A Sociological Consideration Of Pretense, John F. Else Aug 1969

A Sociological Consideration Of Pretense, John F. Else

Student Work

Few, if any, persons pass through a day without observing and engaging in some form of pretense. Pretense is a basic aspect of interpersonal relations. In an office or factory the supervisor tells the worker to ’’look busy" even when he does not have work to do. The salesman tries to make the customer feel as if the item being presented is the best buy ever placed on the market. Two people meet and exchange “PIeased to meet you!" when neither actually cares at all about the presence of the other; in fact, each may have negative feelings about meeting …

In 1942, the Navy Department constructed a Naval Supply Depot at Clearfield, Utah. The northern part of Davis County was still in the grips of the Depression of the 1930's. Therefore, the Public Housing Administration constructed a temporary housing unit of cinderblocks under the authorization of the Lehman Act of 1940 for those who came to the Clearfield area for employment. It was named Anchorage. In 1955, the Federal Government sold Anchorage to Clearfield City for $20,451.70.

Clearfield City hired a crew of three men to maintain the project. The maintenance of the project slowly deteriorated through the years. Major …

A difference was found between the rural and the urban groups regarding their expressed attitudes concerning natural resource development, use, and control. Differences between the rural and the urban groups were also found in regard to attitudes toward the political institution. No significant differences were found regarding the attitudes …

The Effects Of The Psycho-Social Need For Security On Irrigation Farmers' Behavior And Cognition Related To Water Resources, Dennis Call Geertsen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The findings of this study indicated, contrary to expectations, that irrigation farmers who expressed needs for water did not engage in certain types of goal-oriented behavior designed to resolve those needs any more so than did those who did not express these needs. There were four measures of goal-orientation which included: Attendance at meetings about the Bear River Project, actively seeking information about said Project and positive attitude toward development of the Bear River.

There were significant relationships, however, between expressed water needs and worries over the water supply, the experiencing of human problems related to water use and perceived …

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

From 1865 until 1871 the Territory of Utah was the scene of a little-known war. The Ute and Piute Indians responding to pressure of white settlers devastated much of Utah south of Spanish Fork. During the first three years of warfare the Mormon Settlements south of the Utah Valley struggled to exist. The next three years saw improving conditions but a continuation of raids by the Navaho in the south.

This was a private war. Attempts to get government aid were futile. The settlers and the Mormon Church provided the men and equipment necessary. While the problems faced by the …

The Attitudes Of Logan City, Utah Toward Ethnic Minority Groups With Special Emphasis On The Negro, Ella D. Lewis Douglas

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

One major purpose of the research conducted by human relations agencies has been to determine the correlates of prejudice. The analysis of data has persistently aimed at identifying those groups within the population among whom the incidence of prejudice is higher. If such groups can be identified, programs to reduce prejudice can be designed especially for them. However, there is a strong feeling in the American society that certain groups, in the population are congenitally inferior to others. These are the ethnic minority groups, such as the Negro, the Spanish-American, the Oriental, the Jew, and the American Indian. Such a …
