Service-Learning As An Integrated Experience In K-5 Education: An Introduction To Resources And Information., Lisa J. Laplante, Carol Kinsley Jan 1994

Service-Learning As An Integrated Experience In K-5 Education: An Introduction To Resources And Information., Lisa J. Laplante, Carol Kinsley

School K-12

Some educators contend that students who engage in activities related to school subjects learn more efficiently and more effectively, and remember what they have learned much longer than students who do not. Service-Learning (S-L) can provide a central focus around which educational change can occur. Moreover, S-L enhances the ideas promoted by various circles of school reform. Theodore Sizer's nine principles and David Berliner's management of teaching are a few of the philosophies that provide the sound theoretic foundation for instituting S-L programs. Kate McPherson(1989) suggests S-L facilitates school reform while providing an expanded pedagogy to meet the learning styles …

Predicting The Past, Recounting The Future: Human Ecology And A Prehistory Of Consciousness, Paul Faulstich Jan 1994

Predicting The Past, Recounting The Future: Human Ecology And A Prehistory Of Consciousness, Paul Faulstich

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

This paper is concerned with the organic derivation and primary meaning of Pleistocene finger flutings; I propose that in order to gain insight into the significance of the flutings, we must attempt an understanding of the physical and mental contexts in which they emerged. I suggest that finger flutings provided a cultural record in the Pleistocene which documented thought and action, and made it ready for reflection. Through the process of finger fluting, the human 'self' was objected and reality was modified in the experience of self-consciuosness. I argue that finger flutings, like language, were employed to discover and convey …

Grasslands - The Forgotten Resource : The Cultural Ecology Of The Central California Grasslands, Joanna M. Blume Jan 1994

Grasslands - The Forgotten Resource : The Cultural Ecology Of The Central California Grasslands, Joanna M. Blume

Research Manuscript Series

A significant part of the ecological makeup of Central California is composed of grasslands. The vegetation that grew within this environment provided important food and material resources for the Native Americans of the area, particularly the Ohlone and the Yokuts. Grasslands, although a secondary resource, were an extremely important food source both directly and indirectly. The Native Americans possessed an intimate knowledge of nature, living in harmony with the earth and learning a great deal regarding the behavior of animals, and the properties, characteristics, and uses of plants. Applying this knowledge, they modified these resources to enhance their productivity.·

Early Marriage And Reproduction In Two Egyptian Villages, Laila El Hamamsy Jan 1994

Early Marriage And Reproduction In Two Egyptian Villages, Laila El Hamamsy

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

As noted in this monograph, marriage forms a central element of social life for Egyptians. Marriage in Egypt is nearly universal, and parents invest heavily to establish their children in married life. Once married, couples are faced with social pressures to begin childbearing immediately, a reflection of the high value placed on parenthood and children. But not all marriages begin with the same prospects for stability and satisfaction. This study draws attention to the problems faced by women who marry at very early ages in parts of rural Egypt. Despite a legal minimum age of 16, significant numbers of young …

More On Modes Of Production: A Synthesis Of Some Debates Contextualized For The Philippines, Kathleen Nadeau Jan 1994

More On Modes Of Production: A Synthesis Of Some Debates Contextualized For The Philippines, Kathleen Nadeau

Anthropology Faculty Publications

A look into modes of production is one of many possible entry points for the study of society and economy. It was not well developed by Marx who only alluded to it here and there in his works. He introduced the idea in Capital. (1977, Vols. 1, 1974 II, and III), A Contribution to a Critique of Political Economy (1970), and in Pre- Capitalist Economic Formations (1964). While one can read this concept in his other texts, for example in German Ideology (1970), it is from the previously mentioned ones that others, most notably Althusser and Balibar in their Reading …

Vilifying The Enemy: The Christian Right And The Novels Of Frank Peretti, Jay R. Howard Jan 1994

Vilifying The Enemy: The Christian Right And The Novels Of Frank Peretti, Jay R. Howard

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Peretti's novels provide a clear statement of the worldview of conservative Christians who hold the Bible to be literally true and without error. Not only is the reader presented with doctrinal positions, but the implications of those positions for life in modern society are spelled out as well. In this essay, I analyze Peretti's views of the modern world, its heroes and villains, and argue they are representative of the views of the New Christian Right (Liebman and Wuthnow) in the late 1980s and the 1990s.

Other benefits of community service work are also discussed in the paper.

Partnership For Prevention: A Report Of A Meeting Between Women's Health Advocates, Program Planners, And Scientists, Population Council

Reproductive Health

In May 1994, the Population Council, in conjunction with the Pacific Institute for Women's Health and the International Women's Health Coalition, hosted a meeting for women's health advocates from around the world to discuss the development of microbicides. This process was the first step in building greater understanding and mutual respect among women's health advocates and Population Council staff and scientists with regard to the technology of microbicides. Participants hoped that the recommendations resulting from this initiative would have a positive influence not only on the development of microbicides, but on all reproductive health technologies. This report aims to reproduce …

A Study Of Children's Drawing Types And Factors Influencing Choice Of Subject Matter, Stella Clark Jan 1994

A Study Of Children's Drawing Types And Factors Influencing Choice Of Subject Matter, Stella Clark

Theses : Honours

The main purpose of this study was to determine what children draw when given a free choice of subject in the context of the classroom. The social Influences believed to affect children's drawings were also investigated. Another research interest related to Whether or not gender was a significant factor in the production of different drawing types. The significance of this study is connected with the desirability for teachers to have an understanding of children's perceptions of the world and the factors which influence them, as it is accepted that awareness of children's interests and influences may lead to more relevant …

Carl Hansen's Concept Of Christmas, David Iversen Jan 1994

Carl Hansen's Concept Of Christmas, David Iversen

The Bridge

As one of the major Danish-American immigrant writers

of the early 20th century, Carl Hansen wrote short stories,

sketches, and one novel, co-founded (with Oscar W. Lund)

The Christmas journal Julegranen, and published Dansk Jul i

Amerika in 1909. This paper will focus on three stories,

published in Landmrend: Fortrellinger by Dansk Boghandel

in Cedar Falls, Iowa in 1908, which have Christmas as a

theme. The three stories are: For 30 aar siden (30 Years

Ago"), Bowlegged Joe ("Bowlegged Joe"), and Gamle Hans

Nielsen's sidste Jul ("Old Hans Nielsen's Last Christmas").

What follows is a brief look at "Carl Hansen's …

My Parents' Lives, Hazel R. Morse Jan 1994

My Parents' Lives, Hazel R. Morse

The Bridge

Scandinavians settled with those of their own kind and

language, being drawn by relatives and friends who had

gone before them, but also through newspapers circulated

among them. Den Danske Pioneer was widely read among

Danes and may well have been the source of information

about the settling of northeastern Montana. Mr. E. F.

Madsen, an immigrant and intellectual who had made a

scouting trip to that area about 1905 urged other Danes to

settle together and establish a Danish colony.

Using Saltland In Pakistan : An Australian Connection, Ed Barrett-Lennard, Riaz Qureshi Jan 1994

Using Saltland In Pakistan : An Australian Connection, Ed Barrett-Lennard, Riaz Qureshi

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Pakistan and Australia have a common enemy in salt. In each country millions of hectares of previously productive land have been affected by salt (or have the potential to become saline) because of inappropriate agricultural development. Since 1989 the Western Australian Department of Agriculture has participated in a research project in Pakistan which involves revegetation of salt land using Australian shrubs. Early results are very promising.

Needs Assessment For The Learn And Serve America Program, L. Richard Bradley Jan 1994

Needs Assessment For The Learn And Serve America Program, L. Richard Bradley

Service Learning, General

In almost every community there are a wide range of agencies which seek to address what are commonly understand to be "the needs of the community." Activities range from caring for the environment to ongoing assistance to those with various disabilities to the more temporary needs for food, shelter, and housing for those whose lives may be in transition due to job loss or change or change in marital status. Yet in spite of the commitment of the dedicated people associated with these agencies, most agency directors and community leaders agree that the needs usually outstrip available resources.

Society And Self: A Symbolic Interactionist Framework For Sociological Practice, Janet Mancini Billson Jan 1994

Society And Self: A Symbolic Interactionist Framework For Sociological Practice, Janet Mancini Billson

Clinical Sociology Review

Interactionist concepts and explanations of human behavior prevalent among major psychological theory groups are traced in relationship to the symbolic interactionist principles of emergence, voluntarism, and process. I argue that most theory central to psychology is interactionist in nature; that central tenets of symbolic interactionism are woven throughout psychological theory; and that the same interactionist premises can equally form the foundation for clinical sociology as a form of sociological practice.

Neuropsychological Functioning Among Violent And Nonviolent Sex Offenders, Pamela Knox-Jones Jan 1994

Neuropsychological Functioning Among Violent And Nonviolent Sex Offenders, Pamela Knox-Jones

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Violent sex offenders, nonviolent sex offenders, violent non-sex offenders, and nonviolent non-sex offenders were compared on neuropsychological testing and on personality testing. A neuropsychological test battery and the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory - 2 (MMPI-2) were administered to 93 and 50 male felons respectively. Subjects were drawn from a data base provided by the state Department of Corrections. Potential indicators of neuropsychological impairment were controlled during the selection process. Analyses of Variance (alpha =.05) found that violent sex offenders scored significantly lower than the other three groups on two measures that are sensitive to left hemisphere impairment and one that …
