Danish Perceptions And West Indian Realities: Slavery In The Danish West Indies, Karen Fog Olwig Jan 1988

Danish Perceptions And West Indian Realities: Slavery In The Danish West Indies, Karen Fog Olwig

The Bridge

The year 1987 marked the 70th anniversary of the sale of the Danish West Indies to the United States of America. With the sale of the three small islands of St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John, Denmark had disposed of all her tropical colonies, which at one time had included possessions on the Gold Coast in Africa, the present Ghana, and in southeastern India, most importantly Trankebar.

Identifying Danish-American Folklife, Gregory Hansen Jan 1988

Identifying Danish-American Folklife, Gregory Hansen

The Bridge

Danish-American ethnicity has traditionally been studied by examining the literature, religion, social and educational institutions, and business enterprises of Danes in America. In general researchers have looked to Fine Arts and Culture to understand the Danish ethnic identity. But examining only Culture and Art yields an incomplete understanding of culture and art. Danish ethnic culture in America consists primarily of the non-elitist traditions and arts of individuals' everyday lives rather than the contributions of the elite, and the discipline of folklore can provide a more complete concept of Danish heritage. Folklife studies involve the stages of identifying, documenting, interpreting, and …

[Review Of] Vinson Brown. Native Americans Of The Pacific Coast, William Oandasan Jan 1988

[Review Of] Vinson Brown. Native Americans Of The Pacific Coast, William Oandasan

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

In the introduction to Native Americans of the Pacific Coast, Vinson Brown presents many admirable ambitions for any scholar writing on human existence. Brown proclaims that he will attempt to make the first Americans "live" in the style of the 1500s to 1700s during the "days of old" and of "glory and independence." He then proceeds to assert that, in order to accomplish this goal, antiquated concepts used to "justify" the conquest of tribal Peoples must be "put aside." He urges us, "instead," to be inquisitive and open so that we can "see and hear" what indigenous life was like …

The Effects Of Reading Ethnic Literature On The Attitudes Of Adolescents, Joan Wynne Sullivan Jan 1988

The Effects Of Reading Ethnic Literature On The Attitudes Of Adolescents, Joan Wynne Sullivan

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

The first statement reflects one student's vision of her world and her solution to one problem in that world. Written in an essay which asked white students for their reactions to having Vietnamese in their school, the statement reveals a limited view of the world and possibly a parroting of community rhetoric. The second statement is an oral response by the same student taped during her reading of a novel which dealt with ethnic issues. Her revised perception indicating the need for a new look at other ethnic groups, rather than an expulsion of them from the country, suggests the …

Mary Bardenfleth - "I Remember", Caroline Olsen, Translator

The Bridge

These are some memories of a woman whose life spanned a whole century, from 1886 to 1986. As a Danish immigrant in Minneapolis, she saw the changes in the Danish community from the time when the newcomers clung to their heritage, until today, two or three generations later when almost no one speaks in the mother tongue. Her special gift for story telling, her acting ability, and her amazing memory of poetry made her a very unusual, lovable person. Her outgoing personality and friendliness touched the lives of countless people.

The Impact Of Volunteer Experience On Adolescent Social Development: Evidence Of Program Effects, Stephen F. Hamilton, L. Mickey Fenzel Jan 1988

The Impact Of Volunteer Experience On Adolescent Social Development: Evidence Of Program Effects, Stephen F. Hamilton, L. Mickey Fenzel

School K-12

The Social and Personal Responsibility Scale was employed in a study of the Youth Volunteers program, involving 44 adolescents in 12 projects, equally divided between child care and community service. Participants showed statistically significant gains on the Social Responsibility sub-scale. Girls gained more than boys and volunteers in community improvement projects gained more than those in child care. However, as in previous studies, gains were quite modest. Testimony from adolescents and adult participants was more strongly positive, volunteers citing improvement in their knowledge of themselves and others and the acquisition of new skills, adults seeing greater willingness to make decisions. …

The Roles Of Youth In Society: A Reconceptualization, Ruthanne Kurth-Schai Jan 1988

The Roles Of Youth In Society: A Reconceptualization, Ruthanne Kurth-Schai

School K-12

The 1980s have been characterized as a decade of platforms for educational change. In 19S3 alone, five reports were released by national task forces and commissions, all expressing serious concern for the future of youth and society, and all proposing recommendations for ways in which educational policies and practices might be altered, to address such concerns.

Effects Of Gender, Ethnicity, And School Equity On Students' Leadership Behaviors In A Group Game, Helen A. Moore Jan 1988

Effects Of Gender, Ethnicity, And School Equity On Students' Leadership Behaviors In A Group Game, Helen A. Moore

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Leadership skills and the perception of leadership by students and classroom teachers are examined in 10 desegregated elementary schools. The 10 schools were first divided into "high-equity" and "low-equity" schools based on the extent to which they met "integrative" educational criteria, such as multicultural curricula, multiethnic staff, minority parent involvement, and other factors. A random sample of 202 Hispanic and Anglo students participated in a cooperative group task in gender-segregated groups composed of 3 students from each ethnic group. Results indicate that trained observers found gender differences in nonverbal and verbal leadership behaviors among students across the schools, including higher …

Review Of Sociology: A Brief But Critical Introduction, 2nd Edition, By Anthony Giddens, Michael R. Hill Jan 1988

Review Of Sociology: A Brief But Critical Introduction, 2nd Edition, By Anthony Giddens, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

As Giddens announces correctly in the preface, "This book differs from most other introductory texts in sociology in several ways" (p. vii). It concentrates on theory, "the core of theoretical concerns which sociology shares with all the social sciences" (p. vii). Giddens asserts, "I do not adopt the usual view that these issues are unimportant to those seeking to achieve an initial acquaintance with sociology. Neither do I accept the equally common idea that such matters are too complex to be grasped before the reader has a mastery of the more empirical content of the subject" (pp. vii-viii). On the …

Effects Of Alternate Income-Generating Strategies Of Small Farm Households: A Modified Farming Systems Approach, E. Yvonne Beauford, H. Max Miller Dec 1987

Effects Of Alternate Income-Generating Strategies Of Small Farm Households: A Modified Farming Systems Approach, E. Yvonne Beauford, H. Max Miller

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

The growing dependence of small farm households upon nonfarm income involves important changes in sources of income, in levels and techniques of production, and in assessments of economic well-being. Based on a sample of small-farm households drawn from the four rural development regions of Georgia, this research examines these changes by focusing on household income, tracing patterns of decision-making related to its production, and attempts to evaluate the consequent economic well-being of small-farm households. The primary analytic technique is discriminant analysis, with 28 variables representing three elements of the farming system--the household, the household's resources and farming enterprises. Findings suggest …

Family Economic Organization And The Practice Of Subsistence Cropping: The Case Of Swaziland, Vernaline Watson Dec 1987

Family Economic Organization And The Practice Of Subsistence Cropping: The Case Of Swaziland, Vernaline Watson

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

An understanding of interrelationships between agronomic systems and the larger social organizational structures that sustain them is deemed crucial in devising appropriate strategies for increased crop production in Africa and other nonwestern settings. This paper focuses on Swaziland, in southern Africa, where effort is under way to promote surplus, commercial cropping among small-scale indigenous farmers. The persistence of subsistence type cropping by these farmers is shown to relate to traditional patterns of family economic organization, specifically division of labor and ties of economic interdependence among family members. Implications for agronomic policy are discussed.

Vermont Revisited, William Jay Smith Jun 1987

Vermont Revisited, William Jay Smith

New England Journal of Public Policy

Vermont Revisited, William Jay Smith's sweet-bitter memoir of Pownal, Vermont, captures the political and social minutiae of a small, rural New England town in transition which continued to preoccupy itself in almost conspiratorial drama with its own parochial agendas, denying, even if not oblivious of, the changes at its doorstep. Yet Smith's observations of the machinations that were grist for the mill of the small-town intrigues are tinged with a sadness, with an awareness of an old order dying, of old values under siege, of a new order intruding itself — less private, more depriving if perhaps more equitable, and …

The Multidimensional Concept Of Religiosity And Its Application To The Construction Of Mormon Religiosity Scales, Jeff Black May 1987

The Multidimensional Concept Of Religiosity And Its Application To The Construction Of Mormon Religiosity Scales, Jeff Black

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Until the 1960's, the concept of religiosity in sociology was very underdeveloped. Although many earlier social scientists were interested in religion, the concept of religiosity was conceptually and theoretically unsophisticated. Religiosity or religiousness was most often determined by church attendance or sometimes simply church membership. In the last two decades, much has been done to rectify this condition.

The Movement Action Plan: A Strategic Framework Describing The Eight Stages Of Successful Social Movements, Bill Moyer Apr 1987

The Movement Action Plan: A Strategic Framework Describing The Eight Stages Of Successful Social Movements, Bill Moyer

Strategy and Social Movements Collection

Social movements are collective actions in which the populace is alerted, educated, and mobilized, over years and decades, to challenge the powerholders and the whole society to redress social problems or grievances and restore critical social values. By involving the populace directly in the political process, social movements also foster the concept of government of, by, and for the people. The power of movements is directly proportional to the forcefulness with which the grassroots exert their discontent and demand change. The central issue of social movements, therefore, is the struggle between the movement and the powerholders to win the hearts …

Sex Role Socialization In Picture Books: An Update, J. Allen Williams Jr., Joetta Vernon, Martha C. Williams, Karen Malecha

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

In a content analysis of children’s picture books, Weitzman et al, (1972) found females depicted far less often than males, and those females who were included tended to play traditional, stereotypical roles. The present study updates this research. Findings indicate that, while the ratio of females to males is now closer to parity, storybook characters continue to walk the well-worn paths of tradition.
