“Knowledge is power. Information is liberating….” Kofi Annan
Guided by this notion and the sociological frameworks of “critical theory” and “social justice,” we addressed specific situations in which access to, control of, and use of information is unequal, impeded, manipulated, and/or abused and thus can result in people’s disempowerment. We also explored efforts aimed at empowering those within these situations.
Adel Abdessemed: The Future Of Décor, Matthew Ryan Smith
Adel Abdessemed: The Future Of Décor, Matthew Ryan Smith
Matthew Ryan Smith, Ph.D.
Adel Abdessemed’s Future of Décor at OCAD’s Onsite Gallery is the artist’s first solo exhibition in Canada and is a testament to the university’s ‘Nomadic Residency’ programme, which has featured work and lectures from ORLAN, Rirkrit Tiravanija and Hal Foster. Some may find Abdessemed’s invitation by curator (and OCAD professor) Charles Reeve as a daring gesture considering the artist’s 2008 show in San Francisco was terminated after the artist received death threats over a video series that featured close-ups of six animals bludgeoned to death for food. That being said, Abdessemed moves in a different trajectory for Onsite. The work …

Beyond Tolerance: Consciously Using Universal Energy Laws, Discernment, And Harmonious Relationship Principles, Carroy U. Ferguson
Carroy U "Cuf" Ferguson, Ph.D.
Every day we, as human beings, maneuver through a myriad of circumstances in our individual and collective life spaces. Central to our experiences is the nature, kind, and quality of our relationships. When we encounter differences (racial, ethnic, cultural, religious, economic, sexual orientation, the mentally and physically challenged), a common issue that often emerges in our experiences is the extent to which we use tolerance in relating to other people and circumstances. For this reason, I want to discuss the nature of tolerance and its limitations, and how to move beyond tolerance by consciously using Universal Energy Laws, discernment, and …

Effects Of Greek Affiliation On African American Students' Engagement: Differences By College Racial Composition., Lori D. Patton, Brian K. Bridges, Lamont A. Flowers
Lori Patton Davis
This study used a nationally representative sample of African American college students to examine the degree to which their affiliation with a Greek-letter organization contributed to engagement in effective educational practices by analyzing National Survey of Student Engagement data at historically Black colleges and universities and predominantly White institutions. Overall, the findings indicated that Greek affiliation does enhance African American student engagement, particularly as it relates to interactions with faculty members and peers. Data also indicated that Greek affiliated members at historically Black colleges and universities appear to be more engaged than their counterparts at predominantly White institutions.

Perspectives On Identity, Disclosure And The Campus Environment Among African American Gay And Bisexual Men At One Historically Black College, Lori D. Patton
Lori Patton Davis
This qualitative study examined how 6 African American men at one historically Black college made meaning of their gay or bisexual identity, made decisions about to whom they disclosed this identity, and how their sexual identity experiences were mediated given the context of the campus environment. The findings suggest although this particular HBCU (historically Black college and university) provided the participants an overall supportive and uplifting environment, they experienced challenges with publicly expressing their sexual identities. Implications and recommendations for future research and practice are offered.

Marriage And Fertility Dynamics In India, Premchand Dommaraju
Marriage And Fertility Dynamics In India, Premchand Dommaraju
Premchand Dommaraju
It is widely acknowledged that age at marriage has a significant influence on fertility, particularly in countries where childbearing occurs within marriage. However, the complexities of this relationship are poorly understood, especially during fertility transitions. This paper investigates the complex relationship between marriage and fertility by examining marriage age, marital fertility and birth interval dynamics in India using data collected in nationally representative surveys in 1992-3 and 2005-6. Much of the decline in fertility during this period is due to changes in marital fertility, while changes in marriage age had a limited role. In the case of first birth interval, …
Dark Tourism: Towards A New Post-Disciplinary Research Agenda, Philip Stone Dr
Dark Tourism: Towards A New Post-Disciplinary Research Agenda, Philip Stone Dr
Dr Philip Stone
Abstract: Over the past decade or so, dark tourism research –that is, the social scientific study of tourism and tourists associated with sites of death, disaster or the seemingly macabre – has witnessed a burgeoning of the literature base. Much of this research has a profundity that can and, undoubtedly, will contribute to broader social theories and to our understanding of culturaldynamics. Arguably, however, some dark tourism research has been characterised by a banality that either illustrates deficient conceptual underpinning or provides for limited disciplinary synthesis. Thus, in order to assuage any structural deficiencies in dark tourism as a coherent …

Desafios Constitucionais, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha
Desafios Constitucionais, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

Concretizar A Constituição, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha
Concretizar A Constituição, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha
