Attitudes Toward Animal Suffering: An Exploratory Study, John Braithwaite, Valerie Braithwaite Jan 1982

Attitudes Toward Animal Suffering: An Exploratory Study, John Braithwaite, Valerie Braithwaite

Attitudes Towards Animals Collection

A total of 302 undergraduates in the social sciences and the humanities, at two Australian universities, were given a questionnaire designed to explore public attitudes toward animal suffering. The results, though preliminary, strongly suggest that attitudes may be in great part supportive of animal welfare and animal rights. However, as reflected in the answers to the questionnaire, actual behavior does not always follow suit. The recommendation is made that the animal welfare/animal rights movement should perhaps place more emphasis on raising people's awareness of the inconsistencies between their attitudes toward animals and their behavior concerning them.

The Silver Spring 17, Andrew N. Rowan

Laboratory Experiments Collection

On November 23, 1981, in a Maryland District Court, Dr. Edward Taub was found guilty under a Maryland state anti-cruelty statute of not providing adequate veterinary care for 6 of the 17 monkeys confiscated from his laboratory 2 months earlier. The case has received extensive press coverage and has also caused widespread alarm in the scientific community. According to Science (274:121, 1981 ), "scientists throughout the country have been shocked by the Taub case, initially perceiving it as a bid by antivivisectionists to procure a court ruling against animal experimentation." Taub himself has fostered this impression and has drawn a …

[Review Of] R. Baxter Miller, Ed., Black American Literature And Humanism, Jean Bright Jan 1982

[Review Of] R. Baxter Miller, Ed., Black American Literature And Humanism, Jean Bright

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

The seven carefully documented essays in literary criticism in this excellent short volume are possibly more lively and provocative than those ordinarily found in scholarly publications. The title, however, might well have been: eight black writers and the human condition. Definitions of humanism are varied though not contradictory, but the book is held together by reassessments of black literature which challenge many of the assumptions of previous critics.

[Review Of] Sandra Maria Esteves, Yerba Buena, Wolfgang Binder

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

With this, her first anthology, the New York born Puerto Rican poet Sandra Maria Esteves should establish herself as the "first lady" among the Latin poets in that city. Esteves, thirty-three, whose poetry has appeared before in twenty magazines1 and who is an acknowledged painter, combines in her best work her own ghetto experience with nature symbolism, political, cultural and racial awareness and a determined woman's perspective.

The Social Psychology Of Imitated Jaywalking: An Extension Of Model Sex And Social Status, Edward W. Gregory Jr. Jan 1982

The Social Psychology Of Imitated Jaywalking: An Extension Of Model Sex And Social Status, Edward W. Gregory Jr.

Masters Theses

A field experiment is designed and conducted to examine what effects the presence of a model who jaywalks (i.e., crosses a street against a "Don't Walk" light) has on inducing jaywalking by unknowing pedestrians who are on the street corner with the model. Two models are used, one male and one female, and their perceived social status is varied by changing their attire from one day to the next to determine what effects sex and social status of models have on initiating jaywalking in other pedestrians.

The review of related literature discusses the findings of a number of studies which …

The January 1937 Flood In The Ohio Valley And Its Impact On The Tri-State Area, Paula Tammie Click Jan 1982

The January 1937 Flood In The Ohio Valley And Its Impact On The Tri-State Area, Paula Tammie Click

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

In January of 1937, the largest flood of record hit the Ohio and Mississippi Valleys. Lowell Thomas compared the flood of 1937 with the Great Flood of the Bible. While this exaggerates somewhat the magnitude of the disaster, the people of the Tri-State area must have felt their world was coming to an end; indeed, for the individuals killed in the deluge, their world did end. Yet, the Tri-State and the Ohio Valley survived the inundation. In this paper, the writer intends to concentrate on the effects of the flood on the cities of Ashland, Kentucky, Huntington, West Virginia and …

Danish Farmers In The Middle West, Erik Helmer Pedersen Jan 1982

Danish Farmers In The Middle West, Erik Helmer Pedersen

The Bridge

A former Danish carpenter and farmer, Niels Madsen, his wife, Anna, and their six children, aged 15 to 3 years, were among the passengers on board the America wooden paddle-steamer "Northern Light" when the ship on May 1, 1869, left Copenhagen. It was bound for New York, but enroute it had to call at Gothenburg in Sweden and Christiana in Norway. The Madsen family had left their native village of Klippinge at Stevns, in the company of about 30 other emigrants, headed by a so-called "yankee," Mr. A. Clausen, who during the spring of 1869 had formed an emigration group. …

Walking Into The Night – An Exercise In Integrated Pedestrian-Oriented Facilities Design, Michael R. Hill Jan 1982

Walking Into The Night – An Exercise In Integrated Pedestrian-Oriented Facilities Design, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Several of the ideas and approaches outlined in the sections above were implemented as exercises in a joint, graduate-level community planning/landscape architecture design seminar at Iowa State University during the 1980/81 winter academic quarter. Students were challenged to approach the environments utilized by pedestrians in an integrated, holistic manner. A specific focus was required for the course, however, and the co-instructors chose to concentrate on the character of the pedestrian environment as it is experienced when walking at night.

A review of the literature would lead the planner/designer to conclude that the pedestrian environment largely disappears after dark. With the …

Peter Lassen: Danish Pioneer Of California, Franklin D. Scott Jan 1982

Peter Lassen: Danish Pioneer Of California, Franklin D. Scott

The Bridge

"The Dane Peter Lassen," or " Peter Lassen, a Danish Blacksmith," appears in almost every memoir dealing with early northern California. His Danishness was obvious, though no one bothers to explain why. Was his speech the telltale feature? The man was almost thirty years of age when he left Denmark, and he had had no opportunity to learn English while his tongue was ductile. He came to California in the spring of 1840, at the beginning of a decade of decision. At that moment Indians inhabited the land, Russians were still established on the California coast, Mexicans held title to …

Life On Lilac Hill Sketches Of Karen And Chresten Pedersen's Prairie Years, Karen M. Kadgihn Jan 1982

Life On Lilac Hill Sketches Of Karen And Chresten Pedersen's Prairie Years, Karen M. Kadgihn

The Bridge

A jackrabbit was sunning himself on a rock in the warm March sun, stretched out and went to sleep. Suddenly a noise awakened him and he jumped quickly away at right angles to where the noise had originated. From a safe distance he stopped, sat up to see what had disturbed his siesta, wiggling his ears and nose as he watched another of those strange creatures going by his sunning rock. What were they? They had been passing in increasing numbers, and had actually made parallel tracks right by his rock!

A Sampler, Carl Hansen Jan 1982

A Sampler, Carl Hansen

The Bridge

Note: Seventy years after his death the Danish-born writer Carl Hansen (1860-1916) remains, among those who read Danish, a highly valued interpreter of the immigrant experience in the United States. Hansen was the subject of two articles in earlier issue (Vol. 2:1, 1979) of The Bridge. His short stories and one novel are together a landmark in the American literature written in Danish , but the books have become inaccessible to many and, as to language, closed to a large audience who would appreciate his ability to sketch Danish-American personalities and lives. In Tyler, Minnesota, where he lived until 1910, …

Structural And Organizational Forces In The Etiology Of Corporate Crime, Beti Thompson Dec 1981

Structural And Organizational Forces In The Etiology Of Corporate Crime, Beti Thompson

Dissertations

In an effort to gain understanding of the etiology of corporate crime, a theoretical framework for examining the problem has been developed. This framework includes structural features such as a capitalistic organization of society, the importance of political economy, the importance of market structure, and the importance of corporate influence over the legal environment, in understanding corporate crime. Corporations within this society are affected by the structural features of society. Organizations are organized according to capitalistic principles and effectively force their employees into certain kinds of actions and activities. It was theorized that such organizational factors might have an influence …

Social Work Practice In Health Care: An Ethnic Sensitive Approach, Elfriede G. Schlesinger, Wynetta Devore Dec 1981

Social Work Practice In Health Care: An Ethnic Sensitive Approach, Elfriede G. Schlesinger, Wynetta Devore

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The relationship between ethnicity and modes of response to illness has been well documented. One example is stoicism as contrasted with volatile behavior in response to pain of different groups. Another is increasing awareness of the fact that non-traditional healers (eog., espiritistas, cuaranderos) are used extensively by members of various ethnic groups.

Insufficient attention has been paid to how such knowledge can be incorporated in social work practice.

This paper reviews prevailing social work interventive procedures and skills and suggests needed adaptations if social work practice is to be more sensitive and responsive to different health behaviors and beliefs of …
