Counting The New York Homeless: An Ethnographic Perspective, Kim Hopper Mar 1992

Counting The New York Homeless: An Ethnographic Perspective, Kim Hopper

New England Journal of Public Policy

Significant ambiguities inhere in the operational definitions of "site" and "selected components of the homeless population" used in the 1990 S-Night Count. Ethnographic methods offer a useful corrective. This article, covering research that was part of a larger project evaluating the S-Night count, describes a brief ethnographic inquiry into the ecology of public spaces occupied by the homeless poor in New York City. Problems in implementation, surprising ease of access, patterns of mobility and prevailing norms from site to site, and the tenuous character of the street sites are reviewed, as are implications for future enumeration efforts.

Social Practice's Mid-Life Crisis, Phillip D. Robinette Jan 1992

Social Practice's Mid-Life Crisis, Phillip D. Robinette

Clinical Sociology Review

Variables borrowed from the literature analyzing the middle years of American adults are used to pose questions and suggest answers regarding the mid-life organizational stage of development of sociological practice (applied and clinical) as a professional subspecialization within the discipline Comparisons are made. Issues are raised which require a response and a resolution if sociological practice is both to survive and surpass the potential pitfalls of its organizational mid-life crisis.

Books

Genocide is a modern term whereby groups of people are killed on the basis of their religion, race, ethnicity, or nationality. This book suggest that modernity and the tremendous social differentiation that is a part of our modern world may, in part, be to blame. The authors examine textbook 20th century horrors: from the massacre of the Armenians, to the planned famine in the Ukraine, to the Holocaust, and links of modern warfare to genocide. By studying cases of genocide, the authors hope to inform and connect to all other efforts to understand and to prevent the mass destruction …

Ethical Ideology, Animal Rights Activism, And Attitudes Toward The Treatment Of Animals, Shelley L. Galvin, Harold A. Herzog Jan 1992

Ethical Ideology, Animal Rights Activism, And Attitudes Toward The Treatment Of Animals, Shelley L. Galvin, Harold A. Herzog

Attitudes Towards Animals Collection

In two studies, we used the Ethics Position Questionnaire (EPQ) to investigate the relationship between individual differences in moral philosophy, involvement in the animal rights movement, and attitudes toward the treatment of animals. In the first, 600 animal rights activists attending a national demonstration and 266 nonactivist college students were given the EPQ. Analysis of the returns from 157 activists and 198 students indicated that the activists were more likely than the students to hold an "absolutist" moral orientation (high idealism, low relativism). In the second study, 169 students were given the EPQ with a scale designed to measure attitudes …

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

This classic volume on the image of the Indian in the American mind first appeared in 1953. Although both limited and incomplete, Pearce's work compelled a virtual revolution in literary and historical approaches to analysis of public view concerning the role of Indians in the American past.

[Review Of] Herman J. Viola And Carolyn Margolis, Eds. Seeds Of Change: A Quincentennial Commemoration, Cortland P. Auser

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

n this year of the quincentennial, Seeds of Change should be read by scholars, teachers, and students across the curricula and by those interested in multicultural interdisciplinary subjects of prime importance. The editors have done an outstanding job of bringing together essays by experts on the subjects related to "the massive changes since the contact of the Old and New World." One of the effects that a couple of the authors touch on and examine -- the gastronomic revolution -- was observed by German Aremiegas's America in Europe in 1975.

An Art-Historical Paradigm For Investigating Native American Pictographs Of The Lower Pecos Region, Texas, John Antoine Labadie

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

In the shadows of deep canyons in Southwest Texas and Northern Mexico, where the Pecos, Devils, and Rio Grande flow, are thousands of paintings on the walls of hundreds of rockshelters and overhangs. Archaeologists term such works "pictographic rock art." These particular pictographs were created over many centuries by Native American groups known collectively today as the Lower Pecos Region cultures.

[Review Of] Margot Edmonds And Ella E. Clark. Voices Of The Winds: Native American Legends, Cortland P. Auser

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

This anthology of Native American legends is a fine supplement to the Erdoes and Ortiz work, American Indian Myths and Legends. Whereas that work was structured around themes such as "Tales of Human Creation," "Tales of World Creation," etc., this work (while including very often the same themes) is organized regionally with tales from the Northwest, Southwest, Great Plains, Central Region, Southeast and Northeast.

[Review Of] Charles A. Eastman. Old Indian Days, Hartwig Isernhagen Jan 1992

[Review Of] Charles A. Eastman. Old Indian Days, Hartwig Isernhagen

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

This book -- a major literary work by one of the more widely read early Native American authors, and an ethnographic "source" of some interest -- is now again available thanks to the University of Nebraska Press's efforts to reprint Native American classics. It comes with a very useful introduction by A. LaVonne Brown Ruoff, which establishes both historical and aesthetic contexts for Ohiyesa's stories. Ruoff provides information on the family backgrounds, the education, and the lives of both Mr. and Mrs. Eastman, gives an independent (and corrective) sketch of the 1862 Sioux uprising that forms the historical background of …

[Review Of] Elsie Clews Parsons. American Indian Life, Laurie Lisa Jan 1992

[Review Of] Elsie Clews Parsons. American Indian Life, Laurie Lisa

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

In Joan Mark's introduction to the Bison edition of this classic work, she offers a good analysis of the impact of these twenty-seven fictional stories written by anthropologists and first published in 1922. Anthropology's radical change in methodology at the turn of the century -- of which Parsons and Franz Boas (twenty of these stories can be identified with Boasian anthropology) were noticeable figures in the transformation -- led Parsons to attempt to tackle the problem of the relation of the individual to the culture. Consequently, she asked her fellow anthropologists to write fictions about Native Americans in which they …

[Review Of] Kathleen Mullen Sands, Cd. Circle Of Motion: Arizona Anthology Of Contemporary American Indian Literature, Kristin Herzog

[Review Of] Jack Weatherford. Native Roots: How The Indians Enriched America, David M. Gradwohl Jan 1992

[Review Of] Jack Weatherford. Native Roots: How The Indians Enriched America, David M. Gradwohl

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

This volume and Weatherford's penultimate book (Indian Givers: How the Indians of the Americas Transformed the World, New York: Fawcett Columbine, 1988) discuss in detail the contributions of Native American populations to the Old World and to the culture of the invaders who ultimately conquered the New World. Both books are timely in terms of the current hoopla concerning the quincentennial of Christopher Columbus's arrival on Caribbean shores. They both put the lie to the idea that acculturation is a one-way street. Native Roots additionally indicates the tenacity of many American Indian traditions in surviving centuries of attempts at forced …

[Review Of] Vernon J. Williams. From A Caste To A Minority: Changing Attitudes Of American Sociologists Towards Afro-Americans, Cary D. Wintz Jan 1992

[Review Of] Vernon J. Williams. From A Caste To A Minority: Changing Attitudes Of American Sociologists Towards Afro-Americans, Cary D. Wintz

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Attitudes towards specific racial minorities have been central to the history of the United States. These attitudes have influenced the development of social and cultural institutions, they have determined the structure of our communities, and they have affected our laws and our politics. Given the centrality of race in American culture, it is surprising that until the second half of the twentieth century there was little effort to examine systematically the role of race in US history, or to examine changing attitudes towards race; and the efforts that were made rarely made it into the mainstream of American historiography.

Directory Of Surveys In Developing Countries: Data On Families And Households, 1975–92, Cynthia B. Lloyd, Catherine M. Marquette Jan 1992

Directory Of Surveys In Developing Countries: Data On Families And Households, 1975–92, Cynthia B. Lloyd, Catherine M. Marquette

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

This directory of surveys contains data on families and households in developing countries. The emphasis is on intergenerational linkages as well as conjugal ties and co-residential arrangements. Surveys that do not situate individuals within a family or household context are excluded. Thus, many labor force surveys with data on the employment status and earnings of men and women are not included unless they also collected data on respondents’ children and/or households. The same is true of contraceptive prevalence surveys that limit their attention to women’s reproductive behavior. The majority of surveys included in the directory are either household-based or woman-based. …

Family Planning And Child Survival Programs As Assessed In 1991, John A. Ross, W. Parker Mauldin, Steven R. Green, E. Romana Cooke

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

This volume continues a tradition initiated at the Population Council nearly 25 years ago when the first edition of “Population and Family Planning Programs” was issued. That factbook began a series of 12 editions produced through 1993. The data in that series were consolidated and updated in another publication, and the present volume is now issued, based partly upon a 1989 questionnaire inquiry to over 100 developing countries. A range of maternal and child survival data were added to the family planning information. The relationships among fertility behavior, infant and child mortality, and maternal health are closely interwoven; moreover, many …
