Critique Of The Social Construction Of Retirement, Pamela Weatherill
Theses : Honours
This research comes as a response to the paucity of discussion on women's experience of retirement. In consideration of the relationship between work and retirement, this study examines what a feminist perspective on women's experience of work can contribute to the androcentric conception of retirement. Women's experience of work is shaped by many forces, most particularly by the ideology of motherhood and the sexual division of labour. Together, these factors have ensured that women and men experience both paid and unpaid work in quantitatively and qualitatively different manners. While the construction of retirement has been around the largely male experience …
Issues That Concern Prison Officers About Hiv Positive Prisoners In Western Australia, David Francis Cain
Issues That Concern Prison Officers About Hiv Positive Prisoners In Western Australia, David Francis Cain
Theses : Honours
In 1988 the Department of Corrective Services established an AIDS Standing Committee to draw up an HIV positive/AIDS policy. The Committee consists of ten members, two of whom are union members who represent the issues that concern 1,227 prison officers statewide. The Policy which was issued in 1989 medically isolated HIV positive prisoners from the mainstream prison population. The aim of this research is to identify and quantify the issues that concern prison officers about HIV positive prisoners in Western Australia. Such information will act as a medium through which these will be communicated to the AIDS Standing Committee. Structured …
Benefits Of Formal Mentoring, Kimberly Hein Hutzell
Benefits Of Formal Mentoring, Kimberly Hein Hutzell
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The development of capable and result-oriented employees is of critical necessity in the business world. During a period of cutbacks and mergers, as well as demanding work schedules and skill qualifications, corporations must identify methods of support and training which not only maintain, but increase and maximize production levels of employees. One method to address these conditions is formal mentoring. Formal mentoring is a deliberate job training partnership which seeks to increase employee performance as well as improve an organization's competitiveness. While this form of experiential learning has a history in the education sector, it has been introduced and implemented …
A Study Of Participants' Experience Of Yirra : An Adolescent Treatment Program, Bethany F. Byatt
A Study Of Participants' Experience Of Yirra : An Adolescent Treatment Program, Bethany F. Byatt
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Yirra is a residential treatment program for young people who are experiencing problems associated with their substance use. The design of this program was influenced both by consultation with other youth services, and by current literature and theories regarding the most effective approaches to delivery of youth substance use services. Yirra has been in operation since February, 1992, and to date has not been formally evaluated. This research represents the first stage of evaluation of Yirra. The Phenomenological approach to enquiry was aimed at gaining some understanding of the experience of being at Yirra, from the perspective of the young …
A Qualitative Evaluation Of A Bereavement Service: An Analysis Of The Experiences Of Service Consumers And Providers, Ruth Marquis
A Qualitative Evaluation Of A Bereavement Service: An Analysis Of The Experiences Of Service Consumers And Providers, Ruth Marquis
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Human service evaluation has become an important consideration in service delivery due to an increased demand for accountability by funding bodies. Time constraints, financial constraints and political interests, however, influence the implementation and outcomes of evaluation projects. As a result, quantitative methods are most frequently used. Information obtained as the result of quantitative studies which are politically expedient may present a superficial view of a program and overlook the fundamental issues of program delivery which are important to participants. Identification of the valued aspects of program involvement and areas of unmet need from participants' perspectives may remain unknown as a …

African-American Males In Prison: Are They Doing Time Or Is The Time Doing Them?, Anthony E. O. King
African-American Males In Prison: Are They Doing Time Or Is The Time Doing Them?, Anthony E. O. King
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
African-American males comprise a disproportionate percentage of the individuals imprisoned in State correctional institutions across the United States. The purpose of this paper is to describe how incarceration affects African-American males. The author recommends more rigorous and systematic analysis of the prison experience, and how it affects the mental, physical, and social well-being of African-American males. Given this nation's commitment to using imprisonment as the principal means for punishing convicted felons, it is imperative that society ascertain the social, psychological, and economic effects of such confinement on millions of African-American males.
The Occurrence Of Alexithymia In Children And Adolescents With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Michael S. Routh
The Occurrence Of Alexithymia In Children And Adolescents With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Michael S. Routh
Graduate Theses
Previous studies of the relationship between alexithymia and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have utilized samples of combat veterans with PTSD. However, children and adolescents who have experienced trauma and are diagnosed with PTSD exhibit similar or identical symptomology. The current study examined alexithymia in a sample of children and adolescents diagnosed with PTSD. It was hypothesized that the sample, when compared to non-PTSD and control samples, would reveal a significantly greater severity of alexithymia and PTSD. Although overall results were not consistent with previous research, trends of group means supported a relationship between alexithymia and PTSD. 1

Assassination In Modern America: Political Participation Through A Gun Barrel?, Richard Grossenbacher
Assassination In Modern America: Political Participation Through A Gun Barrel?, Richard Grossenbacher
Masters Theses
Assassination has been a constant companion of the world's societies from the beginning of recorded history. Only relatively recently have social scientists begun empirical study of these acts in an effort to reveal any commonalties and possible predictive traits. Investigation of the assassination phenomenon assumed a special urgency in America as violence seemed to escalate in the 1960s, which resulted in some notable research.
The present research collected data of presidential and non-presidential assassinations and attempts that occurred from 1969 through 1992 and compared the findings with the results of earlier studies.
The data indicate that presidential assaults increased in …
A Comparative Study Of Primary Preventive Behaviors And Secondary Preventive Behaviors Among Michigan Adults, Jing Chang
A Comparative Study Of Primary Preventive Behaviors And Secondary Preventive Behaviors Among Michigan Adults, Jing Chang
Dissertations
Many researchers have documented the range and extent of the health preventive behaviors. However, previous studies have generally focused on either the contact with medical professionals (secondary preventive care) or compliance with their recommendations (primary preventive care). Some have treated the two types of behaviors as one and related them to social demographic characteristics and socio-structural conditions (e.g., access to medical service). There have been very few studies that have compared the two sets of preventive behaviors. This study takes a first step to explore the correlates of secondary preventive activities and compare them with the correlates of primary preventive …
Adolescent Substance Use Patterns: Testing A Multidimensional Sociogenic Model, Eric O. Johnson
Adolescent Substance Use Patterns: Testing A Multidimensional Sociogenic Model, Eric O. Johnson
Dissertations
This dissertation begins with the understanding that behavior is a product of a variegated and complex web of social factors. Bringing this approach to the subfield of adolescent substance use, both substance use itself (alcohol, cigarettes and a broad range of illicit drugs) and the factors that influence such use are viewed as existing within the complex of demographic/structural, social contextual, attitudinal, and behavioral layers of adolescents' social worlds.
The Patterns of Adolescent Substance Use Typology, developed by Stanley S. Robin and me (1992a), is used to categories the overall level and kind of substance use, over time, that adolescents …

The Dual Face Of Empowerment: A Model For Cooperative Resource Building, Eric C. Albers, Nancy Paolini
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Homelessness among families with children has become a nationwide problem. Although homelessness is difficult to document, it is estimated that approximately 250,000 to 3,000,000 people in the United States are homeless. Families, which comprise approximately one third of the homeless population, is its fastest growing segment (Mihaly, 1991; National Coalition for the Homeless, 1989; Van Vliet, 1989). This may be a conservative figure. Some of these families often go uncounted because they are part of the "invisible" homeless. They avoid agency contact for fear of losing their children or live in motels, cars, or campgrounds and thereby are not counted …
Neighborhood-Based Initiative To Address Poverty: Lessons From Experience, Robert Halpern
Neighborhood-Based Initiative To Address Poverty: Lessons From Experience, Robert Halpern
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The neighborhood has long been an important locus for efforts to address the causes and consequences of poverty in American society. Over the course of the past century neighborhood- based initiatives have been called on to reduce class conflict, counter feelings of alienation, localize control of social institutions, create jobs and reverse neighborhood economic decline, improve human services, and address a variety of specific poverty-related problems, ranging from infant mortality to juvenile delinquency. In this essay I draw on the historical experience with neighborhood initiative to illuminate its strengths and limitations as a strategy for addressing poverty and its correlates. …
