“4, 24”, And 4c”: The Shared Knowledge Of Hair Terminology And Cultural Pride Among Black Women., Aliya J. Claiborne

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

This paper aims to explain the significance of hairstyles and terms used by black women and seeks to explore how these choices can sway the negative perceptions about black womanhood. Past research has shown that what is “just hair” to others serves as a statement piece and an overall representation of black women. By observing and recording naturally occurring conversations in black hair salons and conducting interviews with black women, I investigated the following question: How do black women use specific terminology to discuss their hair while also constructing identity and reflecting on societal views? I conclude that black women’s …

The Question Of Design In The Context Of The First Australian Nations: Designing Reparations Through Decolonial Architecture, Eli Abamonte May 2024

The Question Of Design In The Context Of The First Australian Nations: Designing Reparations Through Decolonial Architecture, Eli Abamonte

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

Forget about tourist postcards and picture-perfect landscapes. Australia's true heart beats in the ancient stories of the Indigenous communities that tell them, their vibrant cultural tapestry woven beneath the surface. My research dives into this tapestry, not as an Architect with blueprints imposing my own vision, but as a student with an open ear and collaborative spirit. Australia’s vastness holds countless stories, but my research led me deep into the heart of East Arnhem Land, where ancient legends whisper in the wind and the Yolngu people dwell. Anthropologists like Bruno Descola shattered my singular view of the world, revealing a …

Shut Up And Dribble: The Political Contradictions Of Black Masculinity In Sports, Isaiah Rogers May 2024

Shut Up And Dribble: The Political Contradictions Of Black Masculinity In Sports, Isaiah Rogers

Master's Theses

"Shut Up and Dribble: The Political Contradictions of Black Masculinity in Sports" is a comprehensive analysis of literature and case studies that explore the regulation and representation of the black masculine body within sports. This thesis investigates three primary themes—sport, protest, and black masculinity—and seeks to uncover the evolution of various black masculine figures and their endeavors toward racial inclusivity. By analyzing sports literature, this work examines the experiences of five significant black athletes, including Jack Johnson, Ron Artest, and Colin Kaepernick, to illustrate how sports environments police the black body. Additionally, this thesis emphasizes two archetypes of black masculinity: …

“Haiti Is My Heart”: Exploring Return Migration Experiences Among The Haitian American Diaspora, Semline Singleton

Dissertations

The dissertation explored the return migration experiences among first- and second-generation Haitian diaspora members in the United States. The study aimed to fill gaps in the existing literature and provide a deeper understanding of the individual experience of return migration through a social and cultural lens. While previous research has focused on the political and economic aspects of return migration, this study examined the personal narratives of return migrants. It explored the causes, impacts, and individual experiences of return migration. To achieve the study's objectives, in-depth interviews were conducted with identified Haitian diaspora members who had returned to Haiti. The …

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

In 1974, Sue Herring described the relationship between two important performance variables in the feeding system, bite force and gape. These variables are inversely related, such that, without specific muscular adaptations, most animals cannot produce high bite forces at large gapes for a given sized muscle. Despite the importance of these variables for feeding biomechanics and functional ecology, the paucity of in vivo bite force data in primates has led to bite forces largely being estimated through ex vivo methods. Here, we quantify and compare in vivo bite forces and gapes with output from simulated musculoskeletal models in two craniofacially …

Political Consciousness & The Postcolonial Subject: Toward Revolutionary Education In Pakistan, Ali Mahboob May 2024

Political Consciousness & The Postcolonial Subject: Toward Revolutionary Education In Pakistan, Ali Mahboob

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

We live in a post-colonial reality. It is a fact of history. A past that determines the present, a present that determines the future. It is not the colonization of land that this project seeks to inquire about, but the colonization of knowledge, for what we know determines who we are. This thesis studies the relationship between the construction of the colonial self and the colonial reality from which it derives consciousness. It is an epistemological examination of a form of knowledge that presupposes the inferiority of the colonial being. This colonization of knowledge is the foundation of Western Humanism …

A Comprehensive Examination Of Historical Events Leading To Disinterment Practices And Repatriation Delays Involving The Muscogee (Creek) Nation And Etowah Mounds, With An Analysis Of The Vermillion Accord As A Framework For Assessing How Repatriation Is Hindered When Institutions Reject Indigenous ‘Respect’ Ideologies That Honor Ancestral Remains, Wendy Butts May 2024

A Comprehensive Examination Of Historical Events Leading To Disinterment Practices And Repatriation Delays Involving The Muscogee (Creek) Nation And Etowah Mounds, With An Analysis Of The Vermillion Accord As A Framework For Assessing How Repatriation Is Hindered When Institutions Reject Indigenous ‘Respect’ Ideologies That Honor Ancestral Remains, Wendy Butts

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The impetus for this dissertation was a meeting with several subject matter experts belonging to the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, who shared their interest in garnering enough public support to pressure eleven institutions into returning burial belongings disinterred from the Etowah Mounds. As such, the objective of this historical research was to support the Tribe’s goal by raising public awareness of their decades-long repatriation challenges. In order to accomplish that objective, as a backdrop, this dissertation undertook a comprehensive examination of pertinent pre- and post- contact events surrounding Muskogean-speaking people of the Southeast region, which provided context for why present-day descendants …

This paper aims to comprehensively examine and investigate the musical background of Chôros No. 10, "Rasga Coração" (Tear the Heart), by the Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos, focusing on its original version for orchestra and choir to the transcription for wind ensemble and choir. The Chôros series is a collective of 14 individual compositions in which only 12 were performed, and the last two, No. 13 and No. 14, being lost before their performance. The Chôros No. 10, composed in 1926, is considered Villa-Lobos' masterpiece, bringing classical music a combination of Brazilian culture with early 20th-century European compositional techniques. This project …

The Future Of Black Girlhood: Creative Expressions Of Black Girls' Imagination, Jamesha L. Hayes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Historically, opportunities have been limited for Black girls to share their girlhood experiences with mainstream society due to the lack of scholarship produced on Black girlhood. Additionally, there are limited narratives written by Black girls on their girlhood experiences. Therefore, the purpose of this qualitative study was to gather Black girls’ perspectives on Black girlhood through curated images of Black girlhood in the future. This study used two theoretical orientations: Black feminism and Black radical imagination. Both theories provided the study with the framework necessary to hear the girls’ unfiltered truths and provided the girls with methods to create future …

Eluding Caricature, Rafael Hernandez May 2024

Eluding Caricature, Rafael Hernandez

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

Caricature, defined as exaggeration by means of often ludicrous distortion of parts or characteristics, has taken over the outskirts of cities across the country of Mexico. A landscape once characterized by intelligible urban form, architectural diversity, and walkability has been exchanged for walled in developments so poorly designed Levittown appears bespoke in comparison. But why Caricature? Simply, new residential developments value the erosion of public space, contiguous grids, and manufactured reliance on the automobile that is supported with a myriad of ill understood urban design elements inspired by American suburban design. With exaggerated features such as cul de sacs, gated …

Redefining Quality To Center The Capabilities Of Young Children, Soyoung Park, Sunmin Lee, Nnenna Odim, Jennifer K. Adair

Occasional Paper Series

In this article, we offer a justice-centered approach to measuring and documenting instructional quality that counters traditional teacher evaluations models commonly used in states' Quality Rating Improvement Systems (QRIS). We tell the story of two early care and education practitioners - one teacher and one school leader - who participated in a professional development that focused on learning to observe young children in agentic contexts and finding more ways for young children to showcase, demonstrate, strengthen, or contribute their capabilities. Through these stories, we show how focusing on children's capabilities served to counter the reductionist, hierarchical, and dehumanizing approaches of …

Introduction: Reconceptualizing Quality Early Care And Education With Equity At The Center, Mark Nagasawa, Cristina Medellin-Paz

Occasional Paper Series

Issue 51 of the Bank Street Occasional Papers Series is a response to Gunilla Dahlberg, Peter Moss, and Alan Pence’s 25-year interrogation of the concept of quality in early childhood education (ECE) (Dahlberg et al., 1999, 2013, 2023). Their groundbreaking work has called early childhood educators to question deeply held assumptions about the universality of childhood and how these shape the standardization of practices in early childhood settings around the world. They have argued that the homogenization of ECE practices is a factoryization of early childhood that undermines cultural pluralism and the field’s equity aspirations. This raises an imperative to …

What Does Ubuntu Tell Us About What It Means To Be Human? A Journey Towards Ubuntu’S Theology And Anthropology, Jean D'Amour Dusengmuremyi May 2024

What Does Ubuntu Tell Us About What It Means To Be Human? A Journey Towards Ubuntu’S Theology And Anthropology, Jean D'Amour Dusengmuremyi

School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses

This paper explores the intersection between Ubuntu, contextual social anthropology, and some major topics of systematic theology. In particular, it develops an African model of personhood, making relationship and interdependence the primary constituents of what is human. If developed as a model for the unity and diversity of the Trinity, Ubuntu can help one see how being drawn into the Trinitarian communion could help combat the harmful effects of the modern notion of individualistic personhood by showing that the beauty of unity in diversity leads to greater flourishing of individuals and their communities.

Storytelling Through Silence, Karaline S. Kendzora May 2024

Storytelling Through Silence, Karaline S. Kendzora

Honors Theses

A few of the earliest forms of communication between people include talking, dancing, and singing. Storytelling is a popular art form of communication that is used to convey stories. Storytelling can be conveyed through talking, dancing, and singing. These stories can be told using spoken language to recall a specific event that happened and the emotions one felt during this event. According to the National Storytelling Network, storytelling is used to “encourage the active imagination of the listener” (2023). This means that a storyteller presents their story and the audience actively listens or watches to interpret its meaning. Typically, spoken …

Reimagining Constitutional Democracy For Human Flourishing: A Re-Reading Of Augustine’S Social Love, Ubuntu Ethics, And Cst For The Zambian, Boyd Kapyung Nyirenda May 2024

Reimagining Constitutional Democracy For Human Flourishing: A Re-Reading Of Augustine’S Social Love, Ubuntu Ethics, And Cst For The Zambian, Boyd Kapyung Nyirenda

Jesuit School of Theology Dissertations

Comparable to the person battered and left for dead and lying by the roadside, the poor in Zambia epitomized by the story of Regina Mukuka Nyirenda, a former civil servant, attest to the socioeconomic, political, and gender injustice ordinary suffer despite Zambia being a constitutional democracy and a Christian nation since 1991. Although, in theory, it ascribes to the dignity and rights of everyone without discriminating, the liberalist human rights regime (framework) underlying Zambia’s constitutional laws since colonialism promotes the flourishing of the elite neoliberalist class while perpetuating socioeconomic, political, and gender injustice. Conversely, it undermines the thriving of the …

The Lived Experience Of Patients In Feeling Empathy From Nurses When Receiving Care Via Telehealth, Donna L. Cutting May 2024

The Lived Experience Of Patients In Feeling Empathy From Nurses When Receiving Care Via Telehealth, Donna L. Cutting

Dissertations

With the increased use of telehealth, particularly telenursing, there is a lack of literature regarding the portrayal and deliverance of empathy and compassion from the nurse to the patient when physical separation exists, such as when the nurse and the patient are in different locations and "seeing" each other through use of technology.

The aim of this qualitative, phenomenological dissertation study was to describe the lived experience of patients feeling empathy or not from nurses when receiving care via telehealth. Watson's Human Caring Science was the nursing theory used to guide this study. The research question was: What is the …

Mexican Money Laundering In The United States: Analysis And Proposals For Reform, Guadalupe Correa-Cabrera, Charles Lewis, William R. Yaworsky May 2024

Mexican Money Laundering In The United States: Analysis And Proposals For Reform, Guadalupe Correa-Cabrera, Charles Lewis, William R. Yaworsky

Anthropology Faculty Publications

This article explains some of the mechanisms through which corruption by high-level Mexican politicians and other organized crime members is facilitated in the United States through money laundering operations. The analysis is based on information contained in court records related to key money laundering cases, as well as in news articles and reports from law enforcement agencies. These materials highlight the interrelationships among U.S. drug use, cartel activities in Mexico, human rights abuses, Mexican political corruption, and money laundering in the United States. This work demonstrates the pervasive use of legitimate businesses and fronts in the United States as a …

Finding God In All Things: Contemplation And Action In Karl Rahner And Bernard Lonergan, Henry O. Widdicombe May 2024

Finding God In All Things: Contemplation And Action In Karl Rahner And Bernard Lonergan, Henry O. Widdicombe

School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses

This thesis aims to explore the Ignatian influence that Karl Rahner and Bernard Lonergan share as a way of comparing the two figures and, consequently, articulating a transcendental theological anthropology that expresses the insights of both and complements each with the other. What emerges from an investigation of the Ignatian roots of Rahner and Lonergan is an awareness of two distinct categories within human experience, an inward dimension wherein psychological and spiritual movements are discerned and an outward dimension where the terms of those movements are worked out—what the Christian tradition has often termed “contemplation” and “action.” For Ignatius, Rahner, …

Far Beyond Words: Analyzing Information Gained Through Nonverbal Communication Across Neurologically Diverse Populations, Addison Bracken May 2024

Far Beyond Words: Analyzing Information Gained Through Nonverbal Communication Across Neurologically Diverse Populations, Addison Bracken

Honors Theses

Nonverbal communication (NVC) refers to all communicative acts except speech that convey messages through signals. Humans perceive and express emotional information through nonverbal cues such as facial expressions, proximity, body language and movement, gestures, eye contact, and haptics. NVC can be just as if not more informative than verbal language as long as the observer is aware of the communication’s meaningful cues. Recognizing the varying nonverbal communicative abilities of a neurologically diverse population allows for more significant interpersonal communication. Despite the different trends of NVC comprehension for populations with varying levels of neurological ability, these paralinguistic cues prove to be …

Identity, Intimacy And Power: From Self Consciousness To Self Trust: A Holistic Approach To Identity In Women To Support Authentic Expression, Aliveness, Freedom And Intimacy With Life During Times Of Change, Jennifer Shields

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

This Dance/Movement Therapy Capstone Thesis is a literature review and heuristic exploration of women’s experience of the patriarchal effects on identity and intimacy. After establishing an understanding of power within the roots of patriarchy and its internalized effects on women’s relationship with their inner knowing this thesis aims to understand power in a new, counter cultural way that is tethered to a source within. Through the lens of Tantrik Hatha Yoga and Authentic Movement this thesis offers a counter cultural way to understand identity as layered, malleable and rooted in a relationship to awareness. This shift in relationship to identity …

Coming Out, Letting Go, Getting Naked: A Community Engagement Arts Based Project, Tim Aumiller May 2024

Coming Out, Letting Go, Getting Naked: A Community Engagement Arts Based Project, Tim Aumiller

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

Creating a healthy sexual minority identity remains a challenge in the 21st century, despite significant advances in social acceptance and civil rights. Sexual minorities are more likely than cis gender heterosexuals to be exposed to traumatic events, and experience shame and mental and physical health symptoms as a result. Despite this, sexual minorities do overcome obstacles to develop resilience. While the coming out process looks different depending on the background of the individual, many gay men find connection and build community through this often difficult process where even rejection may play a part. The author found connection and community …
