Human Nature And The Integration Of Faith And Reason, Bradley Kime Apr 2024

Human Nature And The Integration Of Faith And Reason, Bradley Kime

The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing

In his 1838 Divinity School address, Ralph Waldo Emerson said that "every man is an inlet into the deeps of Reason." Heavily influenced by Hindu Monism, Emerson believed human beings were one with the universal soul the immanent divinity of the natural universe. Because of humanity's divine nature, Emerson saw reason as an intuitive revelation springing from within every individual, while faith was simply a recognition of one's innate intuition. Faith and reason were two sides of the same coin. Emerson's Transcendentalism illustrates how conceptions of faith, reason, and their relationship often rest on underlying beliefs about human nature.

Creative Expression And Documentation: The Who, How, And Why Of Journaling, Cylia Srmek

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

Processes of utilizing methods of creative expression and individuals’ documentations has been studied as a way to promote individual voice and identity, particularly in the contexts of educational and healthcare settings, as well as online spaces. However, studies on interventions of crafting one’s story and understanding the experiences of others have implied that these settings have often failed those that they serve by presenting limited ideas on what expression can look like. Through a series of ten qualitative interviews and a collection of personal journal entries from Valparaiso University students, this project furthers the notion that having the tools to …

Professionals, Not Laborers: Historical Contingencies Impacting Faculty Prestige And Unionization, Camden M. Webb Apr 2024

Professionals, Not Laborers: Historical Contingencies Impacting Faculty Prestige And Unionization, Camden M. Webb

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Some higher education faculty believe that unionization is beneath their status, despite lacking ownership of the means of production. While higher education experienced increasing importance in the United States during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, faculty unionization saw periods of both growth and decline. From a macro-level framework in social structures of accumulation (SSA) theory, with additions from Marx, the Ehrenreichs, Bourdieu, and Simmel, my research develops a theory to explain the impact of changing social structures on status reproduction and faculty unionization. SSA theory explores the historical contingencies that impact relationships between institutions and capital accumulation. Marx’s class relationships, …

Calafate Zoológicos Humanos, Hans Mülchi Bremer, Latin American And Iberian Institute Apr 2024

Calafate Zoológicos Humanos, Hans Mülchi Bremer, Latin American And Iberian Institute

LAII Events

Toward the end of the 19th century, 25 people from four different Chilean indigenous groups were kidnapped from Tierra del Fuego and Patagonia by a German businessman and taken to Europe to be exhibited as attractions in cities throughout the continent. THE HUMAN ZOO uncovers the history of this colonial spectacle, and follows the fallout into the present.

With Chilean historian Christian Baez, director Hans Mülchi Bremer contacts these native people’s descendants, and traces their voyage from South America across Europe, paying particular attention to the fate of Calafate, a Selk’nam boy who was taken when he was just 9 …

Worldviews Impacting Leadership Within U.S. National Security: Christianity Vs Secularism, Remy Goldsmith Apr 2024

Worldviews Impacting Leadership Within U.S. National Security: Christianity Vs Secularism, Remy Goldsmith

Helm's School of Government Conference - 2021-2024

Worldviews influence and impact all aspects of life. This is because the way one chooses to see the world affects the decisions one chooses to make. Whether choosing a job, a religion, or a partner, all are affected by one’s worldview. This is also because worldview is where virtues derive from. The establishment of virtue is the cornerstone of building character and developing ethics. In other words, it forms the moral compass that an individual uses to base their decisions. As that stands, this means that worldviews and virtues are applicable and impactful toward leadership and decision-making within national security. …

Witches On The Wind: Weather Magic In New England Folktales, Zephyros Quinn Craven Apr 2024

Witches On The Wind: Weather Magic In New England Folktales, Zephyros Quinn Craven

Thinking Matters Symposium

The English language folktales collected from coastal New England in the 19th and 20th centuries display a prominence of weather magic motifs compared with folktales from other regions of the United States. This paper aims to explain the success of the weather magic theme in New England folklore collections and to serve as a starting point for scholarly discourse on the subject, which has hitherto been sparse. This study utilizes climate research, both scholarly and popular collections of folktales, local travel guides, and colonial and labor histories. Through a combination of historical analysis, comparative study, and textual analysis, …

Social Justice With Children's Literature, Victoria Bradford Apr 2024

Social Justice With Children's Literature, Victoria Bradford

Thinking Matters Symposium

An increase in refugee children arriving in the United States is driving innovation in elementary education strategies that focus on the role of children’s attitudes and behaviors concerning inclusivity to cultivate warm regard for refugees and immigrants. In 2017, anti-immigrant sentiments rose sharply alongside waves of nationalism reinforcing ethnic divisions across America, negatively impacting children of color who were frequently told, "go back to where you came from," even if they were born in the United States. Multicultural children's literature, in which commonalities between diverse characters are emphasized, is considered an effective way to expose children to other cultures, thereby …

Theater and Dance Presentations

This project works to theatrically represent the current state of Artificial Intelligence (AI), as well as its benefits and drawbacks, in the style of the Living Newspaper. Originating from a Great Depression-era job program, the Living Newspaper sought to take headlines and present them onstage for a poignant and contemporary social critique. This work does the same, melding different angles of the AI debate into a single production that emphasizes the rapidly progressing state of modern AI technology and the need for humans to consider the impacts such technologies will have. Furthermore, it asks the audience to question their position …

Mass Capture Fishing In The Marquesas Islands, Reno Nims, Patricia Pillay, Melinda S. Allen Apr 2024

Mass Capture Fishing In The Marquesas Islands, Reno Nims, Patricia Pillay, Melinda S. Allen

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Mass capture of small fishes with a variety of nets, traps, and weirs was widely practiced and economically important across East Polynesia at western contact. Archaeological research, however, has suggested these technologies were less important during the early settlement period and gained prominence over time. Several explanations have been proposed, including resource depression, changes in marine environments, and/or social and economic reorientations. In the Marquesas Islands, pelagic and offshore fishes were historically well represented in early assemblages relative to most Polynesian islands. Here we report on fishbone assemblages from Nuku Hiva Island that were recovered with fine mesh screens, identified …

Politics And Gender In Meskwaki Tribal Membership, Lily Gooding Apr 2024

Politics And Gender In Meskwaki Tribal Membership, Lily Gooding

Student Academic Conference

Early observations (1600s-1800s) concerning the Meshkwaki, a Central Algonquian Indigenous group of the Western Great Lakes and eastern Prairies of the United States, emphasized the perceived primary role of patri-based institutions. This attention was echoed by the anthropologists of the late 1800s and early 1900s, who prioritized and described the role and purpose of patrilineal descent. In 1937 the US Government and its supporters forced the Meshkwaki to adopt a tribal constitution which included the abandonment of their traditional leadership structure and the introduction of patrilineal descent for tribal membership. This poster will begin by contextualizing patri-based institutions within pre-1937 …

Water Quality Analysis Of Red River Valley's Municipal And Rural Water Supply: A Collaboration Between Local High School Science Classes And Geosciences At Msum, Abigail Von Bank, Reed Wilke, Ally Peters Apr 2024

Water Quality Analysis Of Red River Valley's Municipal And Rural Water Supply: A Collaboration Between Local High School Science Classes And Geosciences At Msum, Abigail Von Bank, Reed Wilke, Ally Peters

Student Academic Conference

Declining water quality is an environmental issue that has been around for decades now. As pipes decay and waterways become more polluted, these pollutants are becoming more present in water. This region, unlike other places, does not have a problem with water scarcity, but water quality is increasingly problematic. We are focusing on the study, collection, and analysis of Fargo, Moorhead, and the Red River Valley's water quality throughout the community. This project is a collaboration with local high school students by engaging in modern environmental dilemmas all while creating an in-depth analysis of the water samples taken to see …

An Investigation Of Bone Preservation As A Result Of Environmental And Cultural Variables In Mortuary Contexts, Adyn Hallahan Apr 2024

An Investigation Of Bone Preservation As A Result Of Environmental And Cultural Variables In Mortuary Contexts, Adyn Hallahan

Honors Theses

Stable isotope analysis in bioarchaeology of human bone is generally used to reconstruct diet or migratory patterns of certain populations. Although this type of analysis is now standard practice, little research has been done regarding how cultural and mortuary practices may affect chemical composition of bone. This study aims to determine whether different simulated mortuary contexts have an effect on stable isotope levels in bone, using seven pig rib bone samples as proxy for human bone. In addition, macroscopic and microscopic observations are used to assess preservation and taphonomic processes. One of the samples served as a control, not being …

Blissful (Dis)Comfort, Mei Kiengsiri Apr 2024

Blissful (Dis)Comfort, Mei Kiengsiri

Theses

From personal anecdotes and past experiences, “Blissful (Dis)comfort” confronts, celebrates, and humorizes my Thai culture and family dynamics through light, sound, and the subversion of everyday objects. This thesis explores the personal, intimate, and even vulnerable sides of my childhood and personal relationships, as well as their reflections on technical challenges and solutions to everyday electronic devices. The body of work rejects the expectations of cause and effect, logical consequences, and reactions, blending in the child-like sense of wonder, discovery, and play with more complex themes of nostalgia and family.
