Late Holocene Sea Temperatures Along The Cental California Coast, Terry L. Jones, Douglas J. Kennett
Late Holocene Sea Temperatures Along The Cental California Coast, Terry L. Jones, Douglas J. Kennett
Social Sciences
Mussel shells from central California coastal archaeological sites record changes in sea surface temperatures in the past 2000 years. Water temperatures, inferred from oxygen isotopes in the shells, were about 1°C cooler than present and stable between 2000 and 700 yr ago. Between about 700 and 500 yr ago, seasonal variation was greater than present, with extremes above and below historic levels. Water temperatures were 2-3°C cooler than today 500-300 yr ago. The interval of variable sea temperatures 700-500 yr ago partially coincided with an interval of drought throughout central California. A coincident disruption in human settlement along the coast …
Pisatin Demethylation By Fungal Pathogens And Nonpathogens Of Pea: Association With Pisatin Tolerance And Virulence, Leslie M. Delserone, K. Mccluskey, D. E. Matthews, H. D. Vanetten
Pisatin Demethylation By Fungal Pathogens And Nonpathogens Of Pea: Association With Pisatin Tolerance And Virulence, Leslie M. Delserone, K. Mccluskey, D. E. Matthews, H. D. Vanetten
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications
Previous studies have indicated that detoxification of their hosts’ phytoalexins is a tolerance mechanism for some true fungi, but not the fungus-like Oomycota, and may be involved in determining the virulence of a pathogen. In the present study, the associations between demethylation of the pea phytoalexin pisatin, tolerance to pisatin, and virulence on pea were examined for 50 fungal isolates which represent 17 species of pathogens and nonpathogens of pea. All isolates of Pythium coloratum and P. irregulare failed to metabolize and were sensitive to pisatin, consistent with previous observations that members of the Oomycota generally lack the ability …

The Death Of Edward Mcmurty, David J. Wishart
The Death Of Edward Mcmurty, David J. Wishart
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Edward McMurty would have been lost to history if it hadn't been for the way he died and for what it meant in frontier Nebraska. McMurty's bloated body was found on 20 June 1869 in a pond on an island in the Platte River, about five miles from the town of Columbus (Fig. 1). He had been missing for six weeks. His body had been tethered to a large log and weighted down in the water. But distant snowmelts in the Rocky Mountains and a torrential Nebraska downpour on June 19th swelled the Platte, which flowed onto the island, flooding …
Review Of Satanta: The Life And Death Of A War Chief. By Charles M. Robinson Iii, Benjamin R. Kracht
Review Of Satanta: The Life And Death Of A War Chief. By Charles M. Robinson Iii, Benjamin R. Kracht
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Set-t' ainte, or "White Bear," whose name was Anglicized into Satanta, was one of the most feared Southern Plains warriors and raiders in the mid-nineteenth century. Robinson's biography of Satanta also remembered as the "Orator of the Plains"-grew out of the author's research into the history of Fort Richardson and the May 1871 killing of seven teamsters outside the nearby town of Jacksboro, Texas. White Bear and Big Tree, the two Kiowa warriors held responsible for the teamsters' deaths, were the first American Indian leaders to be tried in a civil court (State of Texas v. Satanta and Big …
Review Of Autobiography Of Red Cloud: War Leader Of The Oglalas Edited By R. Eli Paul, H. David Brumble
Review Of Autobiography Of Red Cloud: War Leader Of The Oglalas Edited By R. Eli Paul, H. David Brumble
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
It is wonderful that as-told-to autobiographical narratives by pre-literate American Indians continue to appear. At one end of the editorial scale is Janet Wall Hendricks' edition of To Drink of Death: The Narrative of a Shuar Warrior (1993), where the editor/amanuensis has taken great care to present this warrior's life stories in something very like the way he told them. Autobiography of Red Cloud is close to the scale's other end. In the 1890s Red Cloud told his stories to an old friend named Sam Deon; unbeknownst to Red Cloud, Deon retailed these stories daily to the Pine Ridge postmaster …

Review Of The Nebraska Indian Wars Reader, 1865-1877 Edited By R. Eli Paul, James O. Gump
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Between 1854 and 1890, the military frontier in western Nebraska witnessed major events, including Harney's victory over the Sioux at Ash Hollow in 1855, the Republican River Expedition of 1869, the Battle of Massacre Canyon in 1873, skirmishes in the Great Sioux War of 1876-77, and the killing of Crazy Horse in 1877. These years also featured the activities of such famous Lakota leaders as Red Cloud, Spotted Tail, and Crazy Horse, the US Fifth Cavalry headquartered at Fort McPherson, as well as the "Dandy Fifth's" leading personalities, including General Eugene Carr, "Buffalo Bill" Cody (chief of scouts), and Major …
The New Frontier: The Presidential Election Campaign Of Jfk, Bryan Wuthrich
The New Frontier: The Presidential Election Campaign Of Jfk, Bryan Wuthrich
Masters Theses
This thesis is an examination of the Kennedy election campaign. It is a narrative and also a brief examination of how this campaign was put together and how the Kennedy campaign staff was formed. The main perspective that it takes is from the vantage point of the Cold War which serves as driving force behind the main issues of the campaign. It is the primary argument of this thesis that the Kennedy campaign marked a period of transition whereby America began to formulate a coherent ideological position for itself as leader of the free world and come into its own …

Beyond Narrow Liberalism, Justin B. Taylor '99
Beyond Narrow Liberalism, Justin B. Taylor '99
Honors Projects
Of growing debate among those concerned with American political culture and democratic theory is the modern conception ofliberal democratic theory. This work attempts to broaden our understanding ofdemocracy. I will argue that modern liberalism has narrowed our conception of individual liberty. This narrowed focus has produce a reliance on the use ofpublic regulation and interest group pressure as substitutes for civic engagement. In an attempt to move past a mere critique of narrow liberalism, this essay will develop a research design and an empirical test to measure our current political culture's support for a robust democracy and its future prospects …
The Structure And Procedures Of Hostage/Crisis Negotiation Units In United States Police Organizations, Robert Joseph Louden
The Structure And Procedures Of Hostage/Crisis Negotiation Units In United States Police Organizations, Robert Joseph Louden
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Hostage/Crisis negotiation was formally developed as a police function in the United States by the New York City Police Department in 1972–1973. The procedure has saved countless fives. There have also been many hostage/barricade situations which ended in disaster.
This study is an analysis of the hostage/crisis negotiation practices of 276 local, county and state police agencies in the U.S. which employ at least 100 sworn officers and utilize some standard system of negotiation for response to hostage and barricade situations. A four-page questionnaire developed specifically for the project provided data about policy matters, organizational configurations, and about the selection …

Promises Of The Patiarchy : A Study Of Leadership Within The Promise Keepers Movement, Daniel W. Beeman
Honors Theses
By looking at the roles that gender and faith play in an organization and their leadership, this paper will make a significant advance in leadership studies that is not overwhelmingly present. The field of leadership studies will be able to use this as a way to understand those two contexts in addition to being able to see one more way to look at the leadership of an entire movement.
Exploration Of Immigration, Industrialization & Ethnicity In Waterville, Maine, Amy E. Rowe
Exploration Of Immigration, Industrialization & Ethnicity In Waterville, Maine, Amy E. Rowe
Honors Theses
This paper traces how hegemonic forces create boundaries through the specific examples of the Lebanese and Franco-Americans in Waterville, Maine. These two immigrant groups entered into Waterville after an English-Scottish Protestant majority had already been established in the eighteenth and early nineteenth century. The Franco-American immigration from Quebec extended well over a century and the flow of people out of Canada can generally be studied into two distinct waves. People were constantly coming into Waterville from Quebec, and a small number would return to live in Canada after a time. It is also critical to understand that Franco-Americans were settling …

The Role Of Relative Cohort Size And Relative Income In The Demographic Transition, Diane J. Macunovich
The Role Of Relative Cohort Size And Relative Income In The Demographic Transition, Diane J. Macunovich
Center for Policy Research
This paper summarizes the results of other analyses by the author with regard to the importance of relative cohort size (RCS) in determining male relative income (the income of young adults relative to prime-age workers) and general patterns of economic growth, and in turn influencing fertility in the currently more-developed nations. It then goes on to demonstrate that these same effects appear to have been operating in all of the 100-odd nations which have experienced the fertility transition since 1950. Parameter estimates based on the experience of all 189 countries identified by the United Nations between 1950 and 1995 are …

In Harm's Way: The Continued Relevance Of The U.S. Navy's Forward Presence Mission In The Post-Cold War World, Christopher B. Earls
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
With the breakup of the Soviet Union, the United States Navy has seen the fleet shrink from nearly 600 ships in 1988 to 320 ships in 1999, with a planned reduction to 305 ships by 2004. While the fleet has been reduced by nearly 50 percent over the last decade, the deployment of U.S. naval forces has continued at near-Cold War levels. The result is a mismatch between the national security requirements that naval forces are called on to support, and the forces available to meet those requirements. Some have suggested that the traditional forward presence mission of the Navy-Marine …

A Survey Of Research On Sensor Technology For Landmine Detection, Claudio Bruschini, Bertrand Gros
A Survey Of Research On Sensor Technology For Landmine Detection, Claudio Bruschini, Bertrand Gros
The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction
According to official figures, more than 100 million landmines lie buried around the world. Although intended for warfare, these mines remain active after warfare ends. Each day these mines are triggered accidentally by civilian activities, ravaging the land and killing or maiming innocent people. To help stop this destruction of the environment and humanity, the scientific community must develop effective humanitarian demining. Mine detection is especially vital to humanitarian demining. The goal of military demining is to clear enough mines quickly to allow troops through a land area. Military demining usually requires mine destruction rates of 80%. The goal of …
A Comprehensive Mapping Of Conflict And Conflict Resolution: A Three Pillar Approach, Dennis J. D. Sandole
A Comprehensive Mapping Of Conflict And Conflict Resolution: A Three Pillar Approach, Dennis J. D. Sandole
Peace and Conflict Studies
Excerpt
As I contemplate the rise worldwide in intrastate (in contrast to interstate) conflicts (see, e.g., van Creveld, 1991 and K. Holsti, 1996), leading to Yugoslavian and Rwandan-type situations, I sense the need to do something about them. As Rousseau has said, "wars occur because there is nothing to prevent them" (cited in Waltz, 1959, p. 232). And quite frankly, there are few, if any, mechanisms worldwide relevant to staving off a future Yugoslavia, Rwanda, and the like (see Lund, 1996): witness the unfolding of the violent Albanian-Serbian conflict in Kosovo into a possible, wider Balkan war (see, e.g., …

Panther Stories: A Gendered Analysis Of The Autobiographies Of Former Black Panther Members, Monica Marie White
Panther Stories: A Gendered Analysis Of The Autobiographies Of Former Black Panther Members, Monica Marie White
Dissertations
Literature on the influences and contributions of women within the Black Panther Party has been scant. Much of the documentation is written by and is about males. This dissertation uses the autobiographies of former Black Panther members, both male and female, to explore their experiences while in the organization. Each author's political ideology and his/her perceptions of sexism and racism and distinctions in the writing style of men and women are considered. Seven single-authored autobiographies written by former Panther members were analyzed both individually and comparatively. There were similarities among all members of the group, such as their support of …
