Family Security In The Transition From Farm To City, 1750-1850, Richard Bushman Jan 1981

Family Security In The Transition From Farm To City, 1750-1850, Richard Bushman

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

The most elemental change, affecting all who left the farm, shopkeepers and transportation workers as well as factory hands, was separation from the land. For the traditional peasant, land was a source of nearly every human need--nourishment, warmth, clothing. Landowners derived income from their property during illness and old age. Land was both subsistence and security. Planning for a season, a life, or for coming generations turned on the acquisition and use of land. The industrial work discipline may have disrupted familiar work rhythms, but separation from soil jeopardized survival itself. Among many changes, the relation of land and family …

God's Silence And The Shrill Of Ethnicity In The Chicano Novel, Joe E. Rodriquez Jan 1981

God's Silence And The Shrill Of Ethnicity In The Chicano Novel, Joe E. Rodriquez

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Ethnic identity has to do with freely set of values, attitudes, and behavior from one’s cultural legacy in order to affirm a unique sense of peoplehood. In the United States ethnic groups such as the Chicano or Mexican American are often stigmatized, and the psychological burden of ethnic awareness can weigh heavily. Yet a healthy sense of ethnic identity is absolutely necessary for a positive self-concept when a person is part of a group that is slighted because of race or appearance. The question then is: how do Chicanos come to terms with their cultural tradition in a society that …

[Review Of] Robert L. Schuyler (Ed.), Archaeological Perspectives On Ethnicity In America: Afro-American And Asian American Culture History, Lyle Koehler

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Robert Schuyler, Associate Curator in charge of the American Historical Archaeology Section of the University of Pennsylvania Museum, believes that archaeologists have too often avoided working with Afro-American and Asian American sites and have not effectively used interdisciplinary sources to interpret patterns in the archaeological record. The fourteen articles in Archaeological Perspectives attempt to remedy such concerns but, perhaps in part because of the newness of this interest, the selections are of uneven quality.

Population Movement And Growth In Utah County, Utah 1940 To 1980, Brian W. Maxfield Jan 1981

Population Movement And Growth In Utah County, Utah 1940 To 1980, Brian W. Maxfield

Theses and Dissertations

Utah County, Utah, and more particularly the Utah Valley area, has undergone an enormous change during the last forty years. Rapid growth and urbanization brings with it the problems of urban sprawl. Controlling this sprawl is determined often times by an effective growth policy. Mapping and analyzing growth patterns and trends is a useful method in determining the effectiveness of the "growth towards the cities" policy of Utah County. Research was conducted by using maps, air photos, and field work in locating the growth history of the county.
Growth has been influenced by several factors among which are the physical, …

Public Opinion On The Death Penalty: The Reasons Behind The Views, Lauren Ungar Jan 1981

Public Opinion On The Death Penalty: The Reasons Behind The Views, Lauren Ungar

Honors Papers

Even the most outspoken proponents of the death penalty would not support its use for all of these 'crimes', but there is little consensus as to when, if ever, it should be used. Public opinion has been considered an important indicator of the death penalty's constitutionality and it is likely to be heavily considered by state and national legislators deciding whether to support upcoming bills to reinstate the death penalty. Recent public opinion polls show increasing support for the death penalty, but few researchers have asked their respondents to expand on why or under what circumstances they would favor the …

Deepest Roots - Finest Fruits, Johannes Knudsen Jan 1981

Deepest Roots - Finest Fruits, Johannes Knudsen

The Bridge

Roots and fruits have an affinity in the natural order of things. It cannot be denied, of course, that the technical skills of our day can create marvels in sterile isolation or hot-house splendor, almost without roots. Nor must it be ignored that quickly growing plants with frail surface contacts to water and nutrients can grow luscious fruits. I would rather eat a strawberry than an acorn. Thus it shall not be contended that finest fruits require deepest roots. But let not the logic of cause and effect stifle a theme. Roots and fruits are valuable and related factors of …

Danish Settlement In Fresno County, California: An Example Of Acculturation To A Foreign Environment. 1880-1920, Marianne T. Stecher Jan 1981

Danish Settlement In Fresno County, California: An Example Of Acculturation To A Foreign Environment. 1880-1920, Marianne T. Stecher

The Bridge

Danish settlers were first attracted to Fresno County, California, in the late 1870's. By 1920, at the close of the era of Danish immigration, 1,839 Danes, 1 % of the entire Danish population of the United States, lived in Fresno County. The idea of Mediterranean crops thriving on twenty acres of fertile soil was tempting to aspiring farmers. The possibility of confining farm work to such a small land area seemed more preferable than one-hundred and sixty acres of spreading wheat fields in the midwestern prairie. A prospering fruit farm or a vineyard in sunny California was a dream of …

Hans Christian Andersen's Life And Works: A Danish-American Perspective, Inga Kromann-Kelly Jan 1981

Hans Christian Andersen's Life And Works: A Danish-American Perspective, Inga Kromann-Kelly

The Bridge

What meaning can Hans Christian Andersen's life and works, spanning almost the entire 19th century, have for the Danish-American of the twentieth and future centuries? What follows is the perspective of only one Danish-American; others may hold quite different views based on their familiarity and experiences with this internationally known and much revered figure. My intent is not to provide a definitive answer to the above question, but rather to stimulate thought on the subject.

Mormon Land Ownership As A Factor In Evaluating The Extent Of Mormon Settlements And Influence In Missouri 1831-1841, Wayne J. Lewis Jan 1981

Mormon Land Ownership As A Factor In Evaluating The Extent Of Mormon Settlements And Influence In Missouri 1831-1841, Wayne J. Lewis

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis has been to demonstrate as clearly as possible the full extent of Mormon Land in Missouri during the years 1831-1841. An identification has been made of the names of several thousand of these early Mormons and will further show the scope of Mormonism during this period. This study will add detail to what previous writers have stated about this trying period for Mormonism.

As accurately as possible, the author has identified where the Mormon settlements were, through graphs and charts. It has been demonstrated that the Mormon population extended beyond the traditional areas they have …

Selected Personality Constructs As Correlates Of Personnel Appointment, Appraisal, And Mobility In Seventh-Day Adventist Schools, Merle A. Greenway

Dissertations

Problem. Despite tentative postulations and explorations of the person/job interaction, the specific relationships between personality and occupational behavior are not clearly understood. In particular, the relationships between human temperament and various aspects of personnel administration in an educational setting are generally unknown. The purpose of this study was to profile the temperament traits of professional educators in the Seventh-day Adventist school system, grouped on the basis of occupationally relevant selection variables; and to investigate the role of personality as it relates to personnel appointment, appraisal, and mobility.

Method. A demographic questionnaire and the Temperament Inventory were administered to 486 teachers, …

Interpersonal Aggression: Assertion Of Significant Reality Hypothesis, Dwight Alan Drury Jan 1981

Interpersonal Aggression: Assertion Of Significant Reality Hypothesis, Dwight Alan Drury

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Interpersonal aggression is analyzed with the use of the symbolic interactionist perspective in this thesis. The literature generally lacks such an analysis. Symbolic interactionism views individuals as active definers and constructors of a reality. Individuals gain a sense of reality and the means by which to define it through the process of being socialized into various groups. That part of reality which is most important to the individual is termed "significant reality." A major part of an individual's "significant reality" is his or her self-concept. When an individual deems his or her "significant reality" is threatened, he or she may …
