Thailand's Never-Ending Pesticide Debate: Contested Future Sociotechnical Imaginaries Through A Relational Co-Productionist Lens, Henriette Erawan Kamphorst
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Since the introduction of the Green Revolution, the use of agrochemicals in Thai farming has sparked repeated contentious debates among local policy elites, addressing issues such as consumer health, farmer livelihoods, and environmental degradation. In 2019, this subject re-emerged on the policy agenda with the proposed ban of three key agrochemicals: Chlorpyrifos, Paraquat, and Glyphosate. In order to understand why the pesticide issue has remained on policy actors’ agendas for so long and still continues to be subject to ongoing debate, this research takes on a new perspective by adopting a relational co-productionist approach in the construction of contesting sociotechnical …

From Climate Perception To Climate Action: Case Study Of Transforming Sustainable Rice Cultivation In Doembang Subdistrict, Suphan Buri Province, Thailand, Chotika Thamsuwan
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The thesis explores the critical link between climate perception and sustainable rice cultivation practices. The study highlights the vulnerability of the agricultural sector, particularly rice farming, to climate impacts and emphasizes the necessity of transitioning to sustainable practices as part of Thailand’s broader goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030. Employing the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) as the analytical framework, this qualitative research explores how smallholder farmers in the Doem Bang subdistrict conceptualize climate change and sustainable rice cultivation. The study investigates the socio-psychological determinants—behavioral attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control—that shape farmers’ intentions and …

Risk Perceptions Of Coffee Growers In Northern Thailand: A Case Study Of Chiang Rai Province, Melody Sie
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Thailand's coffee sector faces numerous risks, impacting coffee farmers' livelihoods. This study explores risk perception and management strategies through in-depth interviews with coffee farmers based in Chiang Rai province. Drawing from Joy Harwood’s categorization of agricultural risk, the risks assessed in this study fell under the domains of production, market, and institutional risks. Farmers' perceptions of these risks were analyzed by considering the mental strategies and biases (heuristics) that shaped their perceptions, as well as how farmers measured risk according to their risk attributes (frequency, severity, adaptation ability). The values, emotions, and experiences of farmers shape the foreground of farmers' …

Approaches To Charitable Giving And Perceptions Of Organizational Effectiveness Among Midlevel Donors, Cal J. Halvorsen, Johanna Lynch, Sylvia Brown, Melissa L. Mcternan
Harvey A. Friedman Center for Aging
For decades, scholars have devoted attention to identifying the giving habits of charitable donors, yet the behaviors of midlevel donors have not been independently considered. This study examined midlevel donors’ approaches to charitable giving and the extent to which they give to effective organizations. Operationalized as giving between $2,000 and $20,000 annually, we analyzed descriptive statistics and multivariate probit models of 1,260 midlevel donors using a novel study. We found that respondents were least likely to engage in ad-hoc giving and most likely to give to organizations due to personal connections or prior research. However, while caring about a cause …

Three Essays On Digital Health: Online Communication, Health Information Seeking, Complementary Medicine Use Among Older Adults And Vulnerable Populations, Daria Turavinina
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Through three empirical essays, this work explored how information and communication technology (ICT) use shapes population health behaviors and outcomes, with a particular focus on older adults. The first essay critically investigated whether online communication can serve as a substitute for in-person social contact in mitigating loneliness among late middle-aged and older persons. The study finds that while excessive reliance on digital interaction correlated with higher loneliness in the general older adult population, it could potentially serve a protective function for those in poor health by reducing social isolation. The second essay investigated how online health information seeking behavior and …

Exploring Utilization Patterns Of Thailand's Three Main Public Health Insurance Scheme Beneficiaries, Pakhun Angsupan
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The three main public health insurance schemes in Thailand include the Universal Coverage Scheme (UCS), the Social Security Scheme (SSS), and the Civil Servant Medical Benefit Scheme (CSMBS), which the schemes cover approximately 97% of the population. However, a number of individuals reported not having utilized the schemes during their last visit to a medical facility. Non-utilization of free healthcare raises a question regarding the ability to access and utilize public health insurance schemes and whether or not they are able to appropriately provide horizontal equity. The aim of this study is to examine the influence of demographic and health-related …

Social Acceptance, Well-Being, And The Desire To Start A Family Of Lgbtq+ People In Thailand, Wirunphat Manitsorasak
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Despite Thailand’s image as a “living paradise” for LGBTQ+ individuals, empirical research on social acceptance and family formation remains limited. Public discourse has questioned whether the growing visibility of LGBTQ+ populations may contribute to the national fertility decline. Given this context, this study focuses on LGBTQ+ individuals and explores three dimensions: (1) societal tolerance toward LGBTIQAN+ individuals and sexual diversity, (2) public attitudes toward LGBTIQAN+ parenting, and (3) the well-being and family formation intentions of LGBTQ+ individuals. Employing a quantitative approach, the study draws on two data sources: (1) secondary data from three waves of the World Values Survey (2007, …

Beyond The ‘Boy Crisis’: Reframing Gender Performativity In Belgian Classrooms, Marjolein Vanmaercke
Beyond The ‘Boy Crisis’: Reframing Gender Performativity In Belgian Classrooms, Marjolein Vanmaercke
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This thesis challenges the dominant discourse surrounding the so-called "boy crisis" in education by critically examining gender performativity in Belgian classrooms. Rather than accepting the narrative that boys are inherently disadvantaged in contemporary schooling, this study interrogates how gender is constructed and performed within educational settings. Drawing on Judith Butler’s theory of performativity, the research explores how teachers, curricula, and peer interactions contribute to the reinforcement or subversion of traditional gender norms. Using qualitative methods, including classroom observations and interviews with educators and students, the study highlights the ways in which gendered expectations shape students' educational experiences and outcomes. The …

Access Of Thai Language And The Social Integration Of Shan Migrants In Chiang Mai, Thailand, Nan Tharaphi Aye Lwin
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This thesis examines how access to Thai language education influences the social integration of Shan migrants in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Grounded in the 4A Rights-Based Framework (Availability, Accessibility, Acceptability, Adaptability) and Bosswick and Heckmann’s social integration model, the study employs a primarily qualitative approach complemented with mini survey data, migrant case studies, and key informant interviews with educators and CSO leaders. Findings reveal that no single program fully embodies all four components of the 4A Framework. CSO-led programs tend to offer more culturally responsive, flexible, and beginner-friendly learning environments, while formal state-run programs often require prior literacy and are less …

Socioeconomic Endurance During The Post-Coup Conflict: A Case Study Of A Community In Mandalay Region, Central Myanmar, Htet Yamone Win
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Myanmar’s post-coup context has severely affected the local communities through the ongoing multiple crises in governance, livelihoods, and security matters. Myanmar military’s attempt to coup in 2021 triggered widespread resistance, including both non-violence and armed-resistance strategies, and led to sharp economic decline and public service disruptions. Those crises have been reshaping everyone’s daily life in Myanmar. While the much of existing literature focuses on those who have fled the country, this study centers on the experiences of individuals and communities who remain in the country, embracing the direct impact of political repression, economic instability and social fragmentation. Focusing on a …
