Comparison Of Two Minorities: New Zealand Maoris And Australian Aborigines, Janet Noel Regan Jan 1975

Comparison Of Two Minorities: New Zealand Maoris And Australian Aborigines, Janet Noel Regan

Honors Papers

The most obvious contrast between these two minorities is their relative size; the Maoris represent 10% of the total population of New Zealand while the Aborigines, account for .6% of the total Australian population. These figures are significant: in that they influence the power and resources available to both minorities in their struggles against the dominant majorities. The Maoris are at an advantage because their size is more impressive.

The impact of European contact on the original Maori and Aboriginal cultures points to many similarities and several basic differences. The cultures of both societies, as detailed earlier, had developed into …

Socialization Of Children, Linda Davis Jan 1975

Socialization Of Children, Linda Davis

Nebraska Anthropologist

The children of a culture represent its greatest asset and responsibility. They insure the survival of a culture if its members can accomplish the formidable task of socialization. Americans are acutely aware of this responsibility. This concern is reflected in the tremendous amount of literature about children. For this reason, I used a familiar type of American literature, the comic strip, for an analysis of socialization in the United States. I chose to study "Dennis the Menace" and "Peanuts" because they deal specifically with children from a white, middle class neighborhood.

Socialization, as defined by Hartley and Hartley (In HSU …

Maturity Of Adolescent Unwed Mothers, Sarah L. Claiborne Dec 1974

Maturity Of Adolescent Unwed Mothers, Sarah L. Claiborne

Dissertations and Theses

Adolescence traditionally has been recognized and accepted as a period of exploration of an occasional rebellion against the adult world. Explorations are viewed by behavioral scientists as a quest for identity expansion, and as such, a necessary phase for attaining maturity. Several tasks have been identified which each adolescent must complete if he is to reach maturity. For the present these tasks can be summarized as character formation, attainment of sexual identity, establishment of mature relationships and emancipation from parental control.

Society's attitude towards the rebellion and exploitation of youth is mixed. This confusion seems related to a general breakdown …

Social Work, Sociology, And Social Diagnosis, Harris Chaiklin Oct 1974

Social Work, Sociology, And Social Diagnosis, Harris Chaiklin

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Excerpt from the full-text article:

A new type of scholar-practitioner is needed; one who can contribute to both sociology and social work. To this point sociology has had the advantage because it has more of the needed people than social work; it just won't let them out of the closet. Social work has always been better than its own self-image. Lack of scholarship has hindered organizing and presenting the hard won knowledge which the field has acquired. The way to bring this scattered information together is by developing typologies which are refined in practice and common to both fields. Only …

New Premises For Planning In Appalachia, Richard A. Ball Oct 1974

New Premises For Planning In Appalachia, Richard A. Ball

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The Appalachian Region, particularly Southern Appalachia, has lived through several hundred years of frustration related to its history and geography. The history of the area has become better known during recent years, and it is a history of documented exploitation and socioeconomic disillusionment, a "biography of a depressed area" (Caudill, 1962). Geographically, the region has been regarded essentially as a barrier between the settled East and the fertile lands of the West, a place of rugged terrain and harsh conditions of life. This history and geography have played a large part in the problems which now afflict region and which …

The Beeson Farmstead: A Study Of The Functional Aspects Of A Black Farm In The Richland Community, Annelen Archbold Aug 1974

The Beeson Farmstead: A Study Of The Functional Aspects Of A Black Farm In The Richland Community, Annelen Archbold

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This study documents the lifestyle on a small, prosperous black farmstead in the Richland community of Butler County, Kentucky. It is based on extensive fieldwork and interviews conducted with Percy Beeson, owner of the farm for aver fifty years. The result of the fieldwork and interviews was the documentation of how this farmstead, maintained without mechanical farm equipment, worked as a functional unit on a year-round basis.

As a functional unit, the Beeson farmstead is described in terms of the Beeson family and their ownership of the farm and the breakdown of the property into two dependent units. In the …

Head Start And School Readiness, Robert Bruce Turner May 1974

Head Start And School Readiness, Robert Bruce Turner

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The effect of compensatory education was studied as it influences school readiness in preschool children. The research was conducted in the Logan and Providence areas of Cache County, Utah, with 44 children who had completed the kindergarten year of school. Twenty-two of the children had participated in the compensatory educational experience of Head Start prior to their kindergarten experience. It was found that there was not a significant difference between the Head Start children and their neighbors in terms of their performance on the Boehm Test of Basic Concepts. Therefore, in terms of school preparedness, the Head Start children seem …

History And Acculturation Of The Dakota Indians, James L. Satterlee Dr. Apr 1974

History And Acculturation Of The Dakota Indians, James L. Satterlee Dr.

Agricultural Experiment Station Rural Sociology Pamphlets (1940-1977)

Since the first printing of a publication in 1956 entitled Acculturation of the Dakota Indians, a steady demand has been made upon the Department of Rural Sociology for copies. Since the original, two more printings have taken place (1968 and 1970) so as to meet demands of the public for this information. In the last two years, with increased interest in the Indian situation in South Dakota, students, agency officials and the public in general have indicated a need for more information pertaining to the culture of the Dakota people prior to white contact and the assimilation process. With these …

Sexism In Special Education, Patricia H. Gillespie, Albert H. Fink Apr 1974

Sexism In Special Education, Patricia H. Gillespie, Albert H. Fink

IUSTITIA

The educational establishment is now reflecting the concerns of womanhood. Grudgingly, and even painfully, it seems to some, the large and complicated system of formal education acknowledges the existence of practices which are sexist both in conception and operation. At one level this sexism is directed, at many levels of awareness, toward the functionaries of the system. The economic oppression of teachers, who are mostly female, is an obvious expression of the phenomenon. Another benchmark is the limited career development opportunities available to women as educational managers and academics.

At yet another level, not the less dangerous for being more …

Feminism And The Legalization Of Prostitution: How Far Down The River?, Marilyn C. Zilli Apr 1974

Feminism And The Legalization Of Prostitution: How Far Down The River?, Marilyn C. Zilli

IUSTITIA

One of the most telling issues on the state of the women's movement today is that of the legalization of prostitution. It would be inappropriate to say that the issue has caused a breach in the ranks: the term is inapplicable to a movement which has never claimed coherency and which has, in fact, consistently demonstrated an inability to reconcile the views of its various factions. The prostitution issue is important, rather, precisely because it underscores these differences of analysis and tactics which have appeared in other areas and the splits between white middle class liberal women, radical feminists, marxist …

Present Status Of Women In Professional Athletics, Debra Gaber Apr 1974

Present Status Of Women In Professional Athletics, Debra Gaber

IUSTITIA

The life of a female professional athlete in many ways seems undesirable. Attitudinal pressures and societal demands coupled with the rigors of competitive sport make a female pro's life draining, if not oppressive. On the outside there may appear a gleam of happiness as a photographer catches a pro in action during her moment of glory. Magazine articles assume by inference that being "number one" is glamorous and highly desirable. It does mark a tremendous achievement in an athlete's life, but for a female athlete, "getting there" is almost a nightmare. No female professional is without some battle scars.

Our …

Knowledge And Use Of Social Services In Gervais, Oregon, Elizabeth Lewis, Abby Maier, Lajuana J. Morton Mar 1974

Knowledge And Use Of Social Services In Gervais, Oregon, Elizabeth Lewis, Abby Maier, Lajuana J. Morton

Dissertations and Theses

During first year field placement, we worked with a number of rural families, most of them Mexican-American. It seemed to us that rural families in general and Mexican-Americans in particular were not being very well served by social service agencies. We questioned whether this might be due to a lack of Mexican-American perspective in traditional services or perhaps a lack of Mexican-American manpower or at least Spanish-speaking manpower.

This study, then, developed out of a general area of interest that can be stated as three questions: (1) Do rural people (especially Mexican-Americans) feel there is a need for various social …

A Study Of Attitudes Of South Dakota Residents Toward Selected Aspects Of Hunting, Hunters, And Game Officials, Jerome R. Rosonke Jan 1974

A Study Of Attitudes Of South Dakota Residents Toward Selected Aspects Of Hunting, Hunters, And Game Officials, Jerome R. Rosonke

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A study of the attitudes of South Dakota residents was made to determine: (1) the attitudes of selected South Dakota residents toward selected aspects of hunting, hunters, and game officials; (2) how these attitudes vary when controlled for selected socioeconomic factors; and (3) what socioeconomic factors help explain the observed variation in attitudes. The unit of analysis was the individual respondent, chosen from the state population. A total of 474 residents were interviewed in order to assess: (1) selected socioeconomic characteristics of the respondent; and (2) the respondent's attitude toward selected aspects of hunting, hunters, and game officials. A seven-point …
