An Analysis Of The Exchange Relationships In A Voluntary Organization Network Undergoing Structural Change, Gary A. Goreham Jan 1985

An Analysis Of The Exchange Relationships In A Voluntary Organization Network Undergoing Structural Change, Gary A. Goreham

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Using Richard Emerson's exchange network analysis, exchange relations in the South Dakota 4-H program were examined. South Dakota 4-H is comprised of both paid staff and volunteer leaders. It is currently undergoing structural change through the implementation of the Key Leader System. The Key Leader System involves appointing county level Key Leaders and club level Project Leaders to disseminate information to 4-H members and to assist them with their projects. Survey data, interviews, and State Fair results were collected to test hypotheses generated by exchange network analysis. Both clubs and counties varied in the degree to which they had implemented …

[Review Of] R. H. Barnes. Two Crows Denies It: A History Of Controversy In Omaha Sociology, David M. Gradwohl Jan 1985

[Review Of] R. H. Barnes. Two Crows Denies It: A History Of Controversy In Omaha Sociology, David M. Gradwohl

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

The subtitle of this book clearly reflects the scope of work Barnes sets out to accomplish. It also suggests that the study is aimed at a disciplinary readership consisting of anthropologists, sociologists, and some social historians more than an interdisciplinary audience reflected by the membership of the National Association for Ethnic Studies. Specialists in Plains anthropology and world-wide kinship studies will undoubtedly welcome this historical review of the Omaha tribal social system. Non-specialists can glean some insights as well.

[Review Of] Ken Levine And Ivory Waterworth Levine. Becoming American, The Oddysey [Odyssey] Of A Refugee Family (Film Or Video), Margaret A. Laughlin

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Becoming American is an extraordinary documentary which traces the odyssey of Hang Sou and members of his extended family as they flee the highland hills of war-torn Laos, await resettlement in a refugee camp in Thailand, and eventually resettle in the United States. Sou and his family are preliterate farmers, who served as mercenaries for the CIA's "secret war" in Laos. The Sou family face months of intense culture shock and prejudice after being transported thousands of miles in physical distance from their homeland as they seek to adapt to their new urban and alien environment in Seattle. For the …

[Review Of] Nellie Y. Mckay. Jean Toomer, Artist, Richard L. Herrnstadt Jan 1985

[Review Of] Nellie Y. Mckay. Jean Toomer, Artist, Richard L. Herrnstadt

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Nellie Y. McKay's Jean Toomer, Artist is an account of Toomer's life and work from his birth in 1894 to the publication of his long poem "Blue Meridian" in 1936. McKay's is the most complete biography of Toomer published thus far, and it also includes the most extensive analysis to date of Toomer's literary work. For the biographical material, McKay has made heavy use of the Jean Toomer Special Collection at Fisk University, especially the autobiographical manuscripts and the manuscript letters therein. A detailed scholarly investigation of Toomer has been sorely needed now that his important place in the canon …

[Review Of] Fred W. Voget. The Shoshoni-Crow Sun Dance, Robert Gish Jan 1985

[Review Of] Fred W. Voget. The Shoshoni-Crow Sun Dance, Robert Gish

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

The University of Oklahoma Press has long led the way in publications about the American West, and more particularly about Native American experience in that sometimes limitless region. In keeping with that tradition, The Shoshoni-Crow Sun Dance is volume 170 in the University of Oklahoma Press's Civilization of the American Indian Series -- a series distinctive in its purpose if not always in its result. Professor of anthropology emeritus at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, Fred W. Voget -- as author of this comprehensive study -- adds yet another title to his list of ethnological studies about American Indians, and …

Women In Ministry: 1853-1984, Leah Matthews Jan 1985

Women In Ministry: 1853-1984, Leah Matthews

Honors Papers

The status and role of women in organized leadership positions in the Protestant church has reflected an American cultural basis for sex-typing the professions. Specifically, the ministry as an occupation has traditionally been thought of as a male occupation. Although the obstacles faced by women are usually justified or explained on doctrinal or theological grounds, it is my thesis that they are better accounted for by reference to secular conditions and status structures. This paper is concerned with the Christian ministry as a profession and the ways in which cultural attitudes and social forces have worked together to prevent women …

Clinical Sociology And The Acculturation Specialty, Fred Hoffman Jan 1985

Clinical Sociology And The Acculturation Specialty, Fred Hoffman

Clinical Sociology Review

The sudden arrival of 125,000 Cuban refugees created the need for "acculturation specialists" who could ease the transition of these Hispanic refugees, many of whom suffered from mental disabilities or other stigmas. From the perspective of clinical sociology, acculturation should involve "empowerment " Culture brokers will encounter service dilemmas, factors which contravene the humanistic goal of empowerment of members of a psychiatric population. What course is proper when empowerment of a client might subvert program goals? Should concise information on the welfare system be provided to clients who might use it to abscond and establish another pattern of dependency? Should …

Teaching Clinical Sociology: The Introductory Course, Edward W. Gondolf Jan 1985

Teaching Clinical Sociology: The Introductory Course, Edward W. Gondolf

Clinical Sociology Review

This paper discusses the aims and format of an introductory course in clinical sociology. It reviews the process of teaching clinical sociology as a profession and teaching the theoretical basis that distinguishes the field. Case studies, guest practitioners, and practical exercises are used to prompt an application and integration of the acquired knowledge. Ideally, the course reviewed here can serve as a model for others devising courses in this emerging field or for those attempting to bring some uniformity to the clinical sociology curriculum.

A Philosophical Taxonomy Of The Major Correctional Perspectives: Toward A New Approach In Criminal Justice, Steven Jay Cuvelier Jan 1985

A Philosophical Taxonomy Of The Major Correctional Perspectives: Toward A New Approach In Criminal Justice, Steven Jay Cuvelier

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Since the repudiation of the rehabilitation ideal in the mid 1970s a considerable body of literature has developed in which the social purpose and goal of American corrections are debated. While much attention has been given to the policy issues surrounding the various correctional approaches, the author notes that little attention has been paid to the philosophical foundations upon which these perspectives are based. Chapter 1 traces the development of correctional ideology from its beginning to the present crises. An overview of the current problems faced by corrections is given, focusing upon the lack of conceptual clarity in the criminal …

Status, Self, And Peers: An Ethnography Of Junior High School, Susan Martha Nesheim Allbee Jan 1985

Status, Self, And Peers: An Ethnography Of Junior High School, Susan Martha Nesheim Allbee

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This report begins with a brief discussion of the overall purpose of social science: to be of service to humankind. To examine and report one's findings is no longer the whole of the responsibility of social scientific research. One must also examine the purpose and objectives of that research. In view of those statements, the objective of this project--the gathering and analysis of information on the culture of junior high school students-- is to gain a better understanding of early adolescence and thereby offer opportunities for insights not only into their culture but to add to the body of knowledge …

Trouble-Shooters And Trouble-Makers: Witchfinding And Traditional Malawian Medicine, Arnold Paul Wendroff Jan 1985

Trouble-Shooters And Trouble-Makers: Witchfinding And Traditional Malawian Medicine, Arnold Paul Wendroff

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation describes and analyzes the system of traditional medicine operating in northeastern Malawi, especially those beliefs in witchcraft and spirit possession which cause people to seek out traditional rather than Western healers. Although a wide range of illustrative material is presented, the discussion focuses on an analysis of client correspondence to traditional herbalists (nganga) and diviner-witchdoctors (nchimi). Such correspondence is apparently the first reported in the anthropological literature of central and eastern Africa, and the letters that comprise it are used to elucidate the role of traditional healers and the nature of the healer-client relationship. An examination is also …

Mainline And Peripheral Agriculture: Toward Generic Classification Of Farms, Carlton R. Sollie, Wolfgang Frese Dec 1984

Mainline And Peripheral Agriculture: Toward Generic Classification Of Farms, Carlton R. Sollie, Wolfgang Frese

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

An examination of the state of the art in the classification of farms indicates a need for more work. Classification of farms by size has been widely used and found serviceable. In a capitalistic social system, such as the United States, the most appropriate measure of the relative contributions of farms of different sizes appears to be the market value of products they sell. Accordingly, a preliminary generic typology of U.S. farms, based on published data, is proposed in which Mainline, Marginal, and Peripheral types are identified.

Farm Operation Characteristics, Institutional Support, And The Use Of Soil And Water Conservation Technologies, Peter F. Korsching Dec 1984

Farm Operation Characteristics, Institutional Support, And The Use Of Soil And Water Conservation Technologies, Peter F. Korsching

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

Technologies to control the severity of soil erosion and water pollution are available, and a large institutional structure supports soil conservation work, but success has been rather limited. This study of a sample of farmers in the three watersheds in central Iowa tests a number of hypotheses about the use of conservation technology. Institutional support factors were found to have a stronger relationship to the use of conservation practices than farm operation characteristics. The erosion potential of the land was conditional for specific conservation practice utilization. The use of institutional resources was positively related to farm size and scale. Thus …

Client Success Or Failure In A Halfway House, Patrick G. Donnelly, Brian E. Forschner Sep 1984

Client Success Or Failure In A Halfway House, Patrick G. Donnelly, Brian E. Forschner

Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work Faculty Publications

Halfway houses today are diverse entities. Seiter, et al. (1977) found that almost 60 percent of the houses in the United States are private nonprofit organizations. One-third were state operations with the remainder being federal, local or private profit organizations. The programs in the houses varied from those providing supervision and custody to those providing a full range of intensive in-house treatments for particular client needs. Some halfway houses handle only particular types of offenders (e.g., drug addicts) while others handle a wide range of offenders.

Latessa and Allen (1982) suggest that the sociodemographic and criminal history backgrounds of clients …
