Review Of Accommodating The Pedestrian By Richard Untermann, Michael R. Hill Jan 1986

Review Of Accommodating The Pedestrian By Richard Untermann, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Untermann undertakes to provide design professionals and other decision makers with a down-to-earth, practical guide for converting existing automobile-dominated urban areas into bicycle and pedestrian-oriented neighborhoods and cities. Based primarily on his personal observation, experience, and professional predilections, Untermann lists the presumed "needs" of pedestrians/bicyclists and presents a brief, uneven description of the "characteristics" of walking. A separate chapter, not well-integrated with the rest of the book, focuses specifically on bicyclists and bikeways. The second half of the book addresses specific improvements-primarily for pedestrians suggested by the author for older neighborhoods, downtowns, and suburban communities respectively.

We Will Survive: An Ethnography Of The Grateful Dead Following, Ray Eldridge Jan 1986

We Will Survive: An Ethnography Of The Grateful Dead Following, Ray Eldridge

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Experiencing continual re-creation during each of the twenty-one years preceding 1986, this study's core may continue to unfold indefinitely. Although discovered to encapsulate elements grounded elsewhere, this culture centers upon an experimental musical group known as the Grateful Dead. First encountering the Grateful Dead in the summer of 1981, their ageless repertoire failed to capture me, but an unusual audience filled my senses. Flowing print skirts and other bright but tired attire suggested San Francisco of a time then fifteen years past. Subdued excitement replaced the alcohol inhibition of many rock shows. As the band finally appeared, a peacefully elated …

Plant Shutdown/Layoff And Social Support Interventions, Mitchell Swatez

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

In 1986 it is generally accepted that national economic conditions have improved over recessionary conditions which occurred in the late 1970's and early 1980's. Decline in the manufacturing or "smokestack" sector of the economy is not the major headline or concern that it was a few short years ago. Substantial numbers of workers have been recalled in construction, automotive, aircraft and other industries in the heavy manufacturing sector, demonstrating again the cyclical nature of these industries. Hard times are not over however in the economy — a substantial number of industries, geographic regions, communities and workers are still being impacted …

Children And The Environment: Work, Play And Learning In Rural Sudan, Cindi Katz Jan 1986

Children And The Environment: Work, Play And Learning In Rural Sudan, Cindi Katz

Publications and Research

In agricultural economies, environmental learning and the use of environmental knowledge are central practices of social reproduction. The former is important because it encompasses the acquisition of important vocational skills and knowledge, and the latter because it is often integral to the work of providing or procuring basic needs goods and services. In these societies children learn about the environment--that is, about agriculture, animal husbandry and the use of local resources-- largely in the course of their work and play in a variety of settings. In rural areas of the Third World the transition to capitalist relations of production is …

The Familial Interrelationship Patterns, Socialization, And Juvenile Delinquency: An Integrated Theory And Research, Alan J. Pearl Apr 1985

The Familial Interrelationship Patterns, Socialization, And Juvenile Delinquency: An Integrated Theory And Research, Alan J. Pearl

Dissertations

Delinquency is widespread within American society. Americans are publicly and privately faced with high costs from delinquency. The theoretical development and research are now beginning to shed light upon the dynamics underlying delinquency. To understand and effectively deal with delinquency, more knowledge is necessary on its root causes. This dissertation is intended to provide more etiological knowledge.

Delinquent behavior is seen to be embedded within the interpersonal dynamics of the family at the level of socialization between parents and children. Essentially, the quality of the marital and parent-child dyads can facilitate or impede the socialization of youth. Socialization ineffectiveness leaves …

Chicano Social Work: A Critical Analysis, Julio Angulo, Lourdes Arguelles Mar 1985

Chicano Social Work: A Critical Analysis, Julio Angulo, Lourdes Arguelles

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This paper critically examines an experiment in Social Work education: The development and implementation of a theoretical and practice perspective grounded in the views that Chicanos have about themselves. It is argued that the development of a Chicano perspective has proceeded without reference to the social historical influences on knowledge and curriculum building. More concretely, the structuring effects of dominant scientific paradigms and the organizational requirements of dominant educational institutions. As a result, the Chicano self-view is yet to materialize. Further the scholarship so far generated has been, for the most part, unreflective.

[Review Of] Veronica E. Velarde Tiller. The Jicarilla Apache Tribe: A History, 1846-1970, Wolfgang Binder

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

This first comprehensive history of the Jicarilla Apaches proves an indispensible [indispensable] tool for understanding this tribe, government and Indian relations, and the history of the state of New Mexico. Veronica Tiller was, despite being part of a prominent Jicarilla family, able to strike a balance between giving the reader a wealth of detailed facts pertaining to the tribe and its smaller organizational units and placing them within the larger context of government or New Mexico state policies. The author, who used an impressive number of government documents, is modest and clear sighted enough not to claim an Indian point …

Racism And The Canadian State, Daiva K. Stasiulis Jan 1985

Racism And The Canadian State, Daiva K. Stasiulis

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

The practices and official discourse of a variety of state institutions in Canada have reflected a new level of "race consciousness" during the past five years. A notable development within the Canadian state has been the emergence at all levels of administrative and parliamentary institutions of new "race relations " and "visible minority" committees, liaison and consultative structures, programs, and commissions. Following a series of racially-motivated attacks within Toronto subways directed principally at South Asians, the Metropolitan Toronto Police and the Toronto Transit Commission jointly established a system designed to intercept attackers and prevent further incidents. A growing number of …
