Interpersonal Aggression: Assertion Of Significant Reality Hypothesis, Dwight Alan Drury Jan 1981

Interpersonal Aggression: Assertion Of Significant Reality Hypothesis, Dwight Alan Drury

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Interpersonal aggression is analyzed with the use of the symbolic interactionist perspective in this thesis. The literature generally lacks such an analysis. Symbolic interactionism views individuals as active definers and constructors of a reality. Individuals gain a sense of reality and the means by which to define it through the process of being socialized into various groups. That part of reality which is most important to the individual is termed "significant reality." A major part of an individual's "significant reality" is his or her self-concept. When an individual deems his or her "significant reality" is threatened, he or she may …

Purposive Social Change And Interorganizational Networks: The Case Of Three Prepaid Health Programs, Gale Miller, Charles K. Warriner Sep 1980

Purposive Social Change And Interorganizational Networks: The Case Of Three Prepaid Health Programs, Gale Miller, Charles K. Warriner

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

An important perspective emerging in the areas of community and organizational analysis is the political economy approach to interorganizational relations. This approach treats organizations as seekers of basic political and economic resources which are found in their environments. This approach has special implications for persons interested in the study and/or .implementation of programs of change, because it sensitizes the observer to the problems of political and economic conflict in interorganizational relations. The perspective also offers useful insights into the development of. intervention strategies that minimize the conflicts often associated with social change. In order to demonstrate the usefulness of this …

An Analysis Of The Attitudes Of Unlicensed Personnel In San Bernardino Metropolitan Area Convalescent Hospitals Toward Their Jobs And The Geriatric Patients, Theodore G. Sneed Jun 1980

An Analysis Of The Attitudes Of Unlicensed Personnel In San Bernardino Metropolitan Area Convalescent Hospitals Toward Their Jobs And The Geriatric Patients, Theodore G. Sneed

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

In American society, convalescent facility residency is a fact of life for many of the aged. Typically, in these geriatric facilities, eighty to ninety percent of primary patient care services are delivered by unlicensed personnel. Unfortunately, this segment of the convalescent facility employee population tends to be transient, underpaid and overworked, and to feel very low esteem for themselves and their jobs. This situation has produced many service abuses and interaction difficulties in the convalescent facilities. Up until the present there has been little attempt on the part of Sociology to study this portion of the employee population in these …

Grandfather: An Intergenerational View, Norma P. Johnston

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this study was to examine the role of grandfather in the lives of his adolescent grandchildren. A survey design was used to (1) obtain demographic data, (2) determine how the two generations perceive each other, (3) identify the types and frequencies of interaction between grandfathers and their adolescent grandchildren, and (4) compare the conceptions of an ideal grandfather by the two classes of subjects. Data were gathered from 47 adolescents and their 61 grandfathers. Most of the subjects were from the dominant religion in the Wasatch front area.

The results confirm a viable adolescent grandchild/grandfather relationship. Residential …

Migrant-Nonmigrant Differentials, Housing Type, Community Satisfaction And Migration: A Study Of Nonmetropolitan Communities In Utah Within The Context Of Population Turnaround, Stephen Hua-Wah Kan May 1980

Migrant-Nonmigrant Differentials, Housing Type, Community Satisfaction And Migration: A Study Of Nonmetropolitan Communities In Utah Within The Context Of Population Turnaround, Stephen Hua-Wah Kan

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Three major socio-demographic aspects of community life were examined in nonmetropolitan Utah within the context of the post 1970's population turnaround. They are: differentials by migrant status and housing type, patterns of community satisfaction, and migration expectations and migration.

Findings indicate that groups of residents with different migrant status and/or housing type have unique patterns in socio-economic status, social integration and community attachment, and potential contributions to the community. It was argued that these phenomena can be largely explained by the exchange theory.

With respect to the pattern of community satisfaction, it was found that the mobile home dwellers' level …

An Assessment Of Faculty Understanding And Attitudes Toward General Education At Utah State University, Scott H. Gittins

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The data used for the following thesis were collected from tape-recorded interviews of a sample of U.S.U. faculty, and from a course evaluation list which each of these participating faculty members were asked to fill out. Thirty-six faculty members were selected for the in-depth interviews, which was slightly more than five percent of the faculty. The study was done in conjunction with the Provost's General Education Evaluation Committee, as part of a larger evaluation of general education at U.S.U. Thirty-four of the U.S.U. professors were interviewed and 28 of these completed the course evaluation lists.

This thesis evaluates faculty conceptualizations …

Benign Uses Of Wildlife, Victor B. Scheffer Jan 1980

Benign Uses Of Wildlife, Victor B. Scheffer

Conservation Collection

During the Age of Environmental Awareness, which dawned in the late 1960's, Americans turned to using wild animals more benignly (or in ways harmless both to individuals and populations) and less exploitatively. The evidence includes: new federal legislation reflecting a public shift toward benign uses, growth of interest in 'nongame' wildlife, growth of interest in wildlife watching (rate of increase in number of camera safaris estimated at 32% per annum in 7 recent years), growth in membership of animal-interest organizations (rate of increase estimated at 7.7% per annum in 15 recent years), and growth of interest in animal rights. Per …

The Psychological Relationship Between Dairy Cows And Dairy Cowmen And Its Implications For Animal Welfare, Martin F. Seabrook Jan 1980

The Psychological Relationship Between Dairy Cows And Dairy Cowmen And Its Implications For Animal Welfare, Martin F. Seabrook

Human and Animal Bonding Collection

While no one could ever say that the conditions for animals and people were ideal in the days of hand milking, the question of animal welfare was less pressing as man was at ease and in balance and harmony with nature. Only as units became larger, and machine milking took the place of the cowman's or dairy maid's hand, did we have to worry about whether man was exploiting this animal species.

Attitudes Of Secondary School Students In Israel Toward The Use Of Living Organisms In The Study Of Biology, Pinchas Tamir, Aliza Hamo Jan 1980

Attitudes Of Secondary School Students In Israel Toward The Use Of Living Organisms In The Study Of Biology, Pinchas Tamir, Aliza Hamo

Attitudes Towards Animals Collection

The study deals with attitudes and views of 456 Israeli students in grades 7, 9, and 11 regarding the use of living animals in research and biology instruction. It was found that most students are interested in studying Jive animals through direct observation and experiment and feel that this kind of learning is superior to learning from secondary sources. At the same time, however, most students exhibit concern for and affection toward living organisms in general and higher animals, especially pets and "beneficial" animals, in particular. The need to consider both sides of the issue is highlighted, and practical implications …

Cultural Ecology: A Brief Overview, Michael C. Gunn Jan 1980

Cultural Ecology: A Brief Overview, Michael C. Gunn

Nebraska Anthropologist

Cultural ecology is based on the interaction of culture, man and environment. To the understanding of this relationship the present paper discusses the origin and development of cultural ecology, the various applications and techniques of cultural ecology by the anthropological discipline, and finally, criticisms and future goals of an ecological anthropology.

Ecology is not an anthropological subdiscipline, nor is it even a standardized approach in anthropology. Ecology may be defined as the science dealing with the study of entire assemblages of living organisms and their physical milieus, which together constitute integrated systems. More simply, ecology is the study of the …

[Review Of] Barbara Myerhoff. Number Our Days, Michele Zak Jan 1980

[Review Of] Barbara Myerhoff. Number Our Days, Michele Zak

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Number Our Days had its genesis in a research project on ethnicity and again at the University of Southern California where author Barbara Myerhoff is chairman of the department of anthropology. Her study of a group of elderly Jews living on and around the beach in Venice, California and who were members of the Aliyah Senior Citizens' Center, was undertaken reluctantly after Professor Myerhoff encountered resistance among the elderly Chicanos she had intended to study. The study absorbed four years of her life and ended in this record of surpassing warmth and intelligence of the past and present of a …

The Demographic Characteristics Of 1860 New Ulm, Minnesota, Germans, John J. Hickey, Frederic R. Steinhauser Jan 1980

The Demographic Characteristics Of 1860 New Ulm, Minnesota, Germans, John J. Hickey, Frederic R. Steinhauser

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Demand for an increase in ethnically oriented course materials led to this study of the 1860 New Ulm (Minnesota) German community as an example of ethnic migration and community establishment. The New Ulm German community was defined for the purposes of this study as the 698 German-born adult migrants living in New Ulm and its functionally connected area in 1860. Detailed information concerning the specific places of origin, migratory routes and sequences of intervening stops, and organizational networks of support was collected. A series of maps and graphs represents the migration patterns.
