Female Power, Ethnicity, And Aging, Linda M. C. Abbott Jan 1986

Female Power, Ethnicity, And Aging, Linda M. C. Abbott

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

The standard academic presentation on the topic of power rarely alludes to the elderly, ethnic groups, or to females of any age or race. The cultural history of humankind has been one of gross inequities in the distribution of power, and much of this distributional variance has been attributable to the categories of race, gender, and age. When these categories overlap, the impact on individual access to power has been, and continues to be, the greatest.

The Case For Animal Rights, Tom Regan Jan 1986

The Case For Animal Rights, Tom Regan

Animal Welfare Collection

In the space I have at my disposal here I can only sketch, in the barest outline, some of the main features of the book Its main themes-and we should not be surprised by this-involve asking and answering deep, foundational moral questions about what morality is, how it should be understood, and what is the best moral theory, all considered. I hope I can convey something of the shape I think this theory takes. The attempt to do this will be (to use a word a friendly critic once used to describe my work) cerebral, perhaps too cerebral. But this …

What's On Tv? A Demonstration Of The Utility Of Contextualism And Content Analysis In Mass Media Research, Craig P. Gaumer Jan 1986

What's On Tv? A Demonstration Of The Utility Of Contextualism And Content Analysis In Mass Media Research, Craig P. Gaumer

Masters Theses

The purpose of this thesis has been to develop, test and utilize a reliable method to quantify the prevalence of pro- and anti-social behavior on children's television as assessed from a contextualist perspective. Many previous studies in the area of television have arbitrarily assigned either pro- or anti-social labels to television programs without the benefit of analyzing the content of these programs

The few studies that have attempted to analyze the pro- and anti-social content of children's television have used only physical parameters to define pro- or anti-social behavior. Through the development of a reliable method of analyzing the contextually …

[Review Of] Stephen Glazier, Ed. Caribbean Ethnicity Re Visited, David M. Johnson Jan 1986

[Review Of] Stephen Glazier, Ed. Caribbean Ethnicity Re Visited, David M. Johnson

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Like marine life washed up on a beach, most Caribbean peoples have been brought where they are by powerful forces outside their control. These forces include colonialism, slavery, and revolution, processes in the seventeenth and eighteenth century that convulsed Europe and whose effects spread to much of the rest of the world. Just as tidepools a few feet apart can have completely different sets of animal and plant life, Caribbean islands just a few miles apart can have completely different histories and mixtures of peoples. Mirroring the complexity of the life in these tidepools, there are myriad interpretations of the …

[Review Of] Linda Hogan. Seeing Through The Sun, Victor Macaruso Jan 1986

[Review Of] Linda Hogan. Seeing Through The Sun, Victor Macaruso

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

A Chickasaw of mixed blood who grew up in Oklahoma and now lives in Minnesota, Linda Hogan writes spare poems pulled skin tight over the bones and blood and flesh they contain. She does not exploit her Native American experience to make poems; she does not need to. Her references to "the old sky woman," "black corn dolls," and "evicted grandmothers," who walk " wrapped in trade cloth," are integrated into the sense of life which fills her poems; yet the tensions which come from having inherited two distinct traditions are not ignored: In my left pocket a Chickasaw hand …

Socioeconomic Indicators Of Women's Status In Developing Countries, 1970–1980, Constantina Safilios-Rothschild Jan 1986

Socioeconomic Indicators Of Women's Status In Developing Countries, 1970–1980, Constantina Safilios-Rothschild

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

From 1970–1980, several conferences were held and publications produced regarding the need to improve data collection on indicators of women’s status, as well as a number of publications offering concrete proposals for such improvements. During this period, the disaggregation of statistics by sex has expanded in many countries and indicators, and such disaggregated statistics are presented with increased frequency in international data compiled by United Nations specialized organizations. In addition, two major sets of statistics on the status of women have appeared. These statistics on socioeconomic indicators of the status of women in developing countries include statistics on men as …

Race And Class In American Race Relations Theory, 1894-1939, Vernon Williams Jr. Jan 1986

Race And Class In American Race Relations Theory, 1894-1939, Vernon Williams Jr.

William Monroe Trotter Institute Publications

The purpose of this essay is to identify the origins of the debate between Wilson and Pinkney. The period covered focuses on the years 1894 to 1939 - from the publication of Franz Boas's "Human Faculty as Determined by Race" in the Proceedings of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1894, to the publications of Robert E. Park's "The Nature of Race Relations" in 1939. It is my argument that the parameters of the discussion regarding the progressiveness of race relations in the United States were defined during these years, and that all current theories are but …

Learning About Women And Urban Services In Latin America And The Caribbean, Marianne Schmink, Judith Bruce, Marilyn Kohn Jan 1986

Learning About Women And Urban Services In Latin America And The Caribbean, Marianne Schmink, Judith Bruce, Marilyn Kohn

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

In 1978 when the Population Council formulated a program to learn more about low-income urban women’s access to services, the dearth of information was striking, particularly in contrast to the emerging body of information delineating access to credit, extension, membership in rural institutions, and representation in local governments. Access to services was much less well-defined owing to the diverse cultures that meet in the urban environment, the mobility of city life, and the fluidity of households. Urban development planners, researchers, and those involved in community action projects in a number of South American cities were approached to find out what …

A Cross-Cultural Comparative Analysis Of Levels Of Social Development And Gender Stratification, Helen Elisabeth Wells Jan 1986

A Cross-Cultural Comparative Analysis Of Levels Of Social Development And Gender Stratification, Helen Elisabeth Wells

Honors Papers

There is a current debate in social science literature, in Marxist theory, and in Feminist theory on the role of gender in affecting the form of inequality. Particular emphasis is placed on the controversy over whether or not women suffer universal exploitation and oppression. The debate over the role of gender in the stratification process is further complicated by a division in orientation: some consider gender inequality to be conditioned by relations of production or distribution that arise historically, and therefore are not universal (Engles 1968; Friedl 1978; Sacks 1974; Sanday 1974); while others trace it ultimately to fundamental biological …

Sexism In Space: The Freudian Formula In "Star Trek", Mary Jo Deegan Jan 1986

Sexism In Space: The Freudian Formula In "Star Trek", Mary Jo Deegan

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

These words, spoken at the beginning of each televised "Star Trek" episode, set the stage for the fantastic future. Although the "Star Trek" series was cancelled in 1969 after only three years of production, it generated a large cult following that flourishes still today. One reason for the series' remarkable longevity is its depiction of the future as a Freudian fantasy. This Freudian vision draws on cultural myths embedded in the patriarchal dominance of men over women characteristic of Western civilization.

According to Freud, both sexes are driven by three instincts --- sex, aggression, and the death wish---but men have …

Children And The Environment: Work, Play And Learning In Rural Sudan, Cindi Katz Jan 1986

Children And The Environment: Work, Play And Learning In Rural Sudan, Cindi Katz

Publications and Research

In agricultural economies, environmental learning and the use of environmental knowledge are central practices of social reproduction. The former is important because it encompasses the acquisition of important vocational skills and knowledge, and the latter because it is often integral to the work of providing or procuring basic needs goods and services. In these societies children learn about the environment--that is, about agriculture, animal husbandry and the use of local resources-- largely in the course of their work and play in a variety of settings. In rural areas of the Third World the transition to capitalist relations of production is …

The Family Historian, G. Wesley Johnson Jr. Jan 1986

The Family Historian, G. Wesley Johnson Jr.

Faculty Publications

The archivist of a great university library was once asked his secret in collecting so many important materials. He smiled and said, "My success can be summed up in two very important words: vacuum sweeper." His approach was to locate as many relevant materials as possible and then to analyze and classify them. His success was linked to having a wide definition of what records might be of value for historical archives. Where others threw away phone books, he kept them (valuable information on professions and businesses in the Yellow Pages), where others threw away menus, he kept them (valuable …

The Depo-Provera Controversy: A Sociological Analysis, Pamela A. Hayman Dec 1985

The Depo-Provera Controversy: A Sociological Analysis, Pamela A. Hayman

Masters Theses

This study is a sociological analysis of the Depo- Provera Controversy. The strong programme in the sociology of science was the method employed for examining the social and political dimensions of the decision-making process underlying science and technology as it relates to the approval of Depo-Provera as a contraceptive in the United States. The data were consistent with the social constructionist perspective, rather than the positivistic view of science. In almost every instance, scientific conclusions followed alignment rather than arising from objective, universalistic analysis. Upjohn scientists and family planners concluded that Depo-Provera was safe and advocated its use; feminists and …

Dropping Out Of High School: An Inside Look, Michelle Fine

Publications and Research

In September, 1984, I began an ethnography of student life in and out of a New York City public high school to figure out why urban students drop out of high school at such extraordinary rates. By December, why urban students stay in high school through graduation struck me as an equally compelling question.

Humanistic Criminology: Roots From Peter Kropotkin, Larry L. Tifft, Lois E. Stevenson Sep 1985

Humanistic Criminology: Roots From Peter Kropotkin, Larry L. Tifft, Lois E. Stevenson

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Kropotkin's extensive writings on criminological issues have been almost totally neglected. Through critical historical and macro-structural analyses Kropotkin assessed institutional arrangements disclosing how they were or were not meeting human needs. Our exploration focuses on Kropotkin's theoretical contributions, his feelings-based criminology and his extremely insightful dualistic conceptualization of "human nature". His contributions to penology, and his assessment of social arrangements which would meet the complex and ever-changing needs of humankind are briefly examined. Kropotkin's analytic framework provides an insightful and provocative base from which to synthesize criminological thought and research and from which to take action to alter social arrangements …

Animal Control In Fulton County, William Garrett Aug 1985

Animal Control In Fulton County, William Garrett

Management and Control of Companion Animal Populations Collection

Our animal control personnel in Fulton County are running a successful program. We serve a stable population of approximately 600,000 people based on the 1980 census and updated projections. Our area encompasses some 225,000 households. Of those, approximately 143,000 are single family dwellings, 75,000 are of the multiple family variety and some 7,000 fall into other categories. Geographically, the area consists of 50% urban, 40% suburban and about 10% rural. Which is relatively little "true" rural land consisting of agriculture or open woodlands. The county is approximately 75 miles in length and varies from 2 to 35 miles in width …

Animal Control, Birth Control, And Community Education: Impacts On The Colorado Springs Pet Population, 1970-1984, Phil Arkow

Management and Control of Companion Animal Populations Collection

By 1973, The Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region, like so many animal shelters across the country, had become quite alarmed at the numbers of animals being euthanized each day. The fact that an agency chartered in 1949 to provide animal relief and rescue had become a humane slaughterhouse, killing upwards of 50 animals each day, was appalling to the organization's directors, staff, members, and to the public at large. It was becoming apparent that the Society’s humane officers had become urban game wardens, routinely killing thousands of pets each year so that the rest could survive on limited …

Comprehensive Animal Control, Jack Homes Aug 1985

Comprehensive Animal Control, Jack Homes

Management and Control of Companion Animal Populations Collection

In 1974 the Executive Committee of the Vancouver Regional Branch of the B.C.S.P.C.A. began investigating factors that influence the pet population. Specific attention was given to the changing sociological environment of the area as well as techniques for the control of the pet population and its growth. Some of the sociological problems found in the survey were as follows. Massive increases in multi-unit dwellings such as condominiums and apartment blocks had changed the living space available for both humans and animals. In addition, the actual role of the dog in society had changed in many instances. People were choosing larger …

City Of Los Angeles: Animal Care And Control, Robert I. Rush

Management and Control of Companion Animal Populations Collection

I have found my department's work statistics to be more useful in determining the changes in the pet population and in the success of our programs. The shelters are mirrors of our society, they tell us what dog breeds are popular and what health conditions prevail for pets in our cities. We can gauge the success of our programs by looking at the numbers and types of dogs and cats impounded, the number of animal bites, cruelty cases and stray dogs.
